I'm sure people have seen this, but I haven't been on CL for a while. It's a 3.23 LSD from a 98' M3 for $400. Big improvement from a non-M E36, or a 1995 M3.

I got followed from St. Boni to 13 by carver co. sheriff this AM. Did you know they have a special too to test window tint? Well, I failed the test and have to remove my tint, which is too bad since whoever did it did a very nice job. Bet I get stopped on the way home too.

Yeah -

An officer really wants to be a d*ck when he writes you a ticket for window tint. You must've done something that really ticked him off - or maybe he was just in a bad mood - because they generally won't bother you about tint unless they want to bother you about tint (I've had dark tint on my vehicles for over 20 years now with only one "incident"...)

I got my first, and only, window tint ticket about 13 years ago. At that time, only the State Patrol had the testing device.

He wasn't the first cop to see it, but I figured the day was coming. He seemed like a decent guy. I didn't do anything to piss him off. I did score an 18, instead of 50 so maybe he had a reason to stop me, instead of fighting crime. He didn't write me a ticket, but I bet he will next time.

So do you know what the tint rating is for your car? If the meter tool read 18%, was that marketed as 20%? Were you speeding? I've got 30% but haven't had any issues thus far.

Sheriffs, in my experience, really have a penchant for tint lawbreakers. I had 35%, and the law being 50% that apparently was a big enough gap to warrant chasing me down and threatening me with arrest and impound FIVE times. The first time was a warning and the next few times were all tickets -- he said to get it taken off in the next week but he continually pulled me over every day of the week as I went to work. Prick.

I had a FULL work schedule and couldn't have it removed until the weekend which was within the week I was initially allotted. For some reason he felt it was necessary to go back on his word and force me to pay in something like $500 (plus the cost of removing it...). Sometimes I think back and hope that old redneck bastard gets sodomized by a bear.

I bought it with the tint. It was 6:00 AM I was on the commute I've been doing for 10yrs. I was waiting to pull onto 7, I pulled in behind him, then he did the fake right turn and pulled in behind me. So I knew he was going to get me for something. The plates are new and he said he had no info on the computer. At least he didn't write me up or fine me.

And to the thread:
I don't want to re-tell the whole story, but here are the pics of an M5 that came in today. This is by far the worst thing done to a BMW I have personally ever seen in person. The paint job, that is. Maybe if the car was painted the same color blue, then it might be acceptable. But it would look like a Bass Boat:stickoutt

Yes. Quite a few people actually and some that even post here.
It was pretty cool to see them all together along with the old E30 M3, E36 M3 and E46 M3. Even a 2002 was in display to contrast the 1 Series.

I enjoyed seeing the cars up on the lift on display in the service area too.

The launch party was pretty fun, good food too. I parked the E30 M3 where it was sitting for the party, lots of fun that car... The E30 and 2002 both belong to Guillermo, who was also the first guy to get a 135i from Motorwerks. I talked with him for a little while...that guy had some pretty good stories about the 2002 and M3.

I saw your M there, Rimblas, right as I was leaving (checking the lot for super sweet BMWs) which made me wonder how many other members were there.

The tint meters are usually +/- 3% in accuracy, and the state allows for 2% darker than max tint level (i.e. 48%). My M3 has no aftermarket tint whatsoever and a meter of my window showed 87%. So theoretically, I'm at 90% (benefit of the doubt). If I got 35% tint, the meter would read between 25% and 19%. Food for thought.

I'm going to assume he can still get ticketed though. BTW, I got pulled over after the charity car show in St Cloud (Scored Best Import and 2nd overall :D ), the officer had the meter and it was 16%. I already planned on getting lighter tint, but I am not buying the 50%, you can barely notice the tint! I am going to get 40% which I don't beleive will grab the attention of the cops. That being said, I drive a yellow M3. Knock on wood after I get it put on that I won't be taking it off anytime soon. ;)

If the officer was able to articulate that the tint unnecessarily obscured the vision of the driver and that it was a safety hazzard to have window glazing that dark, the officer could actually impound the car and have the windows removed and tested (at the city/county/state's expense). The officer would have to articulate how the window glazing obscured the vision of the driver and how it created a safety hazzard (which isn't that hard to do). Problem is that the waste of resources and time would make it worthless to do. Frankly, if the car was really a piece of junk, I'd deam it a road hazzard and unfit for street driving and impound it on that basis.

