Why havent I seen any M3's with a hole cut in the front bumper to get air directly in the snorquel? Too ricey? No real gains at all? The owner of the car I'm prepping suggested it and I think its a good idea but I have not seen it done that I recall. Any pics of anyone that has done it?
Cheers,
Ricky

Where would you cut this hole?

I know every DTM carbon airbox and stock routing box port the air to the inside engine bay where the hole is already cut out and I would imagine with the stock bumpers enough air is circulated that it hasn't been redesigned.

......more air couldn't hurt but I don't see a place to directly cut a hole where it would even make a diff.

I am talking about a hole in the bumper cover as well as the bumper bar to direct air right into the snorkel that goes into the airbox. I have looked at a zillion E30M3 pics to try and find this mod but have not seen it. I understand why the snorkel is where it is (to draw cold hi-pressure air that forms behind the bumper). However, opening up a hole in the bumper would do this as well as further pressurizing the airbox, if ever so slightly. The leading edge of the bumper is a source of hi pressure. This is my theory and I could be totally off base as well. I just "swiss-cheesed" the front bumper bar to lighten it. Took it from 13lbs to 9lbs and the bumper cover is prime for a hole to do this mod. Just looking for confirmations or denials.

I don't think there is a need for it. The engine gets more than adequate cool air from the oem box so what are you trying to accomplish? Are you still using a flapper airbox? Going to a HFM would allow the engine to run smoother and better than the ancient flapperairbox.
Do a youtube search on S14 Carbon fiber airboxs and you can hear how well they work as the intake sound is louder than most exhausts.

Perhaps it's because it's unsightly and just too much work cutting thru the bumper carrier and cover. How much real world gain would you expect? Probably not much if anything with the AFM. Alpha N would benefit but then most people just get the entire Grp A/DTM airbox.

Well I had ceased and desisted on it by Sunday night. I had already cut up the bumper bar to lighten so the execution wasn't that difficult. What I did do was look at countless pictures looking for this mod and I figure there would be no real gains if no one had done it. I am trying something else more "reversible"
Thanks,
Ricky
