I have a 1989 bmw 525i and on two occasions it has cut off while driving (moving) without any warning. Could this be a fuel problem something requiring a fuel pump or is it something electrical. It did start back up after several tries. It has also been very hard to start at times requiring several tries befor it starts. I replaced the fuel filter and this seemed to help a bit but now the same thing is happening again to a lessor degree. I had the starter and the alternator tested so I dont think my problem is there I also bought a new battery which has also been tested.

first of all

does it just cut out? or doe it sputter and stall and then quit?

are u low on gas when this happens?

come man!! gives us better desrcription here...

and why would u have the starter looked at? obviously the cars running so the starter has nothing to do with it!

yes it just cuts off without warning. I had a half of tank of gas and I was driving uphill in a parking garage when it cut off. I thought maybe the starter was going bad because of the hard starts I had, but it was turning over just couldn't get it to completely start.

No I wanted to make sure it was the fuel pump first. I had a couple of mixed reviews. The pump cost me about 300 bucks.

I haven't had a chance to check the fuel pump. The car had a 1/2 of tanl of gas when it stopped and I was going up a very steep hill.

It just cuts off no warning or anything. After a couple of tries it started back up again and I havent had it cut off for the last couple of days but it is still hard to start.

I thought the starter was going bad because the problem started with the hard starts I imagined that maybe that is where my problem came from and I wanted to rule out the small stuff first.

slug build up. my friend who has a beat up nissan sentra limited edition :devillook

ran his car for a while on old crapy water like oil then we changed it but his engine started to just die when moving. he brought it to the mechaninc and he poped open the oil pan and guess what his engine had diarrhea :shifty

but i also think it was a mix of craped out o2 sensor and pvc valve being a piece of rusted metal

I think the fuel injectors just needed to be cleaned. I put about 2 bottles of that stp stuff in when the tank was less than half full. the car has been starting up and running okay so far. I will keep you guys posted if anything changes. I will be taking that fuel pump back to the store.

Check your fuel pump and DME relays as well as your crank position sensor.

Almost certainly a fuel pump if it runs fine and then itermittently doesn't run at all - the brushes wear and you get poor contact with the stator - runs sometimes and won't run others. Just put one into my son's '89 525iM with 194k miles - also replace the ICV and the ICV accordian hose. It's amazing how well that car runs - doesn't burn oil and is very smooth. We took it to the beach last summer and it matched my wife's '97 528iM in gas mileage (both did 29 mpg down and back) - a really great little $1200 car.
