Sorry if this has been addressed in another thread, but I searched for over 2 hours and couldn't locate a thread that answered my question. I looked through the Bentley Manual and couldn't find much on it other than a vague reference in a couple of paragraphs. Google search dug up nothing too.

The best I can come up with is that you have to remove the intake manifold to get at the sensors. You might be able to fudge a bit on the front one. The rear, I don't see any other option than to remove the intake manifold. I decided to replace them both since I don't want to have to do it again in the near future.

If any of you more experienced BMW mechanics out there know a trick or two to make this easier, I would love to know.

If not, I'm going to tackle it probably at the end of the month, I don't really have time now to do it. I will also try to document what I did in word and pictures, if I remember (I'm a FOG and can't remember my name half the time).

Thanks in advance for any help!

the trick is to remove the intake manifold. It's super easy, and will come off in about 20 minutes if you're a decent mechanic. An hour if you drink beer and drag your feet.

Thanks, I figured that is what has to be done. Just thought someone might have a trick. I don't know how good a mechanic I am, but I usually get the job done. Lucky for me, I don't drink, so maybe it will only take 30 minutes.

BTW, I'm working on the registry entry right now.

A local guy did it without pulling the intake... I don't know why though.

Pulling the intake is pretty easy and makes is a quick job at that point.

Cool, can't wait till you get enough posts to post pics! I don't drink when I work on cars either, and I don't drink anymore anyway, doctor's orders for the next few months.

:(

I always keep some brews in the fridge at the shop.. It always keeps the projects flowing smoothly.

Thanks, that seems to be the consensus so far. That's what I'll do.

Anyone know if driving the vehicle with a bad knock sensor will hurt it at all?

not as long as you don't knock... that means premium and staying away from full engine load scenarios.

Thanks for the info.
