I had these on my XR4ti, I know they are good for heat extraction, since they are made of aluminum they could be flush mounted and welded into the hood, I am looking at installing them in my hood maybe when I repaint the whole car.
Please chime in, I know about the water issues but I know that under hood temps were better than before when the car did not have them installed.

The original Cosworth hood louvers were injection molded from a high temperature tolerant resin. Replica louvers made with fiberglass and ABS materials are not compatible with these high temperatures and will not hold their shape. Rapido has chosen to create replica Cosworth RS louvers in cast aluminum. These do not distort from the extreme heat conditions and they may be painted to match your vehicle color, or polished to a chrome like luster. Provided with mounting instructions and hardware.

IMO if you were gonna go the quick add-on route and blend in, THESE (http://www.raceace.com/products.html) could be a candidate. I'm talking to these guys to emulate the actual Alpina layout. I even like the Alpina side vents but feel it might be a bit much.....

i don't know, friends.
to me cutting holes into the hood seems a bit scary.
i know you all just drive your cars in sunshine.
but what if... (the unspeakable) happens????
there's a lot of electronics under that hood

ALL of the electronics are contained in gasketed plastic boxes. Sounds a bit like Chicken Little calling...
The Alpina hood louvers are located such that water infiltration into the engine compartment is not critical. The center inlet is also in a non-critical area. The Alpina hood center duct sits right above an oval opening in the acoustic engine cover, which in turn leads to the center of the engine (also technically sealed from water infiltration). As long as you put the louvers and the duct in the same location as Alpina did, you should have no problem. I think the kind folks (engineers) at both BMW and Alpina spent alot of time AND money figuring out how to make this work - you guys are thinking way too hard about this.

Nothing to worry about on where the louvers are anyway-not like the engine bay is sealed or anything.
If it had been a problem with the Alpinas, someone probably would have mentioned it by now...
