View Full Version : What to do about factory orange peel?

So my 2001 Z3 coupe has virtually all new paint as the unfortunate result of being hit twice in the last year while parked. The only original paint I have is on my roof and driver's side door. It bugs me that you can see the orange peel on the roof and door, while the re-painted areas of my car are nice and smooth :mad

- Is it possible for the newly painted surfaces to still develop Orange Peel? If so, how long should I wait. The right side was painted last year and the left side was just painted about a week ago.

- If the newly painted surfaces are going to stay smooth (ie, not develop OP) then I want to have the orange peel on the roof and door removed ASAP. Are there any other issues I need to address to make all the paint look consistent? Other than the orange peel, the old paint is in pretty good condition, just a few minor scratches.

- Any recommendations in the Los Angeles area for doing the work? Thanks

orange peel happens just after the paint is layed down. It doesnt develop over time.
the best time to flatten out the paint is within a couple of days after the paint has dried. Its easier to cut because its still fairly 'soft'. older cured paint is harder and takes more effort to flatten, but its still the same basic process. wetsand(soft-mediumblock if posssible), then buff out.

any good body shop(detailer) should be able to do this job.
