View Full Version : removing side exterior trim
rodger 03-23-2008, 03:23 PM Hey, I'm kinda new to this forum, just did some browsing in the past. Right now I'm trying to do a touch up paint job on my 85 635csi. However, I'm having some problems removing the side trim that surrounds the windows. If anyone could help me out, I would really appreciate it. Thanks!

Are we talking about the rain gutters or the lower trim with the rubber wipers?
The rain gutters take some finesse to remove. The anodized trim strips need to be pried out without destroying them, otherwise you are in for some pricey replacements. Start at the front and move your way back, carefully levering the strips out with a plastic trim tool. Underneath are some very small philips screws you have to remove. On the later >9/82 cars there are two extra screws and caps on the front fenders, which need to be removed. After that you simply pry the trim pieces off.

The side window wipers are simply slipped over the upper door or quarter panel edge, the door ones have at least one extra little screw holding them down, if I remember right its in the front and can be seen with the door all the way open. The rear one is just clipped on, a little bit of prying will get them up after you remove the shark gills. You have to partially remove the door seal to get to the screws for the gills.
Hope this helps,
Klaus

I dont mean to jack the thread, but, does anyone have any extra of the #3 pieces shown on the diagram they want to sell me? Otherwise, I can get in touch with one of our specialty vendors.
rodger 03-26-2008, 11:48 PM Thanks Klaus, that was a lot of help. 3 full days sanding and prepping my car and not quite half way done...exhausting

You can still get those caps at the dealer. Only a buck something a piece.

Thanks! I'll check there. Ellis was kind enough to point me to an ebay vendor, but, there was no more. At least that I could find. As usual, as soon as I hit ebay, I buy a lot of stuff I dont need but want.
I'll call them today and check.
alpinacsi 03-27-2008, 01:33 PM The used ones on ebay generally cost twice as much as the new ones from the dealer. And then they make even more money on the shipping.
