Minnesota typically will get one or two really good snowfalls in the middle to end of March. By good snowfalls I mean 12+ inches. The snow typically melts off in a day or two, but it causes a day or two of havoc. Never pull cars out of storage permanently until the beginning of April.

Also, it's best to wait until the salt gets washed off. Sand is bad too, but the salt is the real problem.

I've been driving my vert all winter (well, when on dry days at least). I dont think (or at least hope)the salt/crud on the road will destroy it, and I did wash it regularly, so what crud it did see didn't spend too much time on her.... My view is its a car, that's what it is for, esp. since my "winter car" costs multiples of the M....

If the sun is shining Sat morning, then I'll be taking the 328 out of hibernation. It needs to be washed anyway - so I'm not sweating the salt too much. The only real issue will be if I can actually get to the car or not (it's buried pretty deeply in the garage...)

Should be a nice way to "introduce" all my new neighbors to the 328 - waking them all up at 8:30am Saturday as I try to idle quietly out of the neighborhood :buttrock

Cars are meant to be driven....but if my 81 280ZX and my 82 320i were driven in the winter they probably wouldn't have gotten much further than 1990.

I don't mind sand at all...unless you have a bike or a $30,000 paint job the people who wait for the street sweepers are just missing out on wonderful springtime driving.

A couple little rock chips, dings and scratches just mean I drive my car.

That's terrible. That bites.
My guess is that they were watching you when you parked and saw you toss something into the glove box.

Alright, a lot has happened in the past week. First off:

I got to drive 2 E92 M3's this week, the red one and a silver one. When the silver one was getting PDI'd, I went with the tech on the test drive and we got it up to 80 in to time at all. I'm confident that it would keep up with the M5 if they were at a light.

We delivered the red on last Saturday (not yesterday) that I detailed to a guy about my age from, where else, Shakopee on the reservation. I detailed it last Saturday.

We got a Jerez Black M3 Sedan on Wed that I haven't gotten to drive yet.

Motorwerks and BMW NA are giving $9,600 worth of incentives total on a Z4 roadster lease. So Max and I are getting them. I haven't ordered mine yet, but he put in his order. My payments on it are an astoundingly low $179 a month. 2 years for 12,000 miles a year with $1,141 down. Sure, the Z4 Roadster isn't my first choice. I would have done the coupe or the M without thinking. But the deal was only for the Z4 Roadster 3.0i and 3.0si. For a 2008 BMW it's worth it I think.

This is what mine will be:

It was made for me specifically by the dudes that did some other work on my car in Atlanta (TRM, techno550 and ///M3///M5 on the FI board). I think it was based largely on the euro system but required some modification to allow it to fit around the TS. It is super stealth (including its radiator), nearly invisible. I dont recall what I paid for it, since I had cam work, tuning, and a few other mods done at the same time. I havent had it in near 100 degree weather, but in 85+ late last fall, being pushed fairly hard, the oil temp never broke 200, so it seems to work well.

On a separate note, I went to Gale's Auto Body in Blaine to see what they would charge to refinish and repaint my front bumper as opposed to what Sears and Master Collision charged. Gale's wound up estimating at $650.00 for repair/repaint. The front bumper is pretty pitted and stripped of paint. They said it'd cost $1200.00 for a new painted bumper to be installed.
Sears and Master both said $500-600 for repair/repaint.

Shouldn't be more than $500-600 if the bumper is off and stripped already. I'd say just go to Sears.

Since its so quiet here- Anyone here know anything about the jag XK's circa 2002? The gf likes the way they look but aren't they higher maintenance than bmw and more land yachtish? How do they compare to the german cars? I just have no experience with them and they seem pretty scarce. i bet parts are hard to find?
I know a guy in passing (he lives 3 blocks away from me, owns a Ford GT:buttrock) that has an XKR of that body style. I'm uncertain of the year, but it's still the same as the 2002 XK your referring to. He tells me that it's aways in the shop for something it seems. Obviously thats an exaggeration, but I see it gone for 2 or 3 days at a time every so often. He has a 2 car garage and parks his GT and his 98' Suburban (he keeps it real:stickoutt) and the XKR outside, so that's how I can see when it's gone.

