So, few days ago my 99 528i threw ABS/ASC lights on the dash.
Unlike other e39 owners have complainted, my speedo & odo are working properly, which believes to be one of the front speed sensor (abs pulse generator) or the ABS module could be the cause of this type of symptom.

Many of e39 owners have experienced this failure and was advised to have my car read with the peak code reader, instead of playing the guess game.

I was wondering if anyone here has a peak code reader who can pull the codes out of my car. I've heard AutoZone can do it for free, do you know any other place where offers the free code reader? I'm located in Seattle.

Please let me know, thanks in advance!

Autozone and Schucks will read the OBDII code from the car, which may or may not turn up what a Peake code reader will. If you own a BMW, you need a Peake reader. I need to follow my own advice and pick one up....

I can't speak for the E39 but I had the same problem on my E36 M3 and it turned out to be the Brake Pedal Position Sensor. It was a pretty easy fix and the new sensor was approx $115.

Also, I didn't think the Peake tools could read ABS or ASC faults (only engine codes and air bags). Again, not sure if that is true for the E39.

Peake reader can read all chasis codes with exception to SRS.

Peake reader can read all chasis codes with exception to SRS.

That's actually not true. The Peake only reads and resets engine diagnostic codes, check engine lights, oilservice and inspection. If you want to read/diagnose an ABS or ASC (DSC for newer cars) you have to have the dealership or a well equipped private repair shop read the code (the exact tool they use is on the forum somewhere...I forget what it's called but it's very expensive).

And, you certainly can read SRS codes with a Peake tool. You just have to buy it separately from the Engine Code reader.

Anyway, good luck with the repair. Mine cost just over a hundred bucks and took all of 20 minutes to complete. Hopefully yours will go just as smoothly.

Thanks man!
I don't believe my ABS module is bad, since ABS/ASC lights have been flickering due to different environment/conditions. Hopefully just a dirty sensor.

I think you were referring to GT1 scanner, which will point directly to the defective/malfunctioning part.
