You can do your own work if you want.

No way would I buy one with out the Sport Package. You'll probaly find that the 545i with Sport Package handles as good if not better then your older M3. Yet rides as smooth as can be. You can even find one with a SMG tranny in it if you look around (though its little different then the M cars SMG, less programs). Really the main issues with 545i are electrical which is usually solved by updated software (so those issues are pretty much under control now). Otherwise there really hasn't been a stand out issue mechincally with them. Run Flat tires are good for about 5k to 10k miles and then start really making some heavy tire noise. So if you find a car with them on expect down the road your going to get some tire noise. You'll be happy when you get new non run flat tires.

Extended warranties is all up to you. Some people like the security blanket, some would never be with out one, and others throw caution to the wind. Bottom line is if you can get one for around $1500 to $2000 I'd say go for it. As I'm sure you know it doesn't take much to go wrong in todays world to add up to $2000 in repairs.

Good luck in your search. Alot out there and its a buyers market. You may even find a CPO one in the price range your looking.
