View Full Version : Shadowline yay or nay
detroit635csi 03-28-2008, 12:49 AM Im planning on browsing the bay and other sources and picking up some spare trim pieces window moldings grill, possibly the polished part of the bumper and the headlight surrounds paint black to DIY shadowline my car but without ruining the original parts incase i change my mind... i really like the blacked out look alot...like alot alot...
not a big polished metal fan unless its on the lips of wheels :evil2
so what say you? i wouldnt do this anytime soon i dont think... just pick up parts here and there and slowly being the process..
or i might just get a quote from the body shop and get them to do it for me when they take out the 13431413 dents and paint me a new pin stripe, (single stripe, satin black) and im going to have them remove the moldings that run down the center of the side of the car...it looks alot cleaner with those gone imho...
anyhow.. thats my story.. and im stickin to it

e24mpwr 03-28-2008, 02:13 AM Personally, I'm not a fan of Shadowline on very many cars...red can look good - have seen Nogaro silver that was amazing...but the whole thing comes down to details.
Many I see just seem like something is missing...
wokke 03-28-2008, 05:53 AM I like shadow line (see my project :)) even down to the lips of the rims.
But I agree with e24mpwr, it depends upon the color of the car. I don't think that I'd fancy it on a white one for example.
But don't paint any trim because it's not going to last. Get them anodized in black. Not that expensive and super resistant against all odds of a car's life.
I'm going to have it done to the lips of my AC Schnitzer rims as well as to the trim of the front grill(s). Once finished I'll post some pictures.
Cheers
Wolf
DaHose 03-28-2008, 01:14 PM I wasn't sure if I liked the look, but my M was done that way by a previous owner. I have to say that in the end I do like it. If you are doing it with spares I say SURE! I also agree that you should have things either powdercoated or anodized.

If the image or link shows up, you can see what mine looks like.

nicobaires 03-28-2008, 02:25 PM do it, i love it, wil do it to my white 85 hopefully this summer
dm635 03-28-2008, 02:52 PM I do like the look. Would do it to my white one if I had all the pieces. I also think it fits the 88-89 body's better though. Leave the kidneys as is, covering them up, at least to me, seems to take something away.
XTimServoX 03-29-2008, 05:58 AM Leave the kidneys as is, covering them up, at least to me, seems to take something away.
hear hear! the kidneys are a sacred part of the Bimmer and should be readily noticable to all passers by...if you shadowlined any darker-colored car's kidneys, they'd all but dissappear...it's like those people who change the colors of their roundels...it just ain't right, i tells ya!
jeffcfp1 03-29-2008, 06:54 AM Andrew, I like the shadowline look as well. And dm makes a good point about the kidneys. My decision was to buy the extras on the bay for the rear taillights only. Haven't painted them, but getting a comment or two from a few naive people seeing the rear of my M driven into grarage "I see you got an old bmw" vs. usually being backed in showing off front "wow, nice car, is that really an M6?" got me thinking... All older cars seem to have chrome around the tails, newer cars do not. IMO, in black, looks better with black vs. chrome on the tails, and confirmed this with a sample of a bit of electrical tape over the chrome.
joecautela 03-29-2008, 08:16 AM Andrew, I'm kinda torn..looking at the photo of yours. For me on one hand it looks classy, nice shiny paint, excellant chrome work and beautiful wheels. I think it's a nice package just as it sits...then looking at the other photos...for me it's a different tone, sort of like more "tough guy" stance. Don't get me wrong here, It looks good too. I guess it's just what image you want ot project? But each in their own way look great. If I was to darken it I would want a second set of trim so I could restore it back at a later date if need be...

