don't let that stop you. everyone starts as a beginner. I've been to the strip two times now, and I already have the gist of it down. After one run, you'll be far more comfortable. Then it will be overcoming the nervousness and figuring out what you're doing wrong. I haven't quite figured that out with me yet. >.<

My first run down the track I completely bogged the launch - burned my clutch a little bit - and ran a measely 14.xx

But yeah, city driving is what you need. 500-1000 miles. Often times people will suggest 1000-1500 due to the fact, there will be alot of highway miles. I put on like 2000 miles quick like on my new clutch and it still wasn't broken in, but only like 200 was city driving, so my clutch took forever to break in. The high miles on it, was starting to worry me since it was still slipping, but all is fine now.

when i was on the interstate and depressed the go pedal while cruising about 80, past a certain point it'd just start slipping. Also sometimes if I was taking off, it would slip after 1st gear if i was getting on it.

Yea I haven't brought it past 3200rpms and I only brought it there once. I am starting out of 1st at 500rpms and shifting between 2-3 grand.

I plan on driving a fair amount of city driving between now and the 29th. I am going to try to put 50 miles a night on it if I can. I have already put 150 miles on from last night to today.

you can take it to higher rpms, just do it gradually. Don't just mash the throttle, that is when it'd really slip, is when i put "pressure" on it. In 5th gear, I had to accelerate very slowly or it would slip. It seemed the acceleration rate had to be slowed with every gear I climbed. For the most part I just would half throttle everywhere.

Hmm I have not had that problem in 5th gear. I was going 60mph to merge onto 95 from Quantico and there was a semi coming pretty quickly so I stayed in 5th and got on the gas about half way and it accelerated just fine.

Maybe you being gay had something to do with your clutch slipping? Wait what?

Hey it was great to meet you at the track. That was definitely a pleasant surprise.

Turned out that the issue with my M Coupe was that the clutch was shot. I just finished putting the new on in so now I am just in the break in period.

Next time you take your 328 to the track let us know so we can come see you run.

Last weekend, we met in Fredricksburg around 9am, then rolled out between 9:30-10am, and got to the track around 10:30. Got all registered and inspected, then ran from like 11-4:30 or so, then drove away, got some food and drove home.

I don't expect you to want to meet up with us at fredricksburg. I'd suggest having a MD group and a VA group (if you're into group drives..I know I am). We meet in our respective areas, then drive, adn plan to meet around the same time at the strip.

lol the inspection is more of a formality. You sign a paper with the proper waiver, and you drive over to them, they make sure your paperwork is filled out, they make sure your tires aren't flat, and put a sticker on your windshield, and mark your number with window chalk. :D

oh, just in case you didn't know, if you break into the 13s (you better) you'll need a helmet. If you don't have one, you can rent one for $15 at the track.

I'll need a helmet for sure, out of 20 runs or so w/ a weaker previous tune and no other mods all were in the 13's at least.

I am not actually sure, but the helmets they rent there are open faced helmets.

They are not strict about what kind of helmet you use, but they are strict about wearing them. If you go faster than 11.50 then you need a cage so I dont go all out unless I get a nice launch.

as said above, i don't think the actual helmet is a big deal (they don't inspect your helmets, they just want you wearing it), however if you break into the 13s, they'll call your number over the PA system/radio and also the ticket person will tell you to go to the booth. The booth will tell you to get a helmet before making another pass. They say every weekend there is 1 or 2 people who try to make another pass, after that, their day is done. They watch intently, and they won't let that person go again if they ran a 2nd time with no helmet.

Yeah we were having the same problem, I couldn't decide whether to shift into 4th or just keep going in 3rd. You think going early into 4th would help us? Worth a shot. Stupid question but what RPM were you shifting at?

7000-7200rpm.

I think shifting early in 4th will help, since that way you can at least keep momentum moving.

Yeah, I went to old dominion once back in 05 with a buddy. Fun little 1/8 track. The track prep wasn't spectacular that day I went though. Started getting real sloppy.

Last weekend, there was another 328 out there. He was running high 14s/low 15s. I can't remember if/what mods he had.

It also depends on how good of a driver you are. Launch and shifting are key to good times.

ran my 328is with the guys last time and ran a 15.2 twice. car is completely stock and manual. first time racing at the track so I guess its alright.

Why don't we meet at the shell gas station on Rt. 40, its right off Rt. 29. Just take Rt. 40 west and its on your left.