We all know that Jaguars and Land Rovers of that age aren't the most reliable cars. Even my boss's 2006 Range Rover Supercharged is in the shop at least once every other month. And that's a 2006.

Just because a newer looking XK can be picked up for cheap these days doesn't mean it's a wise investment. Sure, you can have a $15k car that MSRP'd 6 years ago at $65K. The exterior looks great, but IMO the interior is homely. Way too much nasty plastic for a car that's badged as a Jaguar.

But the maintenance costs are going to hurt. Unless your going to be doing most of the work yourself, I would suggest looking elsewhere. Since your looking at the Jaguar XK, I would suggest looking into finding a Lexus SC430. Doesn't look quite as good as the Jag, but the maintenance costs aren't going to be nearly as bad. After all, it's still a Toyota.

Oh, I keep forgetting to post this up.

At Motorwerks, we've had this black 1996 (97?) Dinan 850i sitting on the side of the building or in the ramp for as long as I've worked there. So almost 2 years now. The owner had brought it in for a new engine. Well, the engine had to be ordered obviously and it took forever to get there. So recently (a year ago) they did the swap and the owner never came to pick the car up or pay for it.

So Motorwerks has posted it for sale internally for the price of the lien on it. Like $6500 -$7000 if I remember correctly.

I think that's how the story goes at least. So if anybody is interested in the car, let me know and I'll ask if it's for sale to the public. It should be known the car is probably a POS.

No idea how many miles the engine has, to be honest, the whole "new engine" thing was just what I heard. However, I haven't heard anything else contradicting that, so I'm assuming it got a new engine.

Stopped by the Smart dealer down in Bloomington today during lunch
to check out their cars.
Kinda neat lil cars, they are bigger up close and seeing them on the road.
The engine is in the rear and its also rear wheel drive.
Three different models a base coupe 11,590
an upgraded coupe 13,590
a cabriolet 16,590

I didnt sit in one, but the interior space seems larger than
what I would have thought. You pop a cover in teh 'trunk'and
bam - the lil engine is right there in its 1 liter glory.
It even runs a staggered tire setup and the rears are pushed out
a bit futher. They have a 5 speed auto.

I might have to take one for a test drive, even though I have no intention
of buying one. The sales guys were pleasant even though I said I stopped
by out of curiousity only.

I just got the tires mounted on my M68s tonight at Motorwerks. On the way back, I was at the intersection of 70th & France Ave going west. While I was stopped at the light, a really clean Estoril E36 M3 coupe with black wheels passed me. Anybody here?

eBay:(

Ebay is probably better then Umnitza... :mad

I ordered a pair for my M3 sedan...got them, didn't have a chance to install it until the weather warmed up. The smoked tail lights didn't look right...one side was lighter then the other. At first I thought it was just the lighting, took the car out into the open area and still it didn't not look right. Also, one side was not lighting up when I turn my lights on or when I step on the brakes. I contacted Umnizta...horrible customer service and this isn't the first time I had to deal with them. I now have to send it back and they will "repair or replace". I had to send them multiple pictures because they kept saying they couldn't see it and the pictures didn't show the difference well enough.

I would not recommend any parts made by Umnitza...customer service sucks and the parts are poorly made.

Hmm, that's definitely a bad situation. I bought my Depo elipsoids from Umnitza and everything from the buying process to the installation worked flawlessly. What brand are the tails? Umnitza isn't a manufacturer like Hella/ZKW/Depo, they're just a distributor (is that the right word?). Kind of like how Best Buy doesn't make TVs, they just sell them.

My guess is that you got a lemon or something. If worst comes to worst, return them and ask for your money back:dunno

///M3Turbo

I know they don't make their own parts, but they still re-sell items as part of their line up. I ordered a bunch of parts from them thinking that I could do my shopping all at one vender...bad decision. I ordered my short shifter kit (UUC) through Umnitza and I finally received it much later then what I expected and when got it; I was sent the wrong DSR. I contacted them and they kept dicking me around and kept telling me the new parts would show up and not being able to tell me the status of the replacement item. I finally just contacted UUC directly and they sent me the replacement part right away. Now I finally installed the taillights and their's obviously defects with them and still they are giving me the run around. If you have a customer that purchased several items from you and have already had a headache trying to get one item replaced with the correct part ---- wouldn't you go out of your way to make that customer happy instead of dicking around???

