I'm looking at buying a 2006 530i from a non-BMW dealer. The car has 45K miles, so it's still under factory warranty but, obviously, I can't get CPO from this dealer.

What's my best option for getting covered at least to 100K miles?

Since it is still under warranty you can just buy the extended warranty straight from BMW. Just go to your local dealer.

Cool. Even if I'm not the original owner?

Yes, actually you can buy one from ANY dealer.......so it pays to shop around.......AND I was quoted $4900 for my M5 but I told them I could get one for $4150 and they matched it....(which I actually was making up) so they ARE negociatable.

actually, I spoke to a dealer today and was told that if I'm not the original owner of the car, there is absolutely no way that the car's warranty may be extended. You can however, buy the extended service coverage, which I was quoted $1995 for and deemed it a little high, though within reason. But as long as you're not the original owner of the BMW, you will not get a factory warranty extension - only aftermarket, which I'm sort of afraid of... so aside from selling my car and getting a CPO, what is a boy to do???

most dealerships offer a "third party " warranty. being the second owner, like myself , you are not able to extend the orignal owner warranty. be sure to shop around. keep in mind to compare apples to apples as all warranties cover different things. i got a 36 month extension with 100k miles total for 4350. with 0 deductable.

Just make sure it covers ALL electronics and nav.....My dealer (Crevier BMW in Santa Ana, CA) sells a nice one and it's been around for 15+ years.....remember you can buy one from ANYONE in the nation...........

is it not appropriate to list the names of these warranty companies on this forum or something? I mean, it sounds like a republican convention here with all the vague statements flying around. Can we get specific names of warranty companies that people have and can say that they actually do (or do not, for that matter) pay out at the time when you call on them from own experiences - not just what the dealers tell us?

We've had decent success with Great Lakes Warranty on my wife's Volvo SUV. I just got one (can't remember the name for the life of me) on my new 04 545 addition to the family that is underwritten by AllState and covers electronics. It looked good to me. 30 mos coverage for around $2800.

30mos with electronics covered does not sound bad. Thanks MJDore! If you have a chance to drop the name of the company, I'd greatly appreciate it.

DINANA530i: am I correct in understanding that getting ANY kind of aftermarket warranty, as long as it is purchased from a BMW dealer is still preferrable to anything purchased outside the dealership? Why - any experiences any one cares to share?

The warranty is called "Total Protection Plan," but unfortunately it only gives the name of the company that services it: Prizm Administrative Solutions. My research tells me AllState underwrites it, though. There are several different package levels depending on how many miles the car has, etc.

Thanks! I've actually looked at this company before, so I know the name. I guess I will do some more research on them, but I do know that their prices are pretty reasonable, the only thing that's been holding me off (other than the fact that I do have a couple of thousand miles left on the original warranty) is not knowing whether they are actually reliable at covering everything and whether people have problems/issues with getting them to pay for repairs when it is necessary.

Dinan - you mentioned worth every penny....I recently picked up an 05 5 series - it was CPO; i had them extend the service plan tho not being to smart, I heard "extended warranty" and only found out when signing papers it does not cover electric and wheels. I was so annoyed there was 'another' sell on I refused it. To further get my goat, the financing guy talked about 'what if the nav system goes'.but my real prob is they were selling a package I think of electronics AND tires/rims protection. I recall them asking about 2700 for it. I have 2 yr left on factory, this would extend 2 more. Is your experience it is worth getting the electronics protection added? If so I might call and see if they can cut out the tires/rims and just cover the electronics.

530on - i just went through this with a dealer on a CPO. 1995 was the price as you said for the extended service. they were very reluctant to discount it; but fwiw since I really was not shopping to buy and they wanted to sell, the manager authorized him to deduct another 500 from the car price instead.

No offense, but it sounds like your dealer "took" you a little bit. II worked for a couple of dealerships before and I know to never get into any discussions with the "finance" manager. In general, a finance manager is a term that dealerships use to call their best salesman, who's sole purpose for being there is upselling normal customers. I can't tell you how many people I've seen walk out with a payment 100-150 bucks more than they originally agreed to... To avoid this, btw, you shop online and over the phone, making deal ONLY with either the general managers or the fleet managers of the dealership. Me personally, I dont even talk to salespeople anymore. Not that I wanna offend them, but I have to have money left over to put food on the table after the purchase and these guys are usually really hungry bc their base salaries are pretty much nothing, so they make the bulk of their money on upsells. Also, used cars generally carry bigger profit margins than new, so the 500 off that they gave you is at mosta drop in the ocean of money that you may or may not have overpaid... Hopefully, you did your research before you went there, so you ended up with a good deal. At any rate, thanks or the info - I do appreciate it, and I didn't mean any of the above to sound offensive, if it did at all.

I paid $1795 on my '04 530i that had 32,000 extending it to 36mo/100,000 covers everthing. Finance guy came down from $2195 as I started to walk out.

I have a 2003 E46 M3, second owner, only 17,000 miles, but the car is out of warranty. The dealership wants 3 grand for 4 years; does that sound reasonable? AA Auto Warranty (an independent broker) will offer the "same" product for $1850. Does that seem to good to be true or does the dealer mark it up that much? Any words of wisdom?

Thanks Derek
