In a Z, unless I were disabled, I'd personally never get an automatic. But it depends on your traffic. If you're stop and go all day, the steptronic is probably the better choice. If the Z's just for fun and secondary roads and open highway, then manual all the way.

I have a steptronic and love it.

You know, it's funny. When I was in my 20s and 30s, I could not understand why anyone would want a sports car with an automatic. Back then there was no steptronic or SMG. More importantly, there were very, very few cell phones. These days, when I am driving I am often on the phone for work. It's just safer to drive my Z in full auto then.

When I'm driving for pleasure, I often shift for myself. So, for me, it's a trade off. I think the steptronic is the best of both worlds.

Just my $0.02...

I agree with Treepusher 100%. That said...while I had my 07 Z4MC (Manual) in the shop, they loaned me a 07 Z4 3.0si Coupe that was Steptronic. The stomp-and-go of the Steptronic was nice....but I very much missed my manual.

That said...my commute is pretty tame with minimal stop-and-go.

But...oye....do I ever miss the SMG I had in my '05 330. Wow....I loved that tranny. :)

Had both, and if you would give me an auto I would sell it and buy a manual. It's just not as fun.

I thought long and hard and ended up with the step in our 3.0i. We only use the car on weekends or road trips. I miss the stick but if you think about it at highway speeds it doesn't matter. I am not a boy racer. GH
