View Full Version : Cam replacement help SE Wisconsin
eurrofreak 03-27-2008, 03:52 PM I am replacing my camshafts with schrick ones on my '95 M3. I am looking for help from someone with the experience in that and possibly correct timing chain tools. I have the car part figured out but for the chains I don't have any clue or tools. The car is in my garage right now, getting new suspension and some brake stuff, but if it needs to move somewhere it would be able to in a week or so. I am mechanically inclined, I just need guidance from someone who has done it before and has the correct tools.
murdoc158 03-27-2008, 07:14 PM Try PMing "hellrot325" I'm almost positive he has the tools you will need.
eurrofreak 03-27-2008, 09:14 PM I will do that.
///MeisterBrau 03-27-2008, 10:16 PM I've got the tools but you might want to look somewhere else for the expertise

eurrofreak 03-27-2008, 10:36 PM I will definitely keep you in mind, what did you do wrong?
MKEMotorwerks 03-27-2008, 11:49 PM Which tools exactly are you lookin to use? There really isnt a specialty tool for that engine to do timing chain, BMW calls for a few but there just to hold the engine at TDC (a wrench could do that). Once you get it torn apart its a little different. There is a small chain that links between the exhaust cam and intake cam, those you simply remove the bolts that bolt them to the cam itself, then remove the tentioner, then to remove the main timing chain there is just a nut you remove near the top on pass. side of the engine which is actually the chain tentioner. the chain should lift right off the cam then... then you go through installing new cams to tq spec and tq squence and such... Im not sure how much ill be down at our shop this next week but maybe do it down at our place?

What's going on w/ the Touring?
///MeisterBrau 03-28-2008, 01:27 PM What's going on w/ the Touring?
Gone; took a wash on it too but good riddance.
I had just swapped back the stock springs and it was fine for three days. Then one morning driving to work it I noticed the suspension making some noise. It wasn't real bad though but checked it out when I got home thinking maybe something came loose. Checked averything over and everything was still torqued to spec. The next day it was still making noise on my way to work but on the way home it sounded like all hell broke loose. Checked it over again and all was good. Sounded like a ball joint but didn't have any excessive play tugging on the wheel. The damn thing would clunk just coming out of the garage over the 1/2 inch transition from concrete to asphault. I could either put $$$ into it and get more for it trading it in or just take the hit. I had enough considering I had just swapped that RF strut guide two weeks prior and just took the financial hit to get rid of it.

I still have no clue what I did wrong. Went through the tightening sequence and when I was retorquing to the final spec I heard a snap and realized the two lobes on #5 were pointing in different directions. I think my mistake was getting out of bed that morning.

So did you sell it or trade it in? And what's your new ride.
Maybe we should have a new ride meet.

The main one that I thought I would need is fig.5 in the link. It's for the tensioner. How would I get the exhaust one off and on?
MKEMotorwerks 03-28-2008, 05:14 PM It can be done without that tool, but is said to better/easier with it.
eurrofreak 03-28-2008, 09:54 PM How do I get the other chain off that goes all the way to the crank?
MKEMotorwerks 03-29-2008, 12:27 PM When you remove the tensioner bolt it takes all the tension out of the chain, you can then just pull it right off the cam gear.
scobaru 04-01-2008, 02:23 AM we're doomed Anton just so you know.
