I am running with a K&N air filter. It has been recommended that I remove it and return to an OEM filter. The complaint is that the oil from the K&N will foul up the throttle body of the electronically controlled M62 V8 engine. Can anyone validate that opinion?

the only problem with a K&N is that if you over oil it after cleaning, the oil will make its way onto you MAF sensor, which causes it to give bad readings, easy fix though, just spay the element with some electrotic contact cleaner. a K&N filter will not effect you TB one bit

very lightly oil it.
Don't prep it like its going into the frying pan.

Or you could use the Amsoil AFE filters. They require no oil and don't cost that much more. That is what I am running on my E36.

The only problem with the Amsoil filters is they have limited sizes VS the K&N. I had a heck of a time finding one that worked.

Frankly, thats bull. IVe run K&N on my SC'd M3 for 8 years and never had a problem with oil in either the MAF element which is where over oiling would place it, or elsewhere. If you make a mistake and overoil, just leave it sitting on a newspaper for a couple days, or as long as it takes to dry it up some. When you get experienced with it youll know how to make it pink without over oiling.

I have a K&N filter also and I have never had a problem with the oil going into the hfm. I would think if you over oil the filter you could have an issue but on a regular service with a light coating this shouldnt be an issue.

I have also been using K&N filters for years on my E36 and there is one currently on my E46 as part of my VFE S/C install. I think the jury may still be out on just how 'bad' K&N filter are. However, since I found the Amsoil filter in the size I needed at not much more than my K&N filter (my K&N was damaged and needed to be replaced) I figured I would give it a try. I will probably replace the K&N on my E46 M3 with an Amsoil one when the time comes as well.