I still have to send them back and I'll have to put the old ambers back on.. :)

Yeah that is stupid. I guess if I had a similar experience with a company I would definitely be in the same boat as you. Come to think of it, Umnitza has a supporting vendor on here, "Umnitza" (oddly enough:stickoutt) is his SN. PM him your info and situation and I bet it will get worked out. I almost forgot they had a representative on the boards...

The_Stig

Yeah, don't worry Dan and Jason, the time will soon come;)

But first THEY NEED TO FIX THE CAR:mad

The car's computor or w/e won't respond when they try to PDI it. And they can't find out why. I have a feeling they are gonna have to order a new part (DME/TCU/OBC type part) and sit on the car until it arrives and can be installed. Like 8 other employees did the employee lease and got their cars and love them. And I get the lemon...:rolleyes

If I were a regular customer, they would be kissing my ass and trying to make me as happy as a clam. But since I'm an employee, I don't get such treatment. If it ends up that I don't get the car until halfway through the month, I'm gonna go to Ric the new car manager and demand that I

A) Get a refund of half my first months payment
B) Pay half of my next months payment

Because I have a car I can't drive, and I'm not gonna pay for the time if it's not in my possession (as I made the first months payment yesterday) And they're not gonna give me a loaner (a rental) because I'm not 25, and they know I have another car to drive in place of the Z4.

They aren't going out of their way at all to make me, THE CUSTOMER, happy. I've bought two cars now from them. When am I going to see something in return?

Seriously...it's complete BS. I understand that it's not the dealerships fault, but BMW of NA isn't going to be making any stops in to make sure everything is good. So somebody should be held accountable here. If I were a normal guy buying this car, the dealer would take full responsibility to make sure I got my car in a timely manner. And if I couldn't get it quickly, they'd make arrangements with me to make me happy.

Yet somehow I doubt that the same will be done for me:(

But, with luck, this :mad will become this :evil2

Dinan S3

Andy, I thought one of your buddies was pulling me over last night at like 1:30am:stickoutt I turn right on a green and all of a sudden the Crown Vic that was going straight (at a red light, to go the same way I was) flipped it's lights on and came up behind me. I signal to pull over, and he drives past. I hadn't noticed that there was already a person pulled over ahead of me a bit which is where he was going.

Prior to that, I had gotten my oil pan gasket replaced (on the E36), and since my car was up there, we replaced the stock brace (which had to be taken off anyways) with an X-Brace. No leaks anymore and better handling. Good night overall I'd say.

Soon the 3.15 LSD will go in and I won't be driving a one wheel wonder:shifty

Kyle - what kinda of upgraded suspension did you put on your car?
I was trying to look thru the other minnesota treads, but gave up.

I had wanted to upgrade my aging suspension parts sometime this summer,
but after finding out that my rear spring had broken off a chuck.

Looks like I will have to bump that up a bit.
Figured since I would be replacing the stock springs away, and Seth agreed, might as well think about upgrading those.
Seems that hte HR sport springs and Bilstein sport shocks/struts is a common upgrade. I dont see myself dropping the cash on a fancy coilover or adjustable setup.
Right now it looks like around 700$ from turner for a full set, plus whatever JB
does for labor.

Thanks,

You won't need a helmet for DCTC events. The only things we really stress before the event is that you empty all loose items from the car (you can store stuff in the classroom on site if needed) and that your tire pressures have been checked.

See you next week!

That seems to be what a lot of E36 M3 owners want to do. The two cars are so similar once you've driven both.

Today I got my smoked Euro tails and installed them. Now that they're in, I'm done spending money on the exterior for a while:redspot...maybe a front lip eventually.

Stig- Car is looking great.....It's really coming along nice. Smoked tails make it look MEAN.