I agree with Joe and there is only one solution to the problem:
Get a 2nd 635 and have one in chrome and one in shadow line :)
Why make a difficult decision if there is a work around. :stickoutt
joecautela 03-29-2008, 09:40 AM In looking at it again I see whats bothering me. In Andrews car the interior is tan/beige and I'm having trouble seeing that with the All black look, as opposed to Wolfs that is all Black on Black. If I were to go that route I'd have to go all the way, Black on Black with some seriously dark window tint too. A real late night dark roadburner. Low to the ground, worked motor and super whisper quiet....then of course I really like that Nurburgring car that Wolf posted with the the big staggered wheels, loud in your face exhaust and that balls to the wall look....maybe 2 cars are necessary?hahaha
detroit635csi 03-29-2008, 09:58 AM the front bumper is oxidized and the rear is even worse... almost no shine to the rear anymore... most of the trim on the car is good that is why i wouldnt paint it persay i would buy spares... its something im going to think about doing. But like wolf said if i am going to do it im going to do it right either with powdercoating or andonizing..

So my M635 is the Nuerburgring car now? OK, accepted. :)
I used to call it the PORSCHE killer because PORSCHE from 1984 had no chance whatsoever against these M635.
It still is a lot of fun chasing other more modern cars on the Autobahn because most people have no clue what the heck this car is. You don't really see them on the road any more.
detroit635csi 03-29-2008, 06:55 PM yeah tell me about it i get looks from everyone... i even had one guy ask me when bmw came out with this new car! haha there are a 2 or 3 m6s running around where i live but i only know one of the guys and he isnt a member here... i think he runs around on roadfly occasionally though
evlgt85 03-29-2008, 07:02 PM I desperately want to do it to the M6. I'm also wanting to refinish the Style 5s and make the centers black, too. I'm very old-school 80s car insane, and I love black mesh wheels because of it.
Dark cars can pull it off, lighter colors, not so much.

Like these? :)

dm635 03-29-2008, 09:45 PM When I think of shadow line on a white 6, something like this beautiful example is what comes to mind.

Mind you, I am missing the euro bumpers which make a lot of difference. A lot of work would go into making it look right. Half a$$ job wont cut it. Whenever I feel that the 'ol 6 is not where I want it to be, all I have to do is go out for a good run and all is well.
evlgt85 03-29-2008, 10:38 PM Like these? :)
Yeah, I think this will be the year of the wheel refinishing. I've a pair of 3-piece Sterns and my Style 5s, and I think it's time they're enhanced to maximum awesomeness.

That is an example of where the details were done right and the car wasn't overdone.
dm635 03-30-2008, 07:44 AM Very true. If done badly, it then looks like a big pile of doo doo. It is about the details.
joecautela 03-30-2008, 08:20 AM yeah but whats with that fr spoiler? Looks like an american pc on a euro car? or is it an american car sporting a euro fr. bumper? somethings off there. Also, here in the metro area white has been THE choice of color for a couple yrs now and it's getting old. Now I'm not knocking anyone ride but if you're going to do white it's gotta be MINT. Glass has to be tinted and trim has to be perfect!, otherwise it's just another white car around here. Heres my original euro spoiler..
joecautela 03-30-2008, 09:25 AM take a close look at dm635's car. For me it has just the right amount of chrome to contrast the black trim and tires. It has enough contrast to even support a spoiler on the trunk lid. Personally I favor it over the M car.

That car is either an M635csi, or its a euro 635csi with the M-Tech front end. You have the standard spoiler on your euro, its a little softer around the edges than the standard US front end or the euro M-Tech front end.

joecautela 03-30-2008, 10:25 AM M Tech? Is that a special option for M cars or an aftermarket piece?

I just checked my M635CSi and it is an original Euro M635 spoiler.

M-tech is coming from M-Technik. The M-Technik GmbH is a division of the BMW AG in charge of developing (and in early years also production) of the M cars. A lot of M-Technik parts like spoilers, steering wheels were also available as factory options for the standard production models.
To my knowledge the E24-Ms were even hand built to a great extent in Munich while the production cars came from the Dingolfing factory about 120km away.
