Unplug it to clean up inside. Sam told me it may need to do so.

I think he might be refering to the vanos filter that needs to be cleaned at oil change intervals. It is part number 23 in the above link.

I mean unplug the whole vanos from the engine.....

easy to take apart (i meant the whole vanos)...but your ordinary garage will not be able to put it back...trust me...there are not too many garage that can work on our m3 in hong kong
only that you can clean with ease is the vanos filter....but they seldom got dirty unless u never change your engine oil

So........could be DIY to replace the vanos filter?

if it is not dirty, why change? plus it is a wire mesh filter...difficult to break
yes...you can diy very easy

I do not think that you change it. Just clean it.

you change it. there is a replacement, and it's very cheap. you can see the part number in the link a few posts up