Leave at 8:30am.....gates and runs open at 10am.

It shouldn't take that much time to get to MIR from the B'more area. It's 80miles.

I was at cecil county dragway in december and it took less than an hour and a half. It's also about 80miles from me.

What time and where are people meeting up? I think I might come this weekend, girlfriend permitting lol. But you all have to promis not to drive to fast, I wont be able to keep up:(. One day i'll either have an E46 M or i'll just rebuild the engine I have and drop a big ass turbo. :alright

Any caravan you drive with will not be driving too fast or recklessly. It's hard to drive in a caravan fast and still making sure others behind can make traffic lights etc. This should be a responsible bunch.

One group will be meeting in Fredricksburg, VA at about 9am. Then driving up to MIR, it takes 30-45 minutes from the place we're meeting at.

The other group Sniz is forming, will be meeting at 8:30am. That is the MD group.

If you want to join the F-burg group, just take 95 south and take the exit 130b RT.3 towards culpeper. You should stay in the right lane once you get off of 95 and take the first right at the first light( this right takes you into Central Park ). You will see the wawa immediately on your left once you turn into Central Park. You will have to get over into the left lane quickly in order to get to the Wawa once you have made the initial right turn at the first light off of rt. 3


Just to let you know, on occassion we would goose our throttles, but for the most part, having a caravan of 11 cars, we had to drive responsibly to keep everyone together. Also I'm sure we pissed off people, because in an attempt to keep people together, I regulated the flow of traffic some (i.e. we were passing a van in the right lane, and I was the 4th person to pass, but realized a vehicle in the left, would close the gap and block the rest of the pack off, so I got to the left and braked, to create a gap for the rest of the caravan to make it through and I continued on at the rear of the pack). :D

i am in alexandria also. I didn't know the way to MIR, and wanted to be in a larger caravan so I met up with the guys in F-burg. It is only like 35 minutes from my place to the meeting point on Route 3. The overall drive will be a little longer by detouring through Fredricksburg, but not by much, since MIR is in the southern part of MD. so from Alexandria, you'll be going over into MD then south, where as with the other route, you'll go south, then over into MD.

I've been tracking the forecast from NOAA. It's supposed to be mostly sunny with 30% chance of showers. Hopefully the showers will come late in the day.

You can only spend about 2hrs walking around the tidal basin. You'd be bored to death if you hang around longer. The best shot of the cherry blossom is from a plane flying in or out of National airport. It looks great from the air.

"no time" is usually reserved for the very fast guys. They run the strip, and no times are displayed ont he board, then they pick up the ticket at the end. It is so others (presumably competition) can't see what their vehicle can do.

He has an SRT-4. he was reluctant to run with the stock wheels and it he has never been to a strip; until I told him about the white one that was out there last time (I feel bad and am totally blanking on his name, was it brad?..I want to say that is wrong, I dunno) and told him how good he did, especially it being his first trip to the strip.

You are a ways up there. I don't know the exact route the NoVA group is taking, but looking at hte map, it looks like they'd take 95 to 495 towards Baltimore. Then maybe Highway 5 straight into Mechanicsville. If you are able, you could take 95 to 495 and meet them somewhere at Highway 5 also. It looks like it would roughly be the route you woudl be taking anyways. However that is still a pretty long drive before you get a caravan. If you have one other person driving, then it would be totally worth it.

There should still be a F-burg group. That is being headed up by m3chaser (Jon). That group is those of us who went last time (or at least some) including Tom (GTO). Not sure how large it is, I haven't heard Jon say if all of the F-body's will be heading down again or not.

I will be running Mom's 93 740 because my 750 is still waiting for some major parts and the money for those parts. That 740 was my car until I got the 750 so I let Mom drive it but whenever something goes bad on the 750 I drive the 740 again.

Yes the 750 has a 5.0 liter V12 even as far back as 88. Which is great because the Fairfax cops don't know that so they think it is just a boat on wheels but it can out run them in an instant if I wanted to.:rolleyes

Alright, just to give an update on what I plan on doing.

