Hi all,
I have a '95 525i and the sunroof switch only works when you slide it forward or back, not when you push up on it which is supposed to close it. This makes it a real pain to ensure that I get it closed correctly. I replaced the switch itself but still have the same problem, any ideas?

Check the wiring to the switch.

Its supposed to tilt when you push it in. You can sync the motor by holding it forward for 5 seconds or somthing like that. I had to sync mine when i disconnected the battery with it open (she got all confused).

I just went out and r&i'd the switch again. Now the sunroof is opening when I slide back on the switch and it is tilting up when I push up on the button but now it won't close when I slide forward on the switch. I even held it down for a while and nothing. But this direction was working just 30 min ago. Which leads me to believe that it is some type of learning/programming that needs to be done.

you push up, it tilts up, you slide it back, the window does the same, and to close it you push forward on the switch, is this what your doing?

The diagram below is from my e38's owners manual...but the procedure is the same on the e34 for sunroof reinitialization:

The manual says press upward on the button for 5 seconds...I say press & hold the button a bit longer (10~15 seconds)...it should tilt upward...and if you continue to press & hold the button...the roor panel will usually make another noise and appear to move upward just a bit more. After that second noise/movement...the roof panel is reinitialized and should hopefully work correctly.
