Does our car have one?

Nope.

That would require some sort of float device in the pan, similar to the engine oil pan, but we don't have it on the trans.

damn, that would be cool tho. That would explain why i had no results while searching.

Some cars have a dipstick. Some dipsticks tell you how much tranny fluid there is in the tranny, some just drive the car :D

i wish our car had a dipstick, but im going to take the hard shifting as its time to flush the tranny, replace the filter, and refill it.

Don't flush. Just let whatever wants to come out, come out, then fill it back up.

Too many horror stories about flushing.

thats what i meant, then drive around for a weak and re-do it, or should i just re-fill it?

Drain and refill, no flush. You could also unplug the trans computer for 15+ minutes.

ok well i plan on replacing my front suspension on saturday, and changing my oil, and tranny on sunday. What would unplugging the computer do? Also, when i change the oil, is there any way to reset the service light, or do i need the tool?:help Also when i came home yesterday and parked the car, the low oil level light came on, so i went to kragen and picked up a quart of 5 30 synthetic blend, and then i got home, and checked the oil with the dipstick, and it was about 4mm's over the top line. So i didnt put any in.

About the oil: Are you sure 5w30 is what the M60 takes in a hot climate? That sure sounds far too light. Are you sure you can read a dipstick correctly? No offense, but I misread a dipstick years ago. Very expensive mistake. It could also be a faulty sensor. You may as well drain the oil and refill with a known quantity so you can see if the error comes up.

The trans brain has been known to be very complex and finicky on these cars. Unplugging the trans computer won't hurt a thing and could help it. Just an idea.

Look on www.bmwe34.net on resetting the service light. I don't bother with mine...I change the oil in the fall and in the spring. That's it.

yea, i know how to read a dipstick, but this one is a little more complicated, as it doesnt say anything on it, it just has to notches. so yea. and wheres the trans computer at anyways?
