My 96 cluster has the black box on the back that is detatchable. The 01 cluster has that built in. The plugs are the same, blue plug and white plug.

When I plug in the US market cluster, I get a "Trans Failsafe Prog" error message, and the temp needle pegs at full hot. Also the tach will not work and the brake light stays on and is yellow. The SRS light also stays on.

I previously plugged in an earlier US market cluster that I was able to take my "black box" and put it on the back, but the speedo didn't work, and the temp needle was below cold and I received no trans failsafe errors, and no other dummy lights. I think the speedo and temp needles were just broken because it was obvious the cluster had been opened up previously.

Is there a way to reprogram the 01 cluster to work in my 96? I thought all e38, e39 and x5 clusters were interchangeable.

Help!!

You have to take it to the dealer and have it coded to match your car.

They are interchangeable, but require programming from the dealer

yes, code the cluster to the car and it will work
