BraveUlysses 03-10-2008, 02:38 PM You can buy a Park Tool 32mm bike headset wrench for about 15 bucks at any local bicycle shop and it works very well.
The same tool can be used when you need to do tie-rod ends as well.

everycredit 03-10-2008, 05:05 PM Actually, it's called another wrench. Provide counter-torque while undoing the fan. Pain in the ass, but it works. 30 or 32 mm open wrench.

The fan nut has a left hand thread. If a gorilla did not tighten the nut last time it was put on you may be able to put your 32 mm wrench on the nut and strike it (the wrench) sharply with your hand or small hammer. This is how I remove it. By the way the engine's direction of rotation tends to tighten the nut so it is not necessary to tighten the crap out of it.

rad750 03-11-2008, 12:56 AM I have the counter holder tool for the 740i. I don't know the engine number for that motor. The same tool did not fit properly on my 750iL that has a M70 motor. I do not know if this tool will work for your engine, but you can borrow it. I live in Vancouver. PM me if you want to borrow it.

3DGE95Ti 03-11-2008, 01:22 AM Thx 4 the help guys! If my first attempt does not work I will give that bike wrench a shot!
Now I just need to wait tell my understeer.com fan delete kit with new waterpump Aluminum Thermostat Housing arrives! I cant wait!
85vert 03-11-2008, 01:49 AM Just did the FDM on mine this past weekend. Fan clutch nut was a PITA, like it was welded on or something. Bent everything I had trying to keep it from spinning. Autozone offers free loaner tools and got a fan clutch tool that was for a Ford (read these work on BMWs), but didn't on mine. I was also replacing the waterpump, so I cut the POS off with a hacksaw. Got half way thru cutting then the damn thing decided to come loose. Hopefully you get it off with no problems. Good luck.

Tell me how that works out, I was thinking of doing the FDM too.
BraveUlysses 03-11-2008, 07:15 PM Oh, and you should take a very careful look at the aluminum thermostat housing...there have been complaints of manufacturing defects due to poor casting.

Thx for the tip! I bought the aluminum one rather then the plastic if that makes any difference.