Also, there are some tint meters that work like a paint meter and are point and click. Most departments just don't have them. State Patrol has some specialty equipment with their Commercial Vehicle Inspection units (the tahoes and suburbans cruising around) that they can use.

Just be glad you don't live in out-state areas where I know certain individuals that would respond in-kind to dropping the tint 4" to mess with the tint meters. Dropping the tint 4" is a pretty smartass (and I'll admit funny and creative) thing to do. I've known some older guys that would be prone to responding by removing those 4" of glass on the spot using a flashlight. Of course, some rural judges tend to be a lot less "ACLU-ish" than Metro area judges.

All that being said, I highly doubt that's the only thing wrong with that car. I'd just ignore the tint and start doing a roadside inspection on the vehicle and ticket the driver for every equipment violation I found. Minnesota's actually got some pretty assinine motor vehicle equipment restrictions and regulations. Granted, they make it easy to pull people over and do investigative stops (good for DWI enforcement and narcotics interdiction). 90% of the stuff that's illegal most cops won't ticket for though. And as a generality, I personally don't care about tint. Some officers just have a pet-peeve about it. It's all preference, really. I (and most officers) only test tint when the driver's being mouthy or stupid.

How long does it take for license plates to show up on the system?
What do you mean? Are you referring to when you get new conservation/personalized/veteran/etc plates or if you buy a new car?

The answer to either of those is - as long as it takes for the DMV to get it entered. They issue the plates and put the paperwork in a stack to be entered as soon as they get to it. It's typically 1-4 weeks.

If you were sent new plates (every 7 years), it's a toss-up. Sometimes they're already entered and sometimes they'll take a month to show up on record.

If Minnesota government and bureaucracy is consistent about anything, they're consistent about inconsistency.

I bought the car on April 2nd and put on my plates on April 17th and was told he got no info when he ran them. I was just curious how long it takes to get in the system. I'm still waiting for the dmv to send the title. I doubt he was expecting a 47yr old with a clean record, and had to justify the stop. He was nice enough to suggest I remove the tint to avoid a fine.

Saw an Audi at Anderson motorsport (eden prairie) yesterday with a front sticker in place of the license plate. It was full size and you had to be within 10 feet before you'd notice it wasn't the real deal. Supposedly they're legal and a company across the street from Anderson will make them for you. It looked quite a bit better than a front plate.

The factors of why you were stopped are based more around what time of day it was, what day of the week, where you were, and who pulled you over.
Chances are good that the intent wasn't necessarily to issue a ticket. Most traffic stops are conducted with ulterior motives.

There's no such thing as getting to "600" with "little build". I'm not even at 600 and I've spent close to what I paid for the car and that's considering I did pretty much all the installs/labor.

The 328 has a bit more meat between the cylinders versus an M3. Not sure of the 325 as not many use that motor for boosting. As with any motor, you can make crazy power but it's all about the build and how much time/money you send on it.

Hey MN BMW peeps... first, I saw an e21 in bright frickin neon green parked in South Minneapolis. I don't recall the exact streets but it was somewhere near 46th and Nicollet. Had a FS sign on it. I was just shocked to see another e21.

And speaking of e21s, anyone seen one at a junkyard recently? I'm looking for this stupid little box that goes in the engine bay between the transmission and speedometer. It's a service interval switch. On mine, the plastic shroud itself busted so the speedo cables don't have anything to screw onto. Just thought I'd see if anyone has one lying about or seen a parts car somewhere nearby. Thanks.

If there is a lot of spots available I most definately will, but I am curtious of there are few spots around. Hey anything I can do to prevent (another) a-hole from putting door dings on my Bimmer. BTW, let's see some pics of your Z bro.

Dont spread the word, but we replaced it with a 04 CR-V.
We debated back and forth between a Outback and this.
My wife tried to merge yesterday onto 494 in the CRV and quickly
realized that she has to relearn the amount of time and space required.
She forgot she driving a 4 cylinder!!

Hey Stig, you work at Motorwerks, right? Have you had a chance to test drive the new M3?

I'd like your opinions.

The_Stig

Yeah, I have. I've driven a Melbourne Red and Space grey coupes, and just yesterday I drove a Silverstone M3/4/6. They are really nice cars of course. Fast? No problem there.

