View Full Version : Early 6er (e12 based) suspension
Leroy888 03-20-2008, 04:14 AM G'day guys,
I have a 1980 633 and have been searching for lowered springs and shortened shocks and so far there doesn’t seem to be anything available for a e12 based 6 the only thing I have found is front and rear camber kits from KMAC.
I have noticed bilstein makes a shorter sports shock for the front but nothing for the rear (only HD shocks) also there doesn’t seem to be anything listed for the rear shock mounts.
What are you guys using ????
Cheers

I don't think there is still a lot available for the E12 based chassis.
Here are a few observations:
The maximum you can lower the E12 chassis is probably around 1.25", and even that presents some issues controlling camber and rear toe-in.
An original set of springs collapses around 0.75" during the first 100k miles, so the results of lowering springs are ultimately around 0.5" for suspension height compared with the used OEM springs. The shocks can probably handle a 2" drop without bottoming out.
In my particular case I had custom coil springs made to my specifications, achieving about a 0.75" drop due to clearance issues with my TSW wheels.
I didn't like the Bilstein swamp boat ride, so I had my brother source a red KONI kit from the factory in the Netherlands (it's now discontinued as far as I know). I added RD sway bars with solid links.
The K-Mac kit for the front works great, I don't feel it's necessary for a moderate job unless you need to compensate some geometry issue.
The rear K-Mac kit is pretty much useless due to very limited adjustment range, I prefer to slot the subframe mounts and install cam bolts like Dinan did in the 80's. An alternative would be to correct the subframe for alignment settings.

amibuggnu 03-20-2008, 11:02 AM G'day Leigh,
I know a bloke in Sydney with a '78 633 who has had significant issues in sourcing an appropriate suspension set-up for his car, but I think he's got it sussed now.
I don't think he posts here, but he's Aussie_6er on bigcoupe and Prodigy on ecca, I'm sure if you can post your question there he can tell you precisely what he's done to solve the problem and what to look out for, especially seeing as he's had to do it all from Australia too.
This is his bigcoupe thread, let me know if you can't access it yet.

Ol'6erGuy 03-20-2008, 11:38 AM Here are two manufacturers I found in an older thread: Suspension Techniques #60060 and Intrax #201025.
6erWEBB 03-20-2008, 01:59 PM i know for a fact that bavauto.com carries the sport(shortened) struts for the front and rear for our older sixers. im also still looking for springs, i was told too check with Korman-google it youll find it- im fairly sure i saw they had springs for them too.
bmwrep 03-20-2008, 05:03 PM Every day I come on this forum, I am amazed at how much some of you guys know about the sixer and how willing you are to share. Klaus, if you happen to read this, I attempted to send you an email or pm or something a few days ago asking for your ideas on improving the ac. I remember reading your project notes that getting back into that wasn't your favorite thing to do, but if you have a link to your old thread where you go into that, I would really appreciate it. Sorry to go off topic here, I'm just truly amazed at what you guys know and have done. Thanks,
Ray

Call Steve Haygood, he still lists the ST (Suspension Techniques) springs $239 and the Bilsteins and can probably set you up with mounts if they are available:
Front Bilstein Sport P36 229 $109
Rear Bilstein Sport B46 0819 $102

bmwrep 03-20-2008, 07:38 PM Thanks for the info George. I really do appreciate it! Thank goodness I didn't have to pass a knowledge/ability test to own my car. I don't think I ever would have qualified!
