I picked up my 540 on the weekend and am just sorting out a few minor issues.
It came with a remote key, which I pulled apart and repaired, but the system still doesnt work. I followed the instructions in the manual to re initialize the alarm.
Ive checked under the seat and I have the module under (in front of) the fuse box.
The only thing is the manual says there is a infra red sensor in the mirror, however I pulled it apart and cant find a IR receiver anywhere.

Just wondering if anyone might be able to shed some light on the issue.
Ive done a lot of searching and found a lot of useful info that has got me to this point.
Can anyone show me a pic or describe an EC Mirror with alarm sensor (clown nose?), and without. That might help me work out which one I got.

thought those were RF, not IR.

learn something everyday. the remote has a little window to transmit IR?

Here in the US we didn't get EC mirrors in e34s.
if it is still a 3 wire connector, it doesn't have an ir reciever, that's for sure.

Are you sure its a remote key and not a key with the light?

Does the key fob look like this?

or is it a rectangular box with either 1 or 3 buttons on it?

If it's the first one, probably best to find a UK or AUS board to help you with troubleshooting, that alarm system was never used on US production cars.

Here's a pic of an EC mirror below with the clown nose (also has the compass feature, too). As already stated...the USA never got any models with an IR (infrared) clown nose mirror. In fact, IR was dropped as a keyless entry system after the 1991/1992 model years...and everything from that point up was/is RF (radio frequency). So you won't get much help from us Yanks basically because we are ignorant about IR keyless entry after 1991/92.

Clown nose is located (hidden) in the front centre air vent on the top of the dash in later models.
