View Full Version : Cal Speedway Rookie Report, thanks to BMS
CSLBILL 03-23-2008, 02:21 AM Afer completing my first two rookie races this week, I have to say it was a real eye opener compared to all the HPDE, Instructing and Time Trials that I've done, but now that I've taken the jump to CR, could not think of a faster track to do so either :eyecrazy.. I cant think of a better time I've had on the track. Special thanks to Chris at Bullet Motorsports who built me a safe, reliable, and great handling car right out of the box!! Did not realize how good the car was until today's race where I had a couple of O.S. moments, one coming off the oval at 130mph + needing to brake into a left hander to about 60mph, and the car getting sideways :eek:after a couple of quick hands (thanks to Dromo 1 carting) the car corrected and I was on my way..
BTW, swapped my RA1's with Nitto NT01 with 17 heat cycles and picked up almost 2.5 seconds!! Sidewalls was much stiffer and had the same breakaway as the RA1's, so the RA1 are not for HPDE's and ordering NT01's.
Special thanks to Jonathan for the loaning me the tires, and congrats to Jon also on his first race weekend..Gotta give props to the BMS crew for helping me through the weekend so I can focus on driving.
Thanks to: Saldano and Dais for great racing on Friday, Ralph for the margaritas, Josh for the beer, Mike Mills welcoming me to the program, VJ for his driving tips, Mickey Miller for pushing me to make the jump to CR..looking forward to Laguna!!

You're very welcome, and I'm glad you liked them. Not bad for some old rubber, eh?
I'm going to jump in on your thread and thank Chris and the guys at BMS, too. They built a safe, confidence-inspiring and, I dare say, pretty darn good-looking car. I thing the car itself is capable of being right up front... I just have to do something about that nut behind the wheel. :eyecrazy:)
doeboy 03-24-2008, 01:16 PM Congrats guys! I was there watching both days and frankly... had more fun there than watching this weekend's F1 race.... I couldn't stay awake! LOL :D

Good job HACK!! :buttrock
Stealthauto 03-24-2008, 02:56 PM Nice to see a e30M3 passing a e36!
CSLBILL 03-24-2008, 03:46 PM Yup, thats my car, thanks Dan!
Yeah, the finish was definately exciting as they leaders passed me in the esses right before the front straight, so I got a good view of the finished. Funny I saw them coming up me and they were probably thinking " i hope this rookie is watching his mirrors and gives us room"

LOL Bill, they weren't "probably" thinking that, they were definitely thinking that!
You did a good job this weekend, congrats! See you next time.
CSLBILL 03-24-2008, 03:56 PM LOL, the big X on the back definately made them pause..but I've know Mickey for a while, so hopefully he had faith in me not to "freak out" as he literally inches next to me during the pass, now Claudio was probably a bit more worried :) Good meeting you this weekend, your car looked great!
Murph 03-24-2008, 05:27 PM Nice meeting you guys this weekend! Saturday's race WAS a blast, though I spent most of it looking at Saldano's ass :confused. I see I'm going to have some work to do to catch up to the IP field.
The HACK 03-24-2008, 07:57 PM Anyone know Mickey? Could you please forward the link to him? I promised him I'd share the pics with him but didn't have time to stop by to get his contact info.
CSLBILL 03-24-2008, 10:42 PM Murph, I believe that was Friday you where looking at his ass..because I was too for a while!

Thanks!
uscbeemer328 03-26-2008, 01:40 AM So you're the car in Chris's shop that I would see all the time. Congrats on your new car and club racing start. Chris sure knows what he's doing, helped fix my car up too, but for street/track.
Does anyone have the video of Mickey Miller's pass over Claudio in the last lap? I couldn't see the spin out from the grandstands.
CSLBILL 03-26-2008, 11:57 AM Thanks, yeah Chris went through the whole car addressed all the weakpoints to make sure the car is safe and reliable. I know need to work on the driver and need just a bit more power :) as my car is a little lite on the pwr..which mean more $$$
Also need to fend off the wife on pushing me to sell the LTW since it's going to sit in the garage sits it's retired as a track toy since I need to spend more $$$ on the race car..but I am not this story is not new.
uscbeemer328 03-27-2008, 04:17 AM whoa, you're the first person i've met who has a real LTW. Those things sell for a pretty nice premium. You sure you want to sell that? by the way, just curious, did the LTW come with the cloth hurrican sport seats and not the vaders?
Yeah, I didn't hang out with Chris and the other bms guys much (Josh, Brett), I was hanging out with the bullet performance guys (mickey miller, travis weltzien) helping them crew a little bit, actually i just helped take tire pressures.
I'm sure I'll meet you at one of the next bmwcca events, I just do hpde with NASA, but try to go on the same weekends as the club races. name is Ryan.
