View Full Version : Stretched Tire help, not a noob thread
bmw325e30 03-20-2008, 05:21 PM I'm having real trouble getting my tires mounted. They're 215/40/17 Fuzion ZRi's going on 17x8 wheels. The place I took them to is a good shop, but they are having problems getting the tire to seat on the rim. Every other place I took them to flat out refused to do it. From everything I've read and have been told on here, those sizes aren't that big a deal. Apparently on my wheels (OEM M-System wheels) there is a "safety bead" that prevents the tire from coming off the rim in the event of a blowout. They're having trouble getting the tire to pop onto it. They say they've been pressuring it up to 100 psi with no luck. What can I do?
Jeron 03-20-2008, 05:25 PM It looks like Fuzion spec that on 7-8.5" rims. I cant imagine it on an 8.5" but I would have thought it would fit on an 8.
If it doesn't fit it doesn't fit. Have they even got one to fit or do you just have a single bent rim?
bmw325e30 03-20-2008, 05:28 PM They have one pretty much fit except for a small dip below the bead.
KarlSpackler 03-20-2008, 06:07 PM Keep looking for a shop that tenders to the drifters/euros in your area. 215/40-17 is spec'd up to an 8.5" rim (that is what I am running on my car) and shouldn't be ANY trouble at all to bead up. I actually asked my shop after he mounted them if they were hard and he said it was a piece of cake.
+1, this should be cake. My shop just put a 225/35/18 on a 10" wheel.
Find a shop with a Cheetah!
bmw325e30 03-20-2008, 06:12 PM Well let me rephrase, they've seated the bead, but there is a small lip above the bead that the tire is hung up on. Apparently it's a safety precaution if the tire deflates at speed. The manager seemed to know what he was talking about, he knew what the M-Systems were and even knew that they came with covers.

SpasticDwarf 03-20-2008, 06:30 PM Like I told you, a 215/40 is spec'd up to 8.5". Hell, the local firestone did my 215/40's on 8.5's.
They had trouble getting my 205/40's to mount on my 8.5's, which is why I run the 215's. :(
Just keep looking for a reputable "tuner" shop.
bmw325e30 03-20-2008, 06:58 PM Unfortunately, I signed their waiver that covers their asses in case something is damaged. I guess I'll find out tomorrow if it was successful.
mryakan 03-20-2008, 08:03 PM ouch. This is making me a bit nervous. I am trying to order a set of 225/40 and 255/35 with 18x8.5 and 18x9.5 staggered CSL reps and this is one uncertainty, stretching. The specs for the tires have a high end only .5" greater than the respective rim width, so I am afraid the same will happen to me. To make things worse, I am mounting runflats which are harder to stretch. Please do update us what happens, I am very curious to see if I should venture with this setup. My rep is being helpful but is new at this and he is going back and forth to his boss and kinda confusing me. I am trying to piggy back off of others experience here, I hope no one minds (don't want to thread jack, I have another thread that people can reply to).
Hathaway 03-20-2008, 09:49 PM Get a bottle of soapy water and spray it on the wheel/bead and it will help the tire slide on easier.

Dude.. those tires are not stretched in the least.
mryakan 03-21-2008, 12:13 AM Thanks guys, that is reassuring. The guy came back to me and said they should work.He seems new at this stuff and was punting questions back and forth off colleagues or his boss. It was actually another vendor that told me they don't recommend fitting them, but maybe they are trying to sell me the packages they have, I had that suspicion.
Boostedcorrados 03-21-2008, 04:53 AM you can do it your self with brake clean, Either, Aqua net.... I like to use a ratchet strap in the center and pinch it down...spray a bit in the tire and around the bead and light it on fire!
That tire should go right on with no issues. My 215/40/17 on an 8.5 seated ar 20 psi and a push in the center with my hand....no stretch in my book.
bmw325e30 03-21-2008, 09:08 AM Yeah guys, I know this shouldn't be anything. I just can't explain why they're having such trouble. They should be calling me this morning with the results.
bmw325e30 03-21-2008, 10:06 AM This is such a headache. I have never taken any of my wheels or tires to a tire shop, this is the first time. I have always worked at places or had access to a tire machine. So much easier.
