View Full Version : Dashboards NLA frpm BMW.....
Checked with the dealer last week. I wanted a replacement dashboard for my '85 M & they are no longer available from BMW. I guess I waited too long. I could have got one about 6 months ago but I procrastinated.........
Mine has about 8 cracks in it. I have heard of some outfits that will re-skin a dashboard (Not like a coverlay). Has anyone tried this type of repair?
Bluesman 03-23-2008, 11:30 AM Contacty other dealers out of your area. When I was looking for a spoiler My local stealership said the same thing. But I was advised to check because the parts department usually only works with one warehouse. Other areas other warehouses. Goodluck

Was NLA, no stock in Germany too. If he can find one for me, I'd be very interested.
joeyM 03-23-2008, 12:59 PM i had the same problem a few months back but was able to get a used one no cracks. i was planning to have mine restored but dashrestorations.com, got a quote for $950 and a 4 week turn around. i hope this helps
$950.00!! Wow.
A new one from BMW (when it was available a few months ago) was in the mid $800.00 range. (My cost from the dealer).

Layne 03-24-2008, 12:17 AM "Just Dashes" gets $1100 for the repair on a black one and $1200 for a colored one. What color are you looking for? Black is not so hard to find. I still need a brown one if anyone has any leads.

I still need a brown one if anyone has any leads.I have used justdashes.com for several 2002 dashes. They do excellent work, are pricy, and take a while. Upside is that the materials they use will not crack again in the future. New BMW dashes might still crack going forward. Biggest deal is being without the dash for a while.
alpinacsi 03-24-2008, 09:53 AM I have a good one that I am thinking about selling. I was keeping it as a spare but have decided that if I need one I will have mine redone. Pick up is prefered as I do not really want to ship it.

I'm very interested & can pick up from you. If you want the M calipers I can bring them with me.
Bert Poliakoff 04-05-2008, 12:14 AM I had mine redone last year by Pete at Dashboard restorations USA in Washington state. Cost was $650 plus shipping each way. Quality of the work ....as good, or better than original. Be prepared for delays in delivery. He told me 2 mos but it was more like 4 but, again, well worth it
Romney88635 04-05-2008, 12:03 PM Mine has just started to come apart. Very small cracks in the usual places.
Does anyone know if the process is slowed by filling the small ones, or is that purely cosmetic?
Layne 04-05-2008, 02:22 PM Filling the cracks won't do anything to stop their propagation and probably won't look very good. It's the heat and cold that do it, so never park in the sun, and thats about all you can do.

Thanks.. That's what I figured.
freedomgli 04-06-2008, 10:28 AM I thought BMW Mobile Tradition would provide anything we wanted for the right price? I'll probably try an outfit like Just Dashes (http://www.justdashes.com) but the purists may want to contact BMW directly.

My local BMW dealer is incompetent and was unable to get even the most basic maintenance parts for my car. It seems that all most BMW dealers can do nowadays is acquire iPod integration kits and all-weather floormats for late model vehicles. Foolishly, they have little interest in or knowledge about our old cars and BMW Mobile Tradition is rather weak in the USA. I know many people have had success with Maximillian Importing Co. Inc. I'm able to get many aftermarket maintenance parts through Steve Haygood but sometimes you've just got to have OEM.

If the part is in stock in the US or Germany, I can get it through my local dealer. I furnished the part number for my dash. I usually give them the part #'s I need. I own a repair shop & spend $5-15k a month with them. The dash is currently listed NLA, no backorders. If BMW has enough enquiries on this part number, they MAY produce more, but no guarantees.
Layne 04-06-2008, 11:24 PM I guess I'm lucky, my local dealer is fantastic. I get 90% of my parts there because its so much more convenient and I buy so much stuff they started giving me the body shop price (about 20% off). They tell me exactly how much the parts cost them, and if I want to make a reasonable offer, they'll sell it to me for even less than the usual discount. I usually just provide them with part #'s but if I can't find one they will look it up for me. They've even stayed after hours a few times to help me out.
BTW, Haygood's parts are OEM (at least the ones I got). They have all the same packaging and stickers as from the dealership.
Romney88635 04-07-2008, 03:27 PM If it's a worry just ask Haygood for OEM. If his isn't he'll say so, but sometimes aftermarket is as good or better. I haven't missed yet with his advice.
freedomgli 04-07-2008, 03:49 PM I understand. I guess my sentence would have more accurately conveyed my thought if instead I had said "sometimes you've just got to have OEM and if the dealer (or Haygood) can't supply it from existing inventory then BMW Mobile Tradition should step up to the plate and meet their obligation."
Haygood typically defaults to aftermarket parts (cheapest price) unless you specify OEM. Except for the time he sent me $30 Bosch rubber bushings for my alternator when I could have gotten hard urethane bushings from BMP for $10. I only found out later about the BMP parts. Normally Haygood does represent the best value, hence why so many people (myself included) trust him to know "what's best" for these old cars. Everybody makes mistakes and in the long run Haygood has served me well.

A new one from BMW (when it was available a few months ago) was in the mid $800.00 range. (My cost from the dealer).
Dealer's COST, 1 1/2 years ago when available was $750. Retail was $1375. Having the dash remolded for $650 isn't much different than getting a new one unless your dash itself is cracked or warped> Mine was cracked but was easily repaired

Dealer gives me cost +10% on parts I buy for my own Bimmers......
