View Full Version : Alpina Plaque
blitzed310 03-10-2008, 01:10 PM I am in need of the Alpina plaque dimensions, and pictures showing the exact location of where it is.
Any help would be appreciated.
This will be used for the E21 Legion plaques in an attempt to mimic what Alpina did.
jimdemonic 03-10-2008, 03:53 PM it's coming to this....... I think the guy that bought the car in GA. that real nice e21 has a plaque...I thought I saw one on the dash
jimdemonic 03-10-2008, 03:58 PM it wont let me post the pic of his car
myersport 03-10-2008, 06:30 PM How about just measuring the Idiot light panel for the seat belt/O2 sensor/reactor ? That's where most of us are going to put it, so it'd be nice to have a good fit. I'm not at my car now, or I'd measure it myself.

Did that already, but I still want measurements. And FYI, I don't know if this goes for all, but my 323i and the few that I have seen do not have a message center, so I don't know if the Alpina plaques will fit inside/outside of that area.

You mean the one on the dash?

I realize the most of the euro cars have a grill like molding instead of the message center, but I believe Alpina substituted a similar piece when they installed plaque. I just think that insetting it flush in the message center is the most logical solution, since 1) 90% of us have the message center in our cars and 2) No matter what the measurements, the euro owners will have to fab up a mount regardless, or retrofit the message center. The challenging part is that the message center in question isn't square, it's slightly skewed, as I am sure you realize since you've measured it already.
Just my POV.

CJ, I dont have a message centre either...i'll try to find a pic but i'm pretty sure it would be the same as on your 323.
If they end up fitting the 323 would you send any to Aus? I'd be interested in one... :)

Exactly! I'll take your measurements as well though.
Anton3 03-10-2008, 09:23 PM Here you go CJ.

myersport 03-10-2008, 09:37 PM Here's how I measured it, with elementary grade ruler and protractor:

The 6 1/8 sides aren't straight, however. They have a slight curve to them. It would be best to have the panel accessable to the plaque maker.

Jester323 03-10-2008, 10:05 PM Hmmm... I was kinda thinking it was going to replace either the message center or the euro panel that fit in there. I was hoping to remove my eiro panel and replace it with the E21 Legion plaque, not put screw holes in my near perfect dash & trim panels...
myersport 03-10-2008, 10:16 PM The screw holes would go in the message center (a donor easily found at salvage yards), not the dash. Plus the idea of an adhesive backing was brought up as well, eliminating any drilling.

john320i 03-10-2008, 10:30 PM this is awesome. so how long till you think they'll be ready?
And the question remains.................... can mine say Texas E21 Legion?
blitzed310 03-10-2008, 10:45 PM The plaques wont come with any pre drilled holes, so that is up to you on mounting. I will be using 3M tape on mine since my dash is in good condition.
We are going to narrow it down to about 5 regions. If you want a specific region you are on your own for ordering, but in the spirt of the Legion I would advice you to stick with a demographic region and not a state.
We should have these up as soon as Jim orders the materials. We were just waiting on final measurements. I had only a pre 80 dash to work with so I was not 100% sure that they were all the same. I would like to get 1 more measurement, preferably in 1/32nd or in mm so that it will fit perfectly in the center.
Thanks Dennis for the drawing!
Jester323 03-10-2008, 11:05 PM I don't have a message center, just a fairly hard to come by euro blank.
I just pulled out my digital calipers and will have exact measurements shortly...
Jester323 03-10-2008, 11:27 PM PS: CJ & Jim, do you guys have Autocad? I could just shoot you a dwg when it's drawn up. Or I could also export it to a DXF or somthing too...
Jester323 03-11-2008, 12:27 AM Okay, I measured it & drew it up in CAD, I really hate dimensioning, so I hope you have Autocad. Here are some images of what I have:

And the object that I took it from:

Jester323 03-11-2008, 12:47 AM Okay, I even broke down and dimensioned one just in case...

myersport 03-11-2008, 07:11 AM CJ-
See the edited length measurements in my previous post, using somewhat more accurate measuring tools. Angles are still approximate, however. These are measurements of the inset, as well, not including the raised lip, so the plaque will sit as in the Alpina photo posted.

blitzed310 03-11-2008, 10:15 AM Thanks guys. Jesse that is way more involved than needs to be, crazy engineer's :rofl The plaque is just going to be a simple flat stock piece of aluminum since Jim can not do any manufacturing for tabs and "boxing" it in.
I also have Matt working on some designs on what the plaque will look like so I'll post those up as well. If anyone has any ideas please feel free to post them up. I don't think we will put this to a vote, it will just be a general consensus thing for now. Keep in mind this is what Jim does for a living so if you are just not feeling the design contact him through PM and he can make you one of your choice. I just figured it would be cool to have a uniform plaque on our dashes representing our community.
BoostedE21 03-11-2008, 10:22 AM It maybe cause its the morning and just woke up, but what is this for? What is it going to say? I confused.
jimdemonic 03-11-2008, 10:38 AM  When this is all said and done I just need the exact measurements. so CJ you know where to find me.

That's why I only dimensioned the parts that Jim would need to be concerned with. But if I was spending time measuring and drawing then I was going to do it all, just in case I ever have to replicate that part some day. The face dimensions are pretty accurate, including the radial dimensions for the curved portions.
Cerpin TaxT 03-11-2008, 11:09 AM CJ, I'll work on the design when in P-Chop if I get a chance this evening. Sorry I couldn't work on it, due to the great spark plug and VW coil pack disaster of 2008. :D
AlaskaBimmer 03-12-2008, 03:39 AM Nice my 323 Baur already has a plaque in that spot that says custom built for Dave Olsen....I kinda want to leave it there since Dave was well known (he passed away in the mid 90s) in Anchorage and was a bigger BMW nut than I am. I get stopped and stalked all the time and get told another Dave story involving the Baur, 90 mph on a 2 lane road passing on a double yellow line with a bus and a moose and not getting killed or spinning out on a runway at 100,....and other stories about only getting in the car with him if they drove. anyway I guess I'd have to find a different spot for another plaque lol.

In the 1.8 t, You have to replace the coil packs they can go bad. :mad
I would like to see what designs you have, and I dont have a message center on my early dash. But, I would like an e21 legion plaque.
