Tired of your chrome window accents?
have some free time?
then this project is right for you!

well, lets start with the troops:

and of course:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v20/lilxyoshi/Blackoutttt/blackoutfTW20.jpg

to bake your paint :)

now that you have everything you need. Gently sand the chrome trim with Medium grit sandpaper. BE CAREFUL when you sand since the chrome is really close to the paint. you dont want to scuff up your paint now do you?

keep sanding until it looks faded and rough. then wipe down the area from debris using your cotton wiping instrument.

then CAREFULLY mask everything using your tape and newspaper(or plastic bags) to cover everything to protect those areas from overspray.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v20/lilxyoshi/Blackoutttt/blackoutfTW5.jpg

now that you've covered the area, wipe it again once more to get rid of the debris and dust that collected on it while you were masking.

then spray it with the Duplicolor Adhesion Promoter can. you can do heavy on the coats on this can since it dries clear anyway and it will improve your paint adhesion. Just don't paint a lot in one area since the paint will tend to run.

then paint the area. Do 4-5 Coats of this stuff so you wont have to do it in the near future. wait 15mins after each coat to make sure that they're dry.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v20/lilxyoshi/Blackoutttt/blackoutfTW8.jpg

then use the clearcoat and give it 5-6 coats. make sure to wait 10mins after each coat to assure that it's dry.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v20/lilxyoshi/Blackoutttt/blackoutfTW12.jpg

on the 6th coat. make sure to wetsand the trim to smooth it out even more. then give it a last and final coat.

now just wait for the clearcoat to cure in another 30mins just to make sure. and then unmask

now sit back and admire your hardwork !

not bad @ all. I Carefully Masked :)

the europlate is fake, lol. my SO made it from foam board since I keep telling her how long my plate from europlates.com is taking forever to ship

as for wheels, rondells are almost done. the bolts are taking forever. oh yea, I just need to save up some more $$ for tires since financial troubles came all at once

wow.. didn't realize your car is blue -LOVE IT!.. (no offense.. but most of your previous pics have been with crappy camera.)

When I painted mine, I actually took off the rear portion, the rearview mirrors, and the door pieces. I also used A LOT more to cover the car..

I see some chrome at the front of the door :D

A for the write-up
B- for execution

Car looks great though... you seriously need to tell us more about the custom lip. Looks way better than version 1.0

I can always cover that side up with vinyl

I'm thinking some sort of plastic piece from home depot or something used in the first version (snow plow)... then cut and added... maybe a reiger splitter?

Nice!

But please, for the love of all that's holy throw away that cardboard you call a euro plate.

Get a plate from www.mattman-enterprises.com ... they'll get it to you in a couple days (especially with you being in cali as well as them), and they're a lot cheaper than wherever you ordered from.

thanks for the site, but apparently, I already ordered a plate.

Just waiting for it to get here.

sorry to burst your bubble, but the plate stays since it has a special meaning in my heart. :)

For any others doing this, I would recommend spending the extra $3.99 and get a 9 x 12 ft plastic drop cloth and cover the whole car. If that car was lighter, you would see all the overspray you just got all over it. I bet the windshield has a stripe of overspray where it was exposed.

Great write up though :)

Great writeup! The only thing(s) I would add are:
1) wipe everything you'll paint with wax and grease remover (from an automotive paint store) before sanding. Even if the trim is "clean", any residue will be ground into the trim during sanding, causing adherence problems. And,
2) do the basic masking off before sanding as well. This will prevent an errant sandpaper edge hitting the surrounding paint, which will happen no matter how careful you are.

As a side note, I would think FINE sandpaper is enough to scuff the trim for paint. Medium grit is a bit aggressive. All you want to do is take the smoothness off of it so the paint has some "tooth" to adhere to. Looks nice though.

Nice job, I definitely would have masked the whole car off though.

That lip looks like a DTM splitter hacked up with a chunk of plastic above it. A little plastic weld & blending and you may have a nice lip. Care to show us some better pics?

I think those 15's are hot. Look good slammed.

I also think your car would be hot with a roof rack!

oh. and people trying this, mask off the whole car. You will get overspray.
