View Full Version : power steering pump whining
cj08334 03-19-2008, 11:40 PM Hello all, this is my first post, and my first BMW. I bought a 1993 740il on a whim, because of a ridiculously great deal. I took it to a independent shop, and all they could find wrong with the car was a whining noise coming from the power steering pump. I knew of this before I took it too them, but wanted a second opinion. I know I am supposed to use CHF 11s Hydraulic fluid for the power steering, but didn't not find this out until I poured 12oz of STP power steering fluid in the car. Needless to say, the whining is still there, and the shop I took it too could not get the noise to stop, because they didn't know why it was doing it. The previous owner recently replaced the power steering pump and all the hoses. My question is, can this be a simple fix by putting the correct fluid in, or should it run on the stp?
shogun 03-20-2008, 12:12 AM Pentosin CHF 11s only should be used. NOT STP
Try to replace the filter.
It is located on the bottom of the oil carrier

The filter you can buy at Autohaus Arizona

cj08334 03-20-2008, 12:35 AM One other question, do I need the drain out the STP fluid first, before I add the CHF 11s?
cj08334 03-20-2008, 01:23 PM Ok, I drained the fluid, and replaced with Pentosin CHF 11s, and I'm still getting the whining noise. I checked for leaks and I don't see any. Now, it is signaling for an oil change. Any ideas?
cj08334 03-20-2008, 06:32 PM Ok i changed the oil and filter, and all the whining is gone, who would've thunk it? However I drove it around the block and the steering will was hard to turn while making a left.
shogun 03-20-2008, 07:02 PM Try to bleed the system once more.
I once heard from a German board a similar symptom that the steering wheel was hard to turn to one side like the lower steering was gone. Turned out that one of the engine supports was broken and the engine block twisted and in such a situation one power steering hose was blocked.
You could also flush the complete system

cj08334 03-21-2008, 10:56 PM I pulled the cap off the reservoir and turned the wheel to the way to the left and all the way to the right (to release air I assume), and THAT problem seems to be gone, but now on the way to autozone tonight to pick up some fuses, I noticed smoke coming from the tailpipe while sitting at the red light. I pulled over, but didn't see much water ( but it was dark outside.) I tapped the tailpipe with a white envelope I had in the car and a small amount of water appeared on the paper. I'm reading the forums, and it seems like OSV is the common culprit, but I'm not sure. Can all of the noises i've been hearing be related?
shogun 03-22-2008, 05:27 PM white smoke is normal on these cars, takes a long time till the moisture inside the exhaust has been eliminated. After you drive a long time it will be gone.
In winter time this questions comes often. As long as there is no coolant loss, all is fine.
Black smoke is different or blue smoke.
cj08334 03-22-2008, 08:41 PM Thanks Shogun, out of my panic and complete ignorance about this car, I took it to the shop this morning. They couldn't find anything wrong, and told me the engine was strong. They didn't charge me anything either. Today is my lucky day.
john1806 03-22-2008, 09:28 PM Yeah, my car has the same smoke.
