View Full Version : Buying a E46 M3...
Alpine323is 03-04-2008, 10:16 PM I just wanted to find out from E46 M3 owners if I would be a punk for buying the E46 M3 with between 15 and 20k miles for 50 to 55k, especially with the release of the E92 M3 at 55 to 60k?
Which would be a good, or rather better buy. E46 M3 2006/07 w/ comp package, navi etc(which alot of them have from what Ive seen) or a stock E92 M3 ordered from the factory?
Thanks
obnoxious2 03-04-2008, 11:33 PM However you want to spend your money man. Depends if you want manual or SMG or M-DCT. If your looking for comfort and an somewhat auto shifter get the e92 m3 with M-DCT.
nick325xit 5spd 03-04-2008, 11:41 PM You'd be getting ass raped if you paid that price for an E46 M3.
thalilbear02 03-05-2008, 12:14 AM paying 50-55k for an e46, yeah you would be a chump buying that car for that price... I've seen great e46's for lower price, still low mileage (under 30k) for as low as 29k... paying 55k NO way... i would buy the e92 M3 with just alittle bit more money... although ive heard about a fuel pump failure... not sure if its a rumor or not... but definantly wait and order from the factory or get an 2004 M3 for 37K and save on mods
Modena NYC 03-05-2008, 12:55 AM The market is flooded with E46 M3s...Buy one for close to $30k or less, or you will be losing a lot of $ in the next 18mos.
$37k and I think you should get a NEW STI or 135. They are not the same car as an E46, but there is something to be said for buying something new...and $37k is a lot for a used car.
I bought M3 2003 with manual, full options 1 year ago and I paid around 30k.
Nothing problem yet. Great performance, no doubt.
I recommend that you should search more in your market. There are lots of M3 in market now.
New E92 M3's MSRP is $56,500. Add some options, then $65,000.
But it always depends on money.
Alpine323is 03-05-2008, 08:07 AM I just started researching yesterday. I wanted manual, with very low miles. I really didnt want to go over 20k. My biggest issue is wrinkled leather. I cant stand it, especially if I didnt wrinkle it.
Thanks for the repsonses

Dude. You can buy new seat covers for a lot less than $25,000.
ecrouse 03-05-2008, 11:52 AM I just bought a 2004 ///M3 convertible, SMG with 29K miles for $31,000 in January. There were several others I was looking at around the same mileage/year for under $35K.

good point. I'll Keep researching. Are dealerships infamous for markups on these M3's
99EmThree 03-05-2008, 04:40 PM You need my 05 E46...
No seriously go look in the classified for the 3 series on this forum and the prices out there are better than on the street and far better than a stealership.
31,300 miles and $36,800, is where mine is priced...it is immaculate inside and out and at a VERY fair price. I have even had comments about it being low on the forum. KBB has it right around $40K and there is no damn reason to be in the low 30s.
I have had lots of activity at this price here and on Craigslist, I am just being firm and I think other will as well.
Just my 2cents.
kellcats521 03-05-2008, 05:28 PM I bought an '04 M3 from an ATLANA 'stealership' last Oct. - CPO with 44K miles for $26,500.... Soooooo, $36.5K is toooooo high for a comperable '05, AND you'll definately get a better deal from a dealer than you will on this forum.....
Good Luck!!

For some odd reason, the E46 M3 market in Atlanta is not representative at all of the country, as a whole. I've seen some crazy steals down there, and I can never find anything close anywhere else. Your car is one of those!

Noooo, I think it is representative - the Atl economy I'll offer is as strong or STRONGER than ANY other city in the USA - we have no unemployment and basically zero recession effect that MOST of the USA is dealing with. What really is happening is that the E46 M3 values are falling, and owners (both folks on these forums and sellers with thier heads in the sand) are unwilling to deal with it.

Uh, no. It [the E46 M3] is not representative, because I'm using actual prices as indicators of this assertion, not some vague idea that you have about your area. The California market , for example, is particularly inflated. Most areas are somewhere in between these extremes. I'm not the first, by any means, to make this observation about either area.
I am perfectly willing to accept that values are falling. But, it can vary by region; and for whatever reason, the south (especially, from what I have seen, the Atlanta metro area) has the best deals right now.

Shamless plug:lol;) Price on the E46's going to drop very soon (about 2-4k) once the new M's come out.
Werewolf 03-05-2008, 07:52 PM I can vouch for the inflation in the SoCal market. I saw a cherry 2001 bmw with 60k miles for $23K in NY, same car in cali is easily 26K (private party)

Just bought my 2006 M3 for 47. Compared to other prices for 06 models here in Cali, I got a great deal (most are still above 50 for more milage than what I got). So yeah, it does depend on the region, year and whether you are willing to pay a little extra for a car still under the original factory warranty.
TheMossMan 03-07-2008, 11:56 AM If you're willing to spend $55k...I'd wait a year or so and reassess.
Paying anything north of $35k for an E46 M3 at this point could cause you to face an abnormally large depreciation.
GeorgeM3SMG 03-07-2008, 12:25 PM The Atlanta BMW market has nothing to do with the overall economic health of the area. It has to do with the tons of BMW's running around this town and the high rate of leasing by people who do buy BMW's in Atlanta. I agree that the pricing here is lower than the norm.
However, when it comes to a car like an M3, the cheapest car to buy is not always (if not often) not the cheapest car to own.
Alpine323is 03-12-2008, 01:07 PM thanks for the info guys. I will say being in NY things in general have a premium.
a big mac will cost you more in the city:confused
since im getting used i might aswell look out of state and drive back.
gravydog 03-13-2008, 12:12 AM Just did a PDI on a E92 M The MSRP sticker was 69k, and this wasnt even loaded.

the dealer across the street from me has a sedan and coupe, both alpine both loaded with every single option right down to HD radio. the sedan is 70k and the coupe is 69 and change. That fox red looks ridiculous. And combined with extended leather I was sold. The coupe doesnt have a cf roof though. they cant even charge extra for the moonroof, but all these dealers are optioning out anyway:confused
Needless to say the sedan in white with ext fox red and the 19" looks totally mad in person. I would actually get it over the coupe. And call me crazy but I think the seats in the sedan are bolstered a little higher in the sedan too, unless I gained like 10lbs since I sat in the coupe a week ago.
I think im going to pay the 1100 a month, screw it. Wish me luck guys, im going in....