But my very first impression of the E92 M3 the first time I drove it is that you know there are a thousand computers between you and the road. You have control of the car, but I just feel it's got too much in terms of technology. I mean, theres no dipstick for instance.

The M3 sedan I drove yesterday didn't have iDrive so it got me wondering. How do you even know if the oil is low when you don't have iDrive to tell you?

Overall, it's a very fun car, but the amount of computers on it make me feel distanced from the road. The potential for hoonage in the car is right up there with the M5 and M6. After having driven both many times I can see and feel the similarities between all 3. They're great fun, but I almost want to say the M3 is over engineered.

Of course, this is me driving them on the lot no faster than 30mph. But I was in one that got to 80, and it hauled ass.

IDk, just my impression.

Cool, how did it compare to say an E46 M3 as far as overall feel? My only concern is how heavy the car is, and if I do get one, it will be the vert which is rumored to add another 400 pounds.

Verts will always be heavier due to the extra reinforcements and extra mechanical components. The weight is not all that off from the Sedan weight though, so no worries.

I feel more connected with the E46 M3 just because it feels much more raw. But on the flip side, the E92 M3 feels more sophisticated and would probably be easier to live with. Plus, with being a new car, you have a warranty to fall back on.

The vert would of course add weight. But the thing is, your barely going to (if at all) notice the difference in terms of performance. Unless it was going to be a track car, the vert wouldn't be a bad choice. Sure, you don't get a carbon fiber roof or the great looks of the coupes body, but you do get the open air driving sensation. On the street in normal daily driving situations, the differences between the coupe and vert are going to be negligible.

Hey, how's it going guys. I don't own a Bimmer, but I'm from MN (Wayzata), and I just wanted to join cause it seems like there are a lot of MN guys around here and I've always been a BMW fan. Anyway just wanted to say hi, I own 07 silver Jeep GC SRT8, that took a pretty hard @ss pounding from a black e36 M3 TURBO last summer around 8am on 394 goin west. Just got my NX nitrous kit put in this week, and I want a rematch, might have been one of you guys, but like me you were probably still a little tipsy from the night before, so you may not recall it.

Oh and I'm heading up to the Brainerd drag strip on wednesday night, maybe I'll see some of you there. I saw that you guys rented out the track one of these weekends, so I imagine I'll see a few of you guys around.

Alright that's enough from the jag off with the Jeep. later

I'm sure this has been talked about elsewhere, but I want to be sure everyone here has heard:
the new ILSAC GL4 oils have less phosphorus to save catalytic converters, but this hurts "high performance" engines. Mobil1 0W40 still has higher phosphorus and the 15W50EP. Their other EP oils all have lower phosphorus. Check the Mobil1 website.

ie- you would start from the oem manifold/cat/downpipe and go from there? then bring my car in and do necessary tweaks sort of thing?

otherwise later in the year you guys could have my car as long as you wanted

I know it's going to be quite expensive etc.- believe i would have 4 other sets sold immediately though if were to go through with it. Hard to gauge just how much interest there would be beyond that point as i only know the owners with similar cars to mine who happen to post online. It may prove that making any part as expensive as custom headers for an older (relatively cheap) vehicle is just not worth it.

Dinan S3
06-06-2008, 10:56 AM
if i were to do it i would design a completly new flange and everything...complete header setup, it would be a lot of R&D but we've done it before...and the car would most likley have to be here to ensure exact fitment

Amateur here - but please don't tell me to search - I am too pumped! Just went to the APS Dynojet run after cars and coffee. My '97 M3 turned 209 HP with really nice flat torque curve. Two questions: how do I convert speed to RPM (5th gear run) and how low should my A/F ratio be? It was running around 13.

Two GT2s went after me - unbelievable. The first was over 450hp and the second was heavily modified - I didn't see that run. Wow, what nice cars!

What color is your M? I saw an Alpinweiss M3 yesterday (don't remember sedan or coupe) that followed me around Minneapolis. Have a scan of the dyno chart?

Silver. It'd be fun to learn more about this.

GEN3RIC

That's one of the unluckier M3s. Some S52s put down 220whp on a Dynojet, which tend to give higher numbers than a Mustang dyno. Still seems like a very strong motor though.

