View Full Version : AutoXer, Track Day, Club Racer, Time Trialers Check In
joenationwide 03-16-2008, 10:49 AM Just wanted to see who in the MARB is going to be doing what? Also give people the chance to ask questions to the right people if they are looking to get involved.
What will you be doing?
AutoX
Track Day: HPDE, Instructing, Time Trial
Club Racing: BMWCCA, NASA, SCCA
Rally, RallyX
What car will you be running, what class, with what groups, and what events?
Mine:
Car: 95 BMW M3 OBDI S52, 3000#, full suspension
AutoX: SCCA Street Mod Class #50
AutoX with: WCDR SCCA, AI, NCC BMWCCA
Track Events: Time Trial TTC class, and Instructing
Track Events with: NASA mainly, REDLINE Time Attack, other groups that recognize NASA certs, maybe SCCA PDX (at VIR, Summit Point)
SCCA RallyX: Hopefully try some at Summit Point?!? (not with M3)
1996BMW328I 03-16-2008, 11:44 AM What will you be doing?
Primarily autox with a few track days.
What car will you be running, what class, with what groups, and what events?
I'll be running my '99 M Coupe. Just visit http://jonathanthayer.pbwiki.com. I don't want to bore you with all the details.
Classes ASP for SCCA, MSS for BMWCCA
NCCBMWCCA, WDCR-SCCA, Cumberland, CDC (Possibly?), BSR, SVTOA, and maybe REDLINE (So many people convincing me ...)
Once I get my schedule sorted, it will be posted on my website.
ChosenGSR 03-16-2008, 12:03 PM I'll be doing my usual ~4 HPDEs this year, not sure on the schedule just yet. I suppose the first one will be Jefferson @ Summit Point with BMWCCA.
I suxor so I'll be running anywhere from C to B group in all events :)
Car: see sig.
Hopefully suspension overhaul in may. Coilovers & some bushings.
SpeedTheory 03-16-2008, 01:35 PM Building a 1991 318is for STS, trying to take down the perpetual '88 Civic Si overdogs. Will be running with Dixie & Wiregrass SCCA regions down south, and running in Prepared Touring w/the NCCBMWCCA.
Maybe picking up a 6-cyl E30 to begin a SpecE30 build....I think I've had enough with the E36 chassis, and MORE than enough with OBDII.
Hopefully hitting Road Atlanta & Roebling a couple times, as well.
genxguy 03-16-2008, 01:40 PM Autox and DEs, if I can ever find a stock e36 that fits my criterias in this Spec 3x-busy season (supply and demand, grr...)
LaunchBackwards 03-16-2008, 02:04 PM Thinking about doing F1 this year. Kubica is actually my backup, since I'm lazy.

You'd have a tough time this year in F1 without traction control :devillook
LaunchBackwards 03-16-2008, 04:47 PM You'd have a tough time this year in F1 without traction control :devillook
I don't need TC, ABS, or power steering. Also the less downforce, the better imo.
Car54 03-16-2008, 06:04 PM I'm registered for
NJ BMW CCA April Summit Point Main
SVTOA May Shenandoah
NJ BMW CCA August Thunderbolt
Want to do:
NASA Hyperfest June 21-22
Tarheel VIR Full
Mazda VIR Grand East
BMW O-fest Watkins Glen Sept
Will be doing NCC Autox's (PSS) in my spare time
Rockin a '99 M coupe
LaunchBackwards 03-16-2008, 06:15 PM But foreal, I'll be doing every Shenandoah event this year, so I can beat Scott at Redline (unless they run it at Main this year, in which case I will cry).
mlytle 03-16-2008, 08:19 PM club racing - scca, bmwcca
full scca marrs series (www.wdcr-scca.org) and a few bmwcca race events.
93 325is built to scca ITR class spec...~2475lbs dry, gutted, caged, bimmerworld sourced, css powered and jrz/gc suspended.
ComBIRDable 03-16-2008, 11:21 PM Autox for me this year. Hope to get to 15 or so local events. I'm not fast enough for anything at the national level yet.
Scott
link16 03-17-2008, 09:33 AM I have no idea what I qualify for....
1992 M52 OBDI, stock suspension. and a chip...(for now) I would love to do autox or track days. I would love to compete for money but I am so new to professional competition...
ddavidv 03-17-2008, 10:20 AM Spec E30 build finished, will be autocrossed here in the Harrisburg area at most events. HPDE's as they come up and I can get to them. Toyed with renewing my hill climb license but I think the entry fees could be better spent elsewhere. WAS going to be racing W2W until my job was eliminated back in Dec. I start my new job next week, but time off will be very limited.
JGood325 03-17-2008, 10:35 AM Running all of EMRA's Time Trial events (Summit, Pocono, NJMP) in ST3, and all of Susquahanna SCCA's autocross events in DSP. I basically have a spece30 setup minus the full cage. Maybe w2w in 2009.
Bunch of drivers schools (Tarheel, WDCR PDX, etc)
One Lap of America.
Maybe Redline Time Attack.
Some NCC and Cumberland autoxes.
Neil
if i can find the funding, vw jetta tdi cup: http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum/showthread.php?t=958948
maybe some track days if i have time (wdcr pdx, nasa, trackdaze, etc) and redline time attack. also, some autocrosses in the mix (ncc, AI).
i'll also be busy with traveling around the US & korea/japan/canada to make my schedule even more hectic.

