This is for the end of July, 3 day weekend.

Do you know anyone working at a hotel in the area? Any tips or suggestions?

Oh and obviously the gf isn't going to be keen on staying in a dive.

I am looking for a place downtown, in these 2 areas:

Ideally, I would be between the two (close to the water). This means easy walking distance to most of the stuff I want to see. If it ends up being too far North or South, there is a concern regarding the cost of cab fare. I would like to avoid that. (We will be flying in and taking the shuttle downtown from the airport. No rental car.)

I tried Priceline. The best deal for a 3 star was $131/night, and the best deal for a 4 star was $143/night. I included both areas.

That's not bad I guess. I would have been happier with a 3 star for closer to $100/night. I'm not sure if I can get there or not. Perhaps I am looking too far in advance?

Again, I have no idea what amenities are included. If the 4 star or 3 star has wireless internet and free breakfast, that would make a difference. Location would also make a difference but you don't get that choice through Priceline.

Thanks for your help.

Look up the Essex. It's not the most glamourous or up to date. But it's the cheapest, cleanest and has the friendliest staff. It's right on Michigan Ave too.

I think on 4th of July weekend a few years ago I was paying $99 a night.

Hmm, that's weird about Priceline... you can almost always get a Hyatt or Sheraton for $80 if you search The Loop and put in 4-star... My girlfriend and I just stayed at the Hyatt Regency right on Michigan Ave for $60 when we went to the auto show. Give it another shot searching only the Loop and 4 star, or if you've tried too many times and have to put in another area check Midway as well (because there are now 4 stars out that way).

Good luck