Probably read a bunch of web comics (Least I Could Do is awesome!)
Browse bimmreforums.com and post whore alot
Read a book on nutrition I just got.
Go home.
Go to the gym.
Sit on my ass.
Wash my car.
Shower.
Sleep.
Wake up at 7am.
Shower, breakfast, get ready.
Out the door at 8am.
Drive to the WaWa on Route 3 off of Exit 130B in Fredricksburg, VA.
Meet up with Tom and the guy who drives a clown shoe, amazingly slow down the track.
Gas up, buy snacks, go pee, use the ATM, and chit chat until we head to MIR.
Pay my money, get inspected.
wait in line for far too long.
Drive 1320ft at an amazingly slow rate of speed.
Later rinse and repeat the last two steps. :D


Guys, also if it is going out be sunny out, you might want some sunblock. The other weekend it was very sunny, I got a light burn. Mainly just on my left arm, from sitting in the car alot. It won't be like a day at the beach, but if you know you burn easy, just a thought. :)

No josh can't make it out this time. Besides the vette is in the body shop and he is fighting back and forth with the insurance company as well.

I gave my car a quick wash, nothing special though, it doesn't look great, but better than the other weekend. However it made me realize my front rims are effed up. A silicon based tire shine i used two or three times, apparently ate the clear coat off of my rims (with the overspray). I noticed a weirdness to them, but even washed the car after it had happened, didn't think much of it. After all the salts on the road, it made light rust appear where the clear coat is gone. :(

I'll have to get new front rims in the future.

i won't take anything out again. But I want 14.5 and a 2.0 or 2.1 60'. That is my goals. Also to work on my shifting. Tom, the day after the strip, while driving i did realize i was shifting slow at he track. Well it is weird, the actual shift was quick, but i was so used to driving on the street, and making things smoother, I was doing the clutch, the shift, and the release of hte clutch all quick, but i was doing each move seperately and there was gaps. Hopefully I can remedy that this time. :)

I think another guy and I are just going to head out there at 9:30 from Springfield, VA. We both kinda have to get back and want to get some runs in before it gets crowded. I guess we'll see you guys down there.

The 740 is completely empty in the trunk (spare, jack, tools, my tools, rest of stuff that usually fills the trunk, etc) and I took as much stuff out of the front as possible so hopefully it is under two tons. See you guys there with my camera tomorrow.

I'm so friggin tired! I've been working on cars til now since after work. Just finished buttoning up an S4 after a timing belt job (real PITA). I couldnt get the pulley off the 55. Seems like the bolt has some corrosion keeping it in. Sprayed some PB blaster on it and will take another shot at it early in the am. Time to get some much needed sleep! :alright

Seems like there are some fast cars out this morning! I went to the gym and then got breakfast and back home. In those maybe 5-6 miles I saw 2 SRT8 chargers, 1 ferrari 360, Z06, another 335i convertible, SL55, and a heavily modded STI. Everyone is out enjoying the sunshine, hope you all are doing the same on the cruise down/up to MIR.

That was the Mcoupe. Very interesting that the other two Mcoupes with CAI (one was chipped) both were good for 2-3 mph even though my car was launching a bit better than them (judging by 60' times).

Just remembered...one other difference....both had taller tires...275/35 18's and 275/40 17's...I run 245/40 17.

Ran 11.8 @ 116.9 on the only pass I got in 4 hours! :mad Made me remember why I dont do test and tunes and like rentals so much more. Last time out I ran 11.48 @ 120.5 :confused I was runing on street tires so the ET is not too bad but something is up with the mph. Guess it needs time to adapt.

I dotn know what they usually charge. Since I've rented the track many times before they let me run both lanes (heads up if people want) for $3200 for up to 32 cars and $100/car after that. One lane is obviously cheaper. I havent doen one of those in a long time but I think its $1200 for up to 12 cars and $100/car after that. You might want to double check on that one

I ended up running a 13.618 at 99.94 mph with a 2.1 60ft. That was my best time. I just couldn't get the blasted launch down. Probably with a 1.9 60ft time I think the car could run a 13.4.

I'm down. I'm 23 and never dragged on the track with any of my previous cars, so I guess I want to give it a shot. Someone just has to teach me the fundementals of stagging / burnout box and we can all see a POS e46 can do!

You shouldn't really need to worry about the burn out box. Most of us with street tires, just avoid the water, and either pull up to the staging area, or just do a quick spin to clear the rocks off. I just drive around the water, and then up to stage. I don't bother with a burn out, and I've got 2.0-2.2 60's most of the time.

Think I mentioned Cecil in another thread. That is where I go....last time I arrived at 5:30 started racing at 5:50, and had 5 runs in by 7pm or so.

I would guess it's alot cheaper too. For my father and I to get in AND race the car it came to $25 total. $10 per adult and an extra $5 for me to run the car.