Crazy, I was on my way out from Applebee's in Stillwater tonight and in the parking lot I see another Hellrot M3 coupe. I would guess a 97 with DsII's and a Mtech wing. Otherwise looked stock. Very clean and had a personal license plate. Anyone see this thing around? I don't see too many E36's in my area so I was pretty stoked to see it.

Thanks! I was thinking about it after seeing my friend Max's Arctic 97' M3 with color matched side moldings. But considering my car is black and the moldings are already black, it's not a high priority. Although I agree that it would look very classy. Maybe down the road as I do like the idea...

My wife and I are thinking about selling our 540wagon and getting something
both smaller and less expensive. We want to start saving more aggressivly
for a house and get rid of some lingering debt

We are looking at something in the 8-10k range.
Something with a smaller engine to hopefully get better mpg,
probally still a hatch or small wagon.
Cars like the mazda protegee5, etc.

One I came across this morning was a 2002 impreza wagon.

Does anyone have any experience with either volvo's, subaru's or the mazdas?
(I found the MN subaru clubs website and will browse that and see if I
can glean any things to look for.)
Espically with cars getting almost to the 100k mileage mark.

Andy:

The E92 M3 with the DCT is in. Max says it's "fucking amazing". It looks just like the SMG selector, but it's a much better gearbox apparently. He said you'd want to know:dunno

Edit: I went and picked up my E36 tonight. Turns out I don't need to buy the M3 axles after all. Tim (who was doing the work) found out that all you need to do is take *something* (because I forgot what it was) out of the stock diff and put it in the new diff to hook up to my stock axles. So the 3.15 LSD (posi) is installed and it feels pretty good. It really feels like an M3. Note that it feels like an M3, it just doesn't go like one:stickoutt

You'll find that the Mazda Protege5 (aka P5) is a highly sought-after car by a lot of people. When I worked for Mazda, we would get a used one in stock and it'd typically be gone w/in 2 weeks. Some that were lower mileage were gone the minute they hit the lot. They're sporty, look good, handle good, are very reliable, and cheap and easy to fix. I've never met a person who has ever hated that car.

As for the Subaru, my step-mom had one and it was in and out the shop every other month. I can't say I've ever heard of them being very reliable. The only plus is the Subaru AWD, which is quite fantastic in the winter.

With Volvo, I'll leave you with this- A buddy of mine was at Borton Volvo with his parents' S80. He was talking to the tech after getting service done, and mentioned to the tech that his parents were debating keeping the car or getting rid of it since the warranty was about to expire. The tech told him in no uncertain terms that he did not recommend owning a Volvo out of warranty, PERIOD.
While I was working at Mazda/Maserati, we occasionally got Volvos in on trade. We rarely purchased Volvos for sale unless they were S60-R or S80. We took them in on trade, though. They ALWAYS needed maintenance and with the exception of the S60-R's, they were hard to sell because of the expensive maintenance and common break-downs.

If you think the Beam is expensive to fix, then avoid a Volvo like the plague.

Then I'll see you around! BTW, the car below is in for service, so if you really want to see it in person, ask Max or myself. It's something else...

And to the thread:
I don't want to re-tell the whole story, but here are the pics of an M5 that came in today. This is by far the worst thing done to a BMW I have personally ever seen in person. The paint job, that is. Maybe if the car was painted the same color blue, then it might be acceptable. But it would look like a Bass Boat:stickoutt

It was good talking with you again Brandon ("Carbonized", he was there tonight after Motorwerks closed). Good thing I decided to take the Z4 out on my break, huh? You got to see a fine example of Bavarian perfection...

was at motorwerks yesterday picking up some maintenance stuff. I was dissapointed because there was no m3 coupe to look at. Just the cinnamon interior sedan next to the m5. I asked one of the sales guys and he thought it might be on the ramp so we walked out there to find nothing. The sedan was a nice car but didn't wow me like i thought and the interior was dissapointing. Not much of a step if any from the e46. The sedan needs a diet. It's actually not a North Star BMW CCA event - it's all Motorwerks' event - they just asked us to help put the word out. I'll be there with a few other Board members representing the Club. It should be a good time - Motorwerks always does a great job putting together these types of events.
