If you have an e30 unit laying around you can try it because the blower motor is real easily to change but I would not buy an e30 unit just to try. All you have to do in the e24 to take it out is open the hood, unscrew the 6 or so screws that hold the cover on, and unclip the blower motor. It takes maybe 5 min if that. wokke 03-24-2008, 03:19 PM the blower unit (motor with fans) is the same on E24, E28, E21 and E12. The motor itself is not available as a separate item and therefore not listed with an individual part#. Are you sure yours is shot? Quite often the bearings left and right are frozen and the motor can't turn any more. Check this first before going for a new/used unit. Wolf ericgoum 03-24-2008, 03:49 PM I have an old one out of a e21 and the bearing on one side is shot, is there such a thing as a replacement bearing? Whenever I go to the junkyard the blower motor from EVERY bmw is gone, and I don't feel like spending the crazy money it costs for a new one. Sorry to jump into the conversation like this but I have been wondering about this for a while. Thanks in advance, Eric wokke 03-24-2008, 03:57 PM they are pretty standard bearings but not available from BMW and since you guys in the US are still stuck with non metric :) I'm not sure how easy it is to get them over there. I had no serious problem to get mine replaced. But very often just a few drops of WD40 help. sixseries 03-24-2008, 05:27 PM the blower unit (motor with fans) is the same on E24, E28, E21 and E12. Wolf it actually works fine. both the A/C and heater motors only work on high tho. why is this? back to topic. it just squeals very loudly and is very annoying. i wouldn't buy a new one. costs way too much just to replace a sound. but its very annoying so i want it gone. all my friends find it very amusing as well jbd5015 03-24-2008, 06:05 PM you have a problem with the resister behind the fan speed knob. Im pretty sure you can get new ones from radio shack for them. i have the same problem with my fan, only works on HI. -Jeff wokke 03-24-2008, 07:10 PM you have a problem with the resister behind the fan speed knob. Im pretty sure you can get new ones from radio shack for them. i have the same problem with my fan, only works on HI. -Jeff it's actually not a resistor but a transistor. The fan spped knob has a transistor and both blower motors have a power transistor as well (2N3055). In most cases these transistors are blown and that's why the fan(s) work(s) only at highest speed because there is an override switch in the fan speed switch bypassing the electronics controlling the speed. I bet either here or on bigcoupe.com is a detailed description how to replace them. Very simple on the heater motor because it can be accessed from under the bonnet. The one for the AC fan requires removal of the center console. Check out this for how to replace the transistor: http://www.normgrills.net/bcg/Blower_Transistor.htm and this: http://www.normgrills.net/bcg/Heat_%26_AC_FAQ.html#anchor1090602 or this: http://www.wokke.de/BMW-E24-VARIOUS/E24_Blower_Control_Repair.pdf jbd5015 03-24-2008, 07:28 PM I knew i was messing something up. i thought capacitor, and then i thought flux capacitor...but transistor is correct, thanks man! -Jeff sixseries 03-25-2008, 02:49 AM alright thanks for that wokke. but i fixed the squeal...just a little WD-40 sprayed in the motor fixed it. wokke 03-25-2008, 04:51 AM alright thanks for that wokke. but i fixed the squeal...just a little WD-40 sprayed in the motor fixed it. sometimes a lube job gives you great results :) But unfortunately WD-40 can't fix transistors, so if you want more than the digital on-off function you need to dig into that as well. The last link (PDF document) describes very well how to fix the switch in the dash. |
