View Full Version : E34 M5 throwing star
wokke 03-18-2008, 04:16 PM I have a staggered set (8x17 and 9x17) of original BMW M5 throwing star rims which I'm planning to refurbish and run them on one of my 635s. I'm wondering if it is worth it at all and if so how to do it.
Fully original (i.e. wet paint)
Almost original (powder coat)
Have the lips also painted / powder coated or polished.
What's your guys opinion? I'm asking because I'm not really sure if I like them on the E24 and if I don't I want to sell the set.
Cheers
Wolf

screwbiedoo15 03-18-2008, 04:37 PM I think they look awesome on an E24. Search around the E34 forums and you can see some different combinations that people did with refinishing them
detroit635csi 03-18-2008, 05:15 PM you have a set of throwing stars????!?!?!?!?!?!?!??!?!
if you dont want them i can remove them from your custody...in the near future..
...but back to the question. I think they look great onthe6 and they are a relatively rare wheel as well. I think over on big coupe there are a couple people with the wheels on their cars if you want some info from them or to check out more possible images of the set up id look over there.
wokke 03-18-2008, 08:31 PM thanks for the hint with bigcoupe.com
Saves me the work of mounting tires and putting them on the car. A clear no for me - I don't like them on the E24. I guess I'll hunt for a set of ALPINA 17".
If someone is interested..... I already started the refurbishment, i.e. removed paint and some minor curb rash.
jbd5015 03-18-2008, 09:29 PM I think the throwing stars look the BEST on an 88-89 car with the world bumpers...and more so on a zinnerberot red car...
case and point, mikes car:

Also, for refurbishing. I would say that powdercoat is the only way to go. Durability is a big plus with that finish for sure.

screwbiedoo15 03-18-2008, 09:31 PM that m6 is soooooooooo hot with the throwing stars... ::drooling::
bmwpower 03-18-2008, 09:39 PM Are the covers metal?
Lavalamp 03-19-2008, 01:39 AM i'm not a fan of the throwing stars...anyone have a pic of m parallels on an e24?

red is indeed also one of my favourite colours for the E24.
Mine are diamond black (M635CSi and 635CSi) and dolphin grey metallic (635CSiA). But the wheels on the E24 in the background suit the car much better IMO. Matter of taste I guess. I even like BBS RS with gold centers :)
Am I weird ???
My personal preference for the refurbishment is clearly powder coating, but will it pay back if I sell them? I have no experience with selling these rims.
Cheers

screwbiedoo15 03-19-2008, 05:09 AM In the US, a set of staggered throwing stars with tires probably goes for around $1200-1400 if they're in really great condition.

thanks for giving me a guideline. I assume, w/o tires it is not more than US$1.000,- then. Taking the current US$ / Euro exchange rate into account it makes no sense to even think about a refurbishment then.

A lot of folks over on the E34 board run them. I've only seen a few E24's where I liked them a lot.

A set refinished to your standards could sell for $1200-$1400.
detroit635csi 03-19-2008, 01:00 PM so i want them... im thinking polished lip with a black center..hmm..i'll have to do some photoshop work to see what it looks like..
but i dont think i will have the money for them until the summer...i love throwing stars..just personal taste i guess..
if you still have them in a few months i would love to take them off your hands!
.....anyone want to buy my wheels in a couple months???
;)

I think they look great on the 6!
What's your opinion?
Should I put these wheels on my car?

I'd search over on the E34 forums - seems like I've seen blacks mocked up. Personally, I haven't been a fan of them other than in original form, original caps w/ polished lips and nogaro centers w/ polished lips (like in the pic I posted above). I'd think the nogaro would look great w/ your car... My $0.02.
wokke 03-24-2008, 03:15 PM Are the covers metal?
yes, they are.

PRJKTGRMN 03-25-2008, 11:13 AM i just bought a set of machined m pars for my E24
http://oewheels.net/oe-bmw-mmp-bfg-1nps.jpg
can't wait to fit them!!!! :D
ThiagoR 03-25-2008, 11:50 AM When you fit them, please take a lot of pictures from your car.
I want M parallels too!
6erWEBB 03-25-2008, 12:49 PM are they 17 inchers, ive looked and only find 18s
Lavalamp 03-25-2008, 01:14 PM the m pars look killer on 7s and 8s but it seems like they might be a lil too sporty for the 6...
PRJKTGRMN 03-25-2008, 11:09 PM i think they look good on the E24 -- they give the car an updated and modern look...but the style is simple enough to still flow well with the cars body lines.
overall a beautiful wheel IMO for the big BMWs, aggressive but also understated...the way euro cars should be :)

I finally gave myself a huge kick and started the refurbishment of my staggered 8"/9" throwing stars.
Fully repainted in black and silver (as original) with new BMW badges they will go for US$1.300,- plus shipping.
If anyone is interested please let me know.

wokke 06-29-2008, 01:06 PM Now as I have finished two rims I'm wondering if they might look better with polished lips.
What do you guys think? Is it "illegal" to polish throwing stars? :)
e24mpwr 06-29-2008, 05:15 PM Personally, I've really like the look of polished throwing stars...

Nogaro looks cool on the centers, too (on some cars, anyway)
wokke 06-29-2008, 06:06 PM I agree, looks much better than the original plain silver.
I'll have them polished.
