View Full Version : Motorsport Cam
m6driven 03-17-2008, 10:18 PM Good day all!
Does anyone happen to know the BMW part # for the Motorsport cam for an E24 M6? Any info would be much appreciated.

Actually, I misspoke - those are the existing part numbers for my car (the S38 engine) with 2 camshafts. I thought there was a Motorsport camshaft which was more aggressive than the ones in my car. Turns out after a bit more research that there isn't - there are Schrick cams which are more aggressive but none in the BMW catalog.
You mention that mine could be Euro-spec - as far as I'm aware the engines were exactly the same for Canada and U.S. (NA) - colours and options were different (such as the Alpine White so as to make the car stealthy in the snow :) ). If you have any more info on this I'd love to hear it.
M6csi 03-18-2008, 03:57 PM For a short while in either 1987 or 1988, through some sort of loophole, Bmw of Canada imported the full Euro spec 286 hp M6 into the country (Canada). Only a very small number of these highly prized cars were imported, this stopped when Bmw dealerships in the US complained mightedly to Germany. Thereafter, I believe all North American M6's were the same, meaning the 256 hp version. I would suggest you do a search on this forum for the Canadian M6. There were some very detailed discussion on this very same subject. Your Alpine white M6 was my tipoff to your possible status of a Full Euro spec car as the US M's were available only in red, black and royal blue.

You might want to check with Steve Haygood. www.stevehaygood.com/ If I remember correctly, he told me that one of the M5 cams that came after the E24, would fit and developed more HP. Be careful, as he advise that not just any M5 cam would work.

That's great - I'll look into it. Thanks.

I haven't found any info yet - but I'll keep looking. Do you know if the VIN # would have remained as the NA format or the Euro format? Because I do know that my VIN# (which starts with WBAEE is the NA VIN# scheme).

It would be easy to spot a Euro spec non cat engine as it would have the snake headers. If it is a Euro spec cat engine then it would be the S38 engine. The cams are not interchangeable between the M88 and S38 engines as the springs are a different diameter and the followers are also. The cam lobes would not work with the wrong spring/follower set up. That is why the S38 uses a different valve adjustment tool with a narrower groove to fit the wider springs.
Top photo = NA Headers
Bottom photo = Same car with Euro Headers

Ok, I'll check it out when I get to see it (it's in the shop) and let you know. Thanks.
Layne 03-18-2008, 04:39 PM The prefix WBAEE will not distinguish bewteen US and euro, it was used on all of both kinds. If you type the VIN into either realoem.com or any VIN decoder it should tell you though. And it could of course be a privatly imported euro car, I'm not sure how to determine the Canadian import vs. private import status.
But anyway, I would assume that all motorsport engines have motorsport cams. :stickoutt The US and euro ones are different though.

Yes, ok, realoem indicates it as a USA model (NA). Thanks guys - I was hopeful! :)
I'm still going to check my headers - actually I can also count the number of camshafts, there are 2 for the S38.
Of course they all have M-sport cams, but I was looking for something more aggressive such as the Schrick.
M6csi 03-19-2008, 08:46 PM Check with http://kormanfastbmw.com/m5m6eng.htm for their Schrick M camshafts. Korman is located in North Carolina, they are probably the premier M car tuner in America.
