VintageBMW 03-14-2008, 08:33 AM No they are NOT all made in Munich. There is a manufacturing facility in Spartanburg, South Carolina which produces the X5, Z4, M roadster etc. So, no duty to bring one of these back across the border. The Zentrum (BMW museum) is on the same site, I believe. I am not sure about the "different" metal for California cars though, so your buddy may still be on crack! More information here: http://www.bmwusfactory.com/ mitch500 03-14-2008, 01:38 PM new 1 series and the m3 are made in the Regensburg facility in Germany. Big false there. In order to be exempt from duty, ALL components must be made in the US, Canada, or Mexico. That is not the case here. kgibbs 03-14-2008, 10:32 PM Big false there. I could be wrong but as far as I know all North American produced BMWs are exempt from duty those being cars/SUVS etc whose VINS begin w/ 1-USA built 2-Can built 3-mexico 4&5 US built for export. Most if not all X3 and X5 start with 5 usually. Best way to check is phone border services. Ken sc88 03-14-2008, 11:07 PM I know some 3-series are also made in South Africa. And when was the last time you brought a Z4 over the border? Maybe you want to tell this guy in Regina that just brought his back last week, that he should call up the feds, and let them know he really want to pay the extra 6.1% after all. http://www.bmwregina.ca/e107_plugins/forum/forum_viewtopic.php?8217 lagin 03-15-2008, 10:48 AM My M Coupe was exempt from duty - just had to pay the usual taxes. mitch500 03-16-2008, 05:46 PM http://www.bmw-plant-regensburg.com/lowband/com/en/index.html that plant was friggin massive, we had to take a bus all around the plant to different areas of production several times. 97'scort 03-17-2008, 07:01 PM And when was the last time you brought a Z4 over the border? Seems funny since I can't bring Audiocontrol stuff over without duty (built near Seattle) since they have 2 transistors made in Taiwan, but they can bring BMW's over with parts that obviously come from elsewhere. |
