How do I reset the check engine light - ?
What is the best scan tool to get to do this?
Thanks

The first thing is to find out WHY the light is on. Then if you fix that, the light will eventually go out by itself. Or, disconnect the battery for a few minutes and that will reset it. But if you haven't fixed the problem, it will come back on.

I just got this: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/BMW-interface-for-carsoft-6-5-obd1-obd2-obd-kits_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ43989QQihZ009QQite mZ190202288953QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWDVW

It works great, but buy it only from that seller, because I've heard of bad ones off of ebay.

It will tell you why it came on and you can reset it too so it goes out.

+1

You can reset it, but you still have whatever problem is making it come on in the first place.

The way the system works, if you fix the problem that caused the light to come on, the light will automatically go out once the computer realizes the problem is fixed. If you're light is on, chances are resetting it won't do you any good.

Lot's of BMW owners like the Peake tool.
http://peakeresearch.com/code_tool.htm

They have them in a few different flavors some do airbags some don't ect.

If you want something that reads other cars too. "96 and up"
Any OBD II scanner will work.
Theres a few good ones on amazon.
http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_ss_gw/002-2394712-2826466?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=obd+II&x=0&y=0

BTW, Autozone will scan and reset your code for you for free.
They also sell OBD II scanners.
