View Full Version : Release bearing grease?

I got my freshly rebuilt 280 5 speed back from the rebuilder the other day and asked him where I could get some of that special grease for the clutch release bearing, he said just use wheel bearing grease sparingly.
Now I guess he would know what hes talking about but I've always thought
that there was dedicated kind of grease for that job, a very thick kind that couldn't be flung off as the transmission input shaft spins.
Any comments before I reassemble?
Thanks,
Chris

Manual just says high temp grease. That's just for putting a little on the casing inside and out where it rides on the input shaft and release fork. Are you trying to pack the bearing with grease like you would a wheel bearing?

I used white Lithium Grease on my ZF box for my E36 for the input shaft, release fork and throw out bearing's tabs and the sleeve it slides on.

just a thin amount is needed.. too much and yea, it'll fling all over the clutch disk and contaminate it... but you really have to glob it on to be that bad.

Thanks guys, just had another look at it and realized that input shaft is covered and the parts that I thought spun don't. Another dumb question solved by actually looking at.
Thanks,
Chris
