So coming home last night from MD, I pass a state cop in springfield giving a ticket to someone. Traffic is stop and go and as I am passing him we make eye contact. Kind of like the one where you know he's coming after you. Anyways minding my own business 4 miles down I take the Lorton Road Exit. Sure enough the state cop is right behind me. Make a right at the light and get into the far left lane. He pulls into the middle lane trying to get along side me. As soon as the lanes merged into one...the lights went on. So I pull over, turn off the car and roll down the window.

Mind you..I am in my 2002 M5 with tinted windows and Magnaflow mufflers. So he states " I wanted to read your window tint to see if it is legal or not. Can you roll your window up halfway?" I am thinking to myself this officer chased me down 5-6 miles just for this. So he goes onto state that the legal limit for the front windows is 50% and mine was at about 35%. So he says your good to go. I am thinking to myself this cop is more worried about my window tint then the speeders and reckless drivers on I-95.

PS: I actually thought he was pulling me over for my exhaust.

They like to harass fast cars. It's just the way it is. Even though you were going the speed limit they will still mess with you.

I know some great cops that do an outstanding job, but I have seen some that are just punks. Just depends on the actual person that is wearing the uniform.

Yup! This cop was not a punk or anything but to me it was like I think you would be more productive on I-95 busting people who are a real danger. :rolleyes

yea, meanwhile someone is probably getting carjacked a few miles up the road while he messes with you for a petty thing........that's lame

How many times you see some fool racing down the exit only lanes at 65mph past stopped traffic and then cut back in? Never a cop around for that. But get a loud muffler or some tint and watch em spill coffee racing out of Dunkin Doughnuts.

Why attempt to pursue people that may pose a danger and are harder to catch than a law-abiding, upper-middle-class citizen such as yourself with a nice car? It's the principle of the path of least resistance, and cops just as prone to it as anyone else--perhaps moreso.

This is not a M3 related thing but i also own a 2001 SVT Lightning with.. ALOT of mods, i mean like supercharger, full exhaust headers, catless mids, catback.. its loud as fuck.. i got pulled for my window tint and yes i did get a ticket for it b/c it turned out to be 10% even tho when i had it done i said i wanted 20% but anyway.. the cop went back to his car and wrote up my window tint ticket.. then went on to question me about my suspension, and exhaust.. he got down on his hands and knees and looked at my exhaust from headers back.. then went around to look at my Exhaust tips.. came back and said have a good day. i was like wow window tint ticket then he just wanted to look at all that shit and said nothing about it.

I dont have any plans for exhaust for the M3 exept the AA Track Pipe i have that im going to add to the stock exhaust.. dont know what it will sound like... hope it wont be to loud.

Probably just a redneck fascinated by fast pickup trucks.

Why did he go out of his way to chase you down and find you had illegal tint to just let you go?

Thats a good question. Wish I had an answer from you. I thought the cops in Fairfax are required to given you either a warning or a ticket when they pull you over?

You must remember that in a society that allows the free and fair carrying of guns and the not so free but definately carrying of guns cops are going to want to know that when they ride up to a vehicle some is not packing heat and popping them at the side of the road.

This may have been a "I want to check the car out" scenario but he would cage it as a legit "safety first" stop. They need to see you to know you're not a bad guy. The M5 is popular with drug dealers after all, especially one that is "pimpin".
