to elaborate on joerodds response if you don't know about vht nightshades it's a transparent black spray paint made for lighting so you can spray your lights and smoke them as dark as you want but the light will still shine through. a can which is enough to do usually two taillights and maybe a little more depending on how dark you do it runs around 15 bucks. another option is using laminex film, they have two shades/darknesses of black a light blue, yellow and a clear film to put over your lighting for the desired look and this is a little more than the vht nightshades spray but looks ALOT better IMHO. anyway good luck.

well i figured out that a body shoul dwould do 10% black and 90% clear.
but another thing you can do is go to a hobby shop and get the model car window tint spray paint and it works great and looks nice too.

yea ive used this stuff and i always get the worst results. it ALWAYS crack and stuff after it dries, no matter how light of coats or what the temperature is out. so i was going to try something new

I've been using it for years with a 100% success rate on at least 20 lights. It all depends on the prep (light sanding and cleaning), spray painting skills, ambient temp, and the clear coat. I have never seen niteshades paint crack ever, I have seen plenty of non-cleared examples that fade/go flat in no time though.
You can get perfect results and save a bunch over using poly-urethane clear with a bit of black mixed in, which will need to be sprayed by a shop. Just get an friend to spray them with some rattle can experience.
Here are some of my VHT'd lights with Duplicolor clear. I love this stuff:

It's all about the prep. You have to jewel and sand your lamps for it to adhere correctly. Doing multiple thin coats helps too.
And Tamiya smoke works better and is easier to find than Nightshades - with the proper prep you can also use it to make small chrome bages and emblems 'black chrome'.