From my calculations.. you must have a 3.23 final drive ratio with a 5th gear ratio of 1. With an estimate tire height of 225/40/17, 150mph should be 7000rpm..roughly. To me that indicates you must have an aftermarket chip with a limiter removal. Without knowing your tire size it's hard to be accurate.

pretty typical #s if your stock......how many miles on the car?

ganseg
06-09-2008, 04:56 PM
The tires are 225/45 17; 127,000 miles on the car. Funny that the torque is higher than the HP. THe stock specs are 240 hp and 236 tq.

No, but I did just send my car off to John Biesecker who owns Sterling Enterprises.. got his information from Jorge Rimblas. No problem. I have 2 points of vandalism that I need special care for, and I think he might be able to fix them. 2 semi-deep keyings that are quite long. They really detract from the car and I'd like to avoid a respray since it has original paint so far. I hear Estoril is hard to blend too.

I am having him do full interior, exterior and engine bay though. Usually after a serious cleaning I can keep it clean from here on out because I spend 5-7 hours bi-weekly cleaning it myself. I can't get out the imperfections myself though. I'll keep ya posted. :)

Depending on how deep the marks are, you may have to use touch-up paint, wet sand, then polish and buff the car to get it to look decent. It'll never be completely clean, but pretty close to it if you do it right.

there WAS definitely a lot more than just boring veedubs there

(although i agree they are a VERY acquired taste... I mean even the best ones require a lot of knowledge and interest to appreciate imo. Plus if the E36 had been a vw think about the boner they'd have for it... and as things are now they, and i know that's a very vague "they", basically think they aren't cool!)

I was in the dub scene for a couple years. I got ragged on a lot because of my car and my choice of wheels for it (which were used on factory New Beetle RSIs). And because I was a bit younger and didn't quite know a polite or eloquent way to tell people to go eff themselves ;) I just got fed up with it. If you didn't do the same thing as everyone else you weren't cool. I'm too old (if 32 is "old") for that kind of juvenile behavior now.

Now see, those pix of that retardedly dumped R32, no thanks. I know it's airbagged and that's supposed to be "hawt," but really... no. It's just rice, but because it's a German car it's cool?

And yes, it's all in perceptions. I'm sure there are plenty of the VW nerds who think my e21 and/or my Saab are super lame. I don't care. I don't drive either of them to impress anyone, I don't care if I get noticed or spotted or if some punk twenty year old still living at home thinks my car is dope shiz. I drive'm because I enjoy them, and last time I checked that's what being a car enthusiast is about.

I haven't spent enough time around the BMW community to compare the two. I had such a sour taste in my mouth from the dub scene arrogance that I'm in no hurry to throw myself to the wolves again. Besides, everyone knows about the BMW and the porcupine... ;)

Not trying to start anything. I just said I'd much rather see some classic German cars than a bunch of VWs. I see those every day, how often do you see a gull-wing Mercedes?

I should mention the dub scene isn't totally filled with arrogant twerps. Thru the scene I met guys that I'm still good friends with.

Actually you got made fun of because your car was candy (or was it fairy) white on white :P We ALL know how sour you are about vw's, and you can let it go like.... 2 years ago ;) Remember, you weren't even at the show. You should really keep your opinion to yourself. I know its hard... The dub "scene" is just as diverse as the bmw "scene", and vice versa. Theres things to love and hate all over the european marque map.

Though I have VW roots, I'm glad the BMW guys came out. The reason I created eurowerks was to attract folks like the ones that frequent here. It's also the reason I shoot for PBMW as well as PVW. I love the cars regardless of the badge. I got sick of talking about 1.8T's vs VR6's all the time. I'm proud that we are finally attracting a more diverse crowd. It's what I was going for, and what this is all about. The stellar BMW's that showed up at eurowerks 08 really made me smile, and I thank you guys for coming out and making that happen. From what I hear it was well worth everyone's time :)

As for the german car show...without rice park, I admit I'm bummed about it. I REALLY enjoyed the atmosphere and such. Parking in st paul, pulling out a lawn chair, admiring the cars. I also was bummed when the guy that runs the german car show told me I better do my best not to interfere with his show next year, and overhearing him tell people he's heard "bad" things about eurowerks. Wonder what the bad things were... Good for him.

Next year we won't have it the same day, so you guys won't have anything to worry about. :redspot

Sears changed their name?

I know since Peter (former GM of Motorwerks) and Carl Pohlad bought the BMW side and are going to rename it "Pinnacle BMW" when their new store on Rockford Rd. opens.

