hi all

I have just bought a bmw 520i (1991) model -leather interior and a metallic green colour

I have noticed a couple of things though -when in neutral the car revs ever so slightly from 1 -1.25 on the rev counter eg when at traffic lights

also it is quite hard to put the car into reverse -could this be that it is a little stiff due to being at a dealers last few months

Finally -I have a couple of scracthes on the paint work nothing severe at all- I went to my local garage and he said 2 options

either spray the panels -ie the door completely or touch it up with a brush -the scratches are very slight but I prefer not to have them -surely a brush job would be terrible -he is going to charge €24 for this? compared to 200 for spraying the door?

thanks in advance

reverse was always a mission for me to learn in my car... it should move easily to the position below 1st, then to push furhter to the left you have to push a little harder, then up......

idle... well usually (generally speaking, not necessarily applicable on the bmw) there are a few things to look for that can solve idle issues
firstly look for any inlet leaks
secondly check mixture and static timing if applicable (also can the O2 sensor effect idle??)
thirdly check the idle valve works smoothly, if not clean and try again
like i say this is all previous car knowledge nad im not sure how accurate this is for your specific car

like i say, its only my approach, a more experienced poster may tell you exactly what to look for
slightly high idle, its not a major problem so i guess most garages would either not notice or ignore it.

yeah -its not really to big of a deal in terms of it being high revving- just literally slightly over the 1 mark - my first bmw I have bought as I really like the old 1991 shaped 520i

apart from that all is good

finally I dont suppose you know anything about the scratches- nothing major but im not sure Im convinced about the garage painting over the scratches

this may seem totally naive but why if they sprayed it they dont just spray over the scratch and not the complete panel -would it leave it looking patchy?

thanks again

A good detail shop, depending on the scratch depth, can fill em up looking like new. The older the car, the less likely theyll be able to match the paint
