View Full Version : Need some e30 help guys
yod88 03-10-2008, 08:50 PM hey
ive talked to augy and fredk bout getting an e30... so i figured id make a thread to get some thoughts on what to look out for etc in the NE area..
fredk has given me some good insight on what to look for when looking at the e30s as far as rust, etc..so i guess im ok there
but are there any models you'd stay away from? (i already know i dont want the "e" models
motors.. what were used in the e30, which are better?
how do you guys think they do in the winter weather we get? i figure id get some all season tires and run the car year around (its gonna be my daily)
if anyone sees an e30 for sale somewhere in the NE area..lemme know :stickoutt
thanks guys
-Navid
M-technik-3 03-12-2008, 01:09 AM Buy one from far south as possible. Trust me 4 winters has destroyed my once garage queen. I have a nice untouched Eta Sport that will be next. But it's moving south.
BUBBASGIRL 03-12-2008, 01:14 AM i love the eta , i see nothing wrong with it , fun with a 4.10 , but not in the snow , if you do run it in the snow i would put some extra weight in the trunk and put 4 snow tires on it, good luck, if you need a lift to check it out let me know. good luck

The main things I would stay away from would be rust and autos.
The e30 came with the m10 (early 318's), the m42 (late 318's) and the m20's (325's). The 325i and late 318s would both be good choices if you don't want an eta. 318's also get amazing mileage.
I drove mine all last winter and I had no problems at all. I would recommend snow tires though, they make a huge difference.
Good luck
pennpen 03-12-2008, 01:19 AM is there something wrong with the e30 auto tranny? or is it just because its a auto lol
JBpka06 03-12-2008, 01:20 AM definitely get an 89+ 325i or a 91 318is. They are the best looking with the plastic bumpers. 325 has the m20 and the 318 has the m42 motor.
I drive mine with all seasons in the winter, so its doable, but I would definitely recommend a nice set or snow tires for winter.
BUBBASGIRL 03-12-2008, 01:22 AM no just an auto kinda blows , and every auto i buy is a parts car and the tranny has s%&$ the bed bed at like 140k,
E30SPDFRK 03-12-2008, 01:26 AM lol, you should of fit right in over on r3v.
BUBBASGIRL 03-12-2008, 01:28 AM well he just asked the question, i thought it was a polite way of saying the auto trans sucks.
E30SPDFRK 03-12-2008, 01:31 AM Oh, I thought you were making fun of him because he just bought an e30 auto with 140k on it.
BUBBASGIRL 03-12-2008, 01:34 AM didnt even see that , thats the truth all are autos, all are junk and none have too many miles
E30SPDFRK 03-12-2008, 01:40 AM Auto was made by GM iirc. Just don't rev it in neutral and it should be fine.
pennpen 03-12-2008, 01:42 AM y? will it blow up and open a time riff?
if so brb
BUBBASGIRL 03-12-2008, 01:44 AM the ones i see dont blow up, they slip , from my exp. the slip comes before failing completely
E30SPDFRK 03-12-2008, 01:44 AM Yes blow up, not too sure about the time riff though.
pennpen 03-12-2008, 01:46 AM oh yah can i get a new shifter thing? i hate the T one, the pistol grip one i like
E30SPDFRK 03-12-2008, 01:50 AM Convert to a 5 speed and you'll have a bunch of nice knob choices available ;)
pennpen 03-12-2008, 01:53 AM if i decide to keep it after getting me e36 again ill make it a track rat so a 5-speed would be needed
pennpen 03-12-2008, 02:01 AM around how much to tint a 2-door e30?
M-technik-3 03-12-2008, 08:02 AM The die because nobody ever does proper maintance on them. I have owned two verts that have autotragics and if maintained they are fine for folks that can't/won't drive a standard shift car.
The box is not bad.
savage217 03-12-2008, 08:46 AM My friend had an eta with a 3.73. Thing was slow as balls but fun. If I was getting an e30 I wouldnt get anything less than a 325i.
FredK 03-12-2008, 08:55 AM is there something wrong with the e30 auto tranny? or is it just because its a auto lol
:lol3
Mostly I think autotragic owners don't change the fluid. Ever. This would definitely cut its life short. :(
RedHoodRidah 03-12-2008, 02:13 PM Teh M42 FTW Fred Knows what I'm talking about lol.
I rocks my m42 hard.
JaredM3 03-12-2008, 02:50 PM Make sure u check them out for rust...the boxed out jack point area is a common place that rusts, so made sure u poke around the undercarriage to make sure your finger or a screwdriver isnt going to go though...
My old e30 is floating around Boston somewhere...
pennpen 03-12-2008, 04:27 PM well good thing the one i got was dealer maintained, so the gear box should last a while
i see some tranny fluid flushes in the records
JaredM3 03-12-2008, 06:30 PM And make sure the first thing you do when you get the car if its a 6cyl is change the timing belt...
Mine snapped and trashed the motor........but i built a new one, and parts are cheap...
pennpen 03-12-2008, 06:33 PM it has a new timing belt and water pump aside from other things with receipt from inskip
pennpen 03-13-2008, 10:46 PM how do you replace fog light bulbs on a 89? do i take the 4 bolts in the back out?
oh yah the machine at walmart said to use h1-55/h3-55 so i grabbed h3s....... wrong ones? [edit] yup wrong ones, just checked owners manual crap
