This was due to my leak out of the level sensor at btm. of tank on my E38 /1997 .Float & guide had broken loose so making aHOLE THROUGH THE PLASTIC WALL INTO THE SENSOR HOUSEING WHICH IS NORMALY DRY .
Fixed as per "e38.org