$$$$$$$$$$$$
Teuton 03-17-2008, 03:46 PM NCC Autocross.
I wonder who will let me drive their car?:eyecrazy
Don't know if I'll be in X class or try to get Eric to let me drive his car again. Dang that 318 is so much fun.
Pete
getfast 03-17-2008, 05:34 PM Mine, although I'm often too busy working to drive...
My autoX car: lightly modded 98 M3 sedan (http://www.get-fast.net/m3), a bit soft and overweight but locally competitive if nobody fast shows up and the course design is just right and I guess correctly on tire pressures and the weather is favorable. :D Class NASA-X D regardless of tire choice, or SCCA STU on street tires, or SCCA BSP on track tires.
Borrowed/rented track car #1: 94 325i sedan, NASA Spec3 prototype & chassis #1
Borrowed/rented track car #2: 93 325is coupe, NASA Spec3 chassis #2
My own track car eventually: some similar version of borrowed/rented E36s #1 and #2, pending time & money
Autocross: with NASA Mid-Atlantic at VMP in Dinwiddie and/or Langley Speedway in Hampton (http://www.nasaracing.net/autox.htm), hopefully also with Tidewater Sports Car Club at ACU-4 in VA Beach (http://www.tidewatersportscarclub.com) as my schedule allows
Track Events: NASA Mid-Atlantic HPDE 3 Advanced & HPDE4 Instructor groups (http://www.nasaracing.net) plus TrackDaze Advanced/Instructor groups (http://www.trackdaze.com). Also instructing for Racing Adventures @ SP-Jefferson, and for the Redline Time Attack @ Shenandoah.
Time Trials: NASA Mid-Atlantic (TTD class, in any of the three cars mentioned above, but hopefully not the M3 because I'm trying not to track it anymore and therefore have no more track pads for it)
Related Activities: as much karting as I can afford, specifically all the NASA-MA kart enduros at VIR (http://www.nasaracing.net/autox.htm), and occasional trips to G-Force (http://www.gforcekarts.com)
Needless to say it's a bit of an "in between year" for me hahahaha,
Jon
MdMcoupe 03-17-2008, 06:22 PM Man you guys waste a lot of time racing these BMW's on the weekends. Get a life.....:shifty
LaunchBackwards 03-17-2008, 06:38 PM Man you guys waste a lot of time racing these BMW's on the weekends. Get a life.....:shifty
Foreal, I'm gonna start tracking the Mercedes. Nothing feels like a Mercedes.

Wait till some of these guys discover women! :buttrock
j/k ;)
xvxax 03-17-2008, 07:56 PM Pretty sure they have cooties. I stay far away, disrupts racing budget.

I married mine so that I could use her salary for tires and mods. Does that qualify as good groundwork for a marriage?
AND YES, I SAID I GOT MARRIED.

omegaraceshop 03-18-2008, 12:08 PM i hope to get some instruction from Scott this year. He is the f'n Man!
swing off dem nutzz' til dey rip off
omegaraceshop 03-18-2008, 02:04 PM scotts nutz are actually hard to cling to because of the lack of hair.
surprisingly no wrinkles either. smooth as some Jumbo eggs from Wegmans.
i don't call Scott Scott though, his name is Powder.
He bent my civics trailing arm just by looking at it once.
He also threatened me with a Spork for getting his Guitar Hero guitar greasy after dinner. i've found the only thing to calm him down is Grape Drink.