So how exactly are the called TCA Imports? I are confused:(

if the E36 had been a vw think about the boner they'd have for it... and as things are now they, and i know that's a very vague "they", basically think they aren't cool!)

Hey Drew, as far as BMW's go the E36 is pretty commercial and nothing really to scream about compared to all the other BMW's(IMHO of course). I don't really see where you're going with the whole "they" thing or why you chose the E36 to talk about. VW's are usually compact, with a small motor and FWD. The E36 is none of those things.

THANK YOU!!!......and actually i find the VW community has a whole hell of a lot more snobbery than the BMW community....and i know im not the only one that thinks that

Your perception is your reality. For me it's about the cars and not the politics surrounding the people who have the cars. I've met tons of great "BMW people" and tons of great "VW people". No matter where you go there will be asshole's and there will be friends.

If you didn't do the same thing as everyone else you weren't cool. I'm too old (if 32 is "old") for that kind of juvenile behavior now.

I got news for you buddy, it's like that everywhere. Especially right here on Bimmerforums. What I like about the VW guys is they can stencil their paint, rock steelies, paint their window trim pink, and cover their hood in stickers and people will embrace it. You just don't see that kinda stuff on BMW's, and if someone does they get absolutely destroyed on the forums. It's a different type of style with BMW's. BMW's are more of a racecar inspired community. Who gives a shit though? Do the mods that you like, and if you can't take the criticism of others then don't post them up on the internet and then bitch if people don't like them. You said it yourself, you drive them because you like them. Seems pretty simple to me. If you go out on a limb and try to do something different, you can't turn around and get all butt-hurt because someone doesn't like it. you're 32! Man up!

Usually I wouldn't care to post about something like this, but we're all midwestern'ers. As long as we're into cars we're going to be around eachother and I think we should all be having fun together at the shows, on the boards, and at the track :cool

I'm really just saying the performance potential of the E36 is greater than that of the VWs without question (they aren't THAT light). I know there are specific cars out there that could be used to argue against me. I used teh E36 as a thinly veiled attempt to move the comparison in the direction of my own car without blatantly saying so.

I love a lot of the VW guys and their cars but no matter how i look at it i see the majority of VW modifiers (and this is obviously not the best cars so please don't take offense at this) as those who couldn't quite afford to mod a nicer German car with more initial performance (at least an audi, eh?). I do also have more of an understanding of the "culture" than i've really let on and have myself thought about building one of the "classics" rather than going American with my next project (my C43 isn't so much a project as a quasi-dd for when it's uber nice out weather wise). The point is i don't always feel like the vw guys are open to other vehicle types as much as they should be. We are all basically doing the same thing in modifying our cars as we see fit.

Yep, I called them and it stands for... Twin Cities Auto....
Someone on northstar said that even the sign changed out front.
I guess its only for the BMW side.?
The receptionist wasnt quite sure about the whole change, and said
people had been calling in all day.

i've had "silence" related plates on my cars for a while

i did consider doing something different with the C43 and brainstormed quite a few- I probably would have done a more confrontational plate had i known i would have it actually going fast after 18 months of ownership. I had a long list of plate ideas making fun of many other types of cars and emphasizing that i had a V8.

It's hard to laugh at many of the current AMG offerings as some of the cars are ridiculously fast despite looking quite pedestrian, eh? Also, the very few that are modified for performance(both older and new, but particularly old have a tendency to be done "right")

Hey All,
I'm hoping one of you can help me out. I had my drivers seat out this morning while I was replacing the clutch arm bushings in my M3/4. At some point I turned the key while the seat was out and now I have an airbag light staring at me. I have the Peake FCXII scan/reset tool but this won't take care of the airbag codes.

Does anyone have airbag scan tool that they'd be willing to borrow me for 10 seconds?

Thanks.

John

It was a 6sp, and i was very excited to find this out, i have to say it was pretty impressive, the roar it made was unreal. The one thing that felt strange to me was i just kept thinking that the car was holding back, like i had to turn off or on something. I tried messing with the dsc and some power button, but i wanted to focus on driving so i couldnt really mess with fine tuning.

I know this is gonna sound silly, but i wasnt at all unhappy to get back in my 03 540 mtech, dont get me wrong, the M3 is an amazing car, but its just a whole different feeling than my 540 or my old e36 m3. I also drove the alpina b7, that was really nice ride, the air conditioned seats were great, and there was plenty of power, not sure what engine is in that car.
