View Full Version : My feelings towards quad tips on E38s
mojocoggo 03-05-2008, 05:12 PM All of the setups I've seen just don't look quite right. I've thought this way ever since I first saw quads on an E38. The tail lights set up the flow of the rear, and make the path for where an exposed exhaust should be.

burn740i 03-05-2008, 05:19 PM I think that would look a little better, but that would require moving the mufflers, probably why most people don't do it.
theysellcoke 03-05-2008, 05:29 PM I agree with you mojo, where you you have highlighted, to me would me more aesthetically pleasing, but moving the mufflers would be a pain in the rear.
TSC.
board57796 03-05-2008, 05:31 PM I see what you mean, but I also see that the way most people currently have it does technically fit inside the lines you drew. I agree that the main reason most people probably don't do it is the more-than-necessary retrofitting necesarry to fit them in that position.

Like that?
phatfarm 03-05-2008, 05:40 PM I'm not trying to be defensive, but its interesting how you arbitrarily draw the outer lines (they're not even parallel with the inner ones).
BTW try it on an E39 M5 and see if your methodology works.
eddieb022000 03-05-2008, 06:13 PM on a large car like the 7 i think it looks silly to have them closer together... that would work on a 3 series but i like the quads on the board i have seen... i want to do it but just cant bring myself to replace perfectly good (expensive stock) mufflers, and even if i could move them closer together i wouldnt...
Cashmere740IL 03-05-2008, 08:09 PM I like mine...but I'm not doing an exhaust mod when I get my 01 Friday.
dophineh 03-05-2008, 11:41 PM I agree with mojo
manithemoneyman 03-05-2008, 11:56 PM hmm very interesting.
I think its more complicated than that though, the rear bumpers on the E38 have a flat even lip at the back which makes it an awkward placement for the tips no matter where you put them.
Some of the best looking exhausts I've seen take into account the color, wheels, stance, spoiler, etc of the car to really figure out the best place to put the tips.
Here's some pics of my favorites:

Jayccel 03-06-2008, 12:17 AM I'll be curious to see how yours turn out, with them sitting close(r) together, if you decide to do the mod. Mine look just right, where they are, imo. Wouldn't want them any closer to one another.

The lines weren't meant to be parallel; the taillights widen towards the bottom, so my lines do the same.

Exactly!
The satin black E38 with oval tips is my favourite I've seen so far. Those are the mufflers I plan to get someday.
There is a case for the tips being far apart as well. The car itself is pretty wide, and and the far-apart tips act in a similar way as clearance lights do on semi trucks. They define the outer edge of the vehicle (somewhat).
I've just had the idea all bundled up in my head for a while and wanted to get some thoughts on it. Thanks for your input so far!
Jayccel 03-06-2008, 01:13 AM Hey I love mine, but I always like to see new/different mods to the 7. Get 'er done mojo, and share some pics with us :)

+1
Cashmere740IL 03-06-2008, 07:56 AM I love those wheels on the red 7....they are the 21" wheels from the 760li right? I think I might get those.

I agree, that one looks amazing, what kind of exhaust system is that? And how much is the total cost to install these? (Both independent installment cost or professional installment costs) I think someone should put up a thread that discusses the vast variety of different exhaust systems people put on their e38s and show the costs that were involved, it would help a lot of new people that are interested in doing this mod.
Lexicon740il 03-06-2008, 02:25 PM IMHO,
There rear of the E38 would look ridiculous if they were closer together.
Yeah it looks great on a E39 M5....Well an E38 is not an E39

haha, it is pretty damn sexy :ogen
closer together is more unique. Would you have to realign the pipes though, this making it a big job?
Alpina740 03-06-2008, 05:07 PM Yea that Imola and flat black are 100% nasty. If that flat black had some flat black rims on it, i think it would be complete. Love the way the 21" rims look on the E38 though, sharp.
MeanMachine 03-06-2008, 08:05 PM I'd do whatever makes my car NOM NOM NOM .....favorite pichttp://i110.photobucket.com/albums/n89/mojocoggo/my_e38/e38omnom.jpg

I agree with you. It would look better if the tips were inset more. But the way the stock system is currently setup, that would be probably more work than its worth to get it to line up in the slant. Oh well. Just having quad tips on the 7 is hot enough as it is so no complaints here.

TxDarth 03-14-2008, 11:23 AM ..that is one reason I went from the notched OEM to this...
m5james 03-14-2008, 12:13 PM Well were not all cool enough to have ordered the M7 bumpers yet ;) How are the tweaks coming out? I'm waiting for the final, perfected version before I order.

Not really sure where he is going with this now....he posted an update last week here on the board. He thought his source had skipped the country for a while but I think he returned from the Philippines, I think

Take my advice and it will....oh wait, ya did ;) Car running better since you finally swapped the 02's and reset the computer - cause you did reset the computer like I told ya too, right?!:D
740ibimmer 03-17-2008, 02:54 AM Where'd you pick up your M bumpers then?
had a good friend of mine make it. took him some time. but it came out nice. he did stuff like this all the time in his shop. anyways he is no-longer with us.
but shifty is for talkers not doers. these cars are cheap. especially if you know how i get them. only one person knows my info. and he aint telling. shifty my ass.
m5james 03-17-2008, 12:49 PM Sorry to hear it bro. Yeah, sadly these cars are cheap...hence the amount of 17yr olds coming to the board asking the same things we've already discussed, trying to pimp in out like a Honda, etc. Hey, it's a 63k stickered car that I bought mine for 18k, it's got 11k into the motor, 3k into the diff, mods, etc...i'm gonna be keeping it for a long time.
Bruse Wayne 03-17-2008, 02:00 PM damn I need quads on the 7