You should just come out to an autocross if you've never done anything like this before. There's not going to be any money for you to win, but you will have a lot of fun and learn your car. If it's your first time, you probably aren't going to be competitive any way. As far as classing, if you are going by SCCA solo rules (autocross), I believe that OBD-1 M52 puts you in SM (Street Mod). Unless you put your M50 valve cover on it, then you can run in STU (j/k).
getfast 03-18-2008, 03:54 PM It would be more fairly classed with NASA-X (novice, then class E.)
m20b27es 03-18-2008, 08:03 PM I autox in a cammed e30, I believe in F-mod. I plan on going to as many sunday events as I can, as I work saturdays. I might bring my mini out a few times in G-stock.
I also plan on going to Oktoberfest this year cause I used to live up that way.
F-mod?? what are you racing a formula car or tube chassis?
cams put you in Street Mod in autox.
Biggins 03-18-2008, 09:46 PM Other things are taking priority for me this year, but I do plan to be out to some events. I believe this will be an in-between year for me with where I am in my life.
Autocross, Street Survival, Oktoberfest!!!
1995 318i, 1991 318i
All with suspension mods/decent tires
All NCC events, a few WDCR (no season subscription this year)
NCC = PT or MT, WDCR = DSP
Spectating/supporting friends at the track
Shady3One3 03-20-2008, 03:05 AM Splitting track time between E46 and S2K, as many events as my wallet allows. Definites: hyperfest, o'fest, a lot of the trackdaze events, wherever else the RRT race schedule may take me.
LaunchBackwards 03-20-2008, 03:52 AM S2Ks don't belong on the track. :nono

omegaraceshop 03-20-2008, 08:51 AM Anyone signing up for the Monday, April 28th, 2008 driving day being put on by Capital Driving Club and NERD racing?
http://www.capitaldrivingclub.com/hpde.html
I've heard some iffy things about Capital driving club.
Thoughts? Reflections?
I'd was thinking about going if i can get my seat installed and a track wheel/tire setup for my M3.
Maybe i'll just steal Cancer Scotts Kosei/Neova setup.:alright he stole my Chopsaw anyway.
S2Ks don't belong on the track. :nono
especially with balls slow drivers

CDC will just put cone gates on corner entry and exit, but not at the apex. :mad
I can install seats like a pro now.
LaunchBackwards 03-20-2008, 09:10 AM especially with balls slow drivers
If I had Skip Merryman's car, I would have won the HPDE gold medal prior to Redline at SP.
John V 03-20-2008, 09:42 AM All WDCR Solo events
As many AI events as I can fit in
Devens NT
DC Pro
Toledo Pro
Atlanta Pro (?)
Milwaukee Tour (?)
Pro Finale
Solo Nats
And a motorcycle track school if I can find the money / time.
omegaraceshop 03-20-2008, 10:46 AM i have no problem installing seats. just hoping they will be low enough with the brackets, and that i don't have to modify them and reweld everything.
i'm a chunky 6'4" so i need a bit more headroom for my helmet.

You should just make four pieces of steel and connect the seat directly to the bolts in the chassis.
omegaraceshop 03-20-2008, 11:23 AM i'm still figuring out the setup.
i ordered an OMP Design 2 seat along with e36 bracket and slider.
i also have a Corbeau FX1 seat which i really like so i might install that if i don't like the OMP seat.
will have to see how tall the OMP bracket and slider setup is. i'll modify it if i have to in order to gain another 1 or 2 inches of headroom.

I wish I had tools/experience to modify brackets. I used a hand file for three hours to remove about eraser tip's worth of steel from the base bracket. :(
omegaraceshop 03-20-2008, 12:13 PM well i have a small MIG welder along with grinders, chop saw, drill press, etc. So let me know if you ever need a hand.
I Fabbed up Scotties exhaust on his M3 for him last summer. have done quite a few other exhausts.
Fabbed all the brackets for some Momo Start seats in our friend ocase's civic. i also built his engine (sohc 1.6) and custom fabricated all the turbo setup and charge piping (except the turbo manifold). i believe that did like 220whp 240wtq on the dyno. was setup with Autocross in mind. i think Scottie even got FTD with that car at one BMWCCA autocross before we completely redid the setup and before it was dyno tuned.
I'll probably be buying a TIG welder sometime this summer once i move to a place with a garage. so will be able to do aluminum then.
Will probably move to the Sterling/Herndon/Assburn area.
I miss having a TIG. my roomie says he doesn't really need a garage space, so half the garage might be a small shop setup. drill, tubing bender, welding table, etc.

Hot. I'll just go to you instead of filing steel manually.
