View Full Version : New to BMW--raspy sound--(I've searched already)

I just picked up an '05 M3--I'm brand new to the BMW community. I'm very happy with the performance so far, seeing as I just got rid of my Stage 2 STi. The subie was a great car, but the bimmer is by far and away the best car I've ever driven.

I've used the search function and I've read a number of threads discussing raspy sound from the exhaust.

I hear a similar sound on my car, but I'm not sure if it's the exact same sound being talked about. This sound sounds like it's coming somewhere from midpipe back and it's only noticeable at or above 4500rpm on rapid acceleration. Is this a normal sound from this engine or should I be concerned? Any advice is greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

What you are hearing is the infamous rasp. Perfectly normal.

Thanks for the input. I had hoped it was the rasp. Just happy nothing's wrong!

One of the reasons I love my car. No other sounds like it.

It's what happens when you put cats and a muffler on an F1 engine...

Indeed. It's nice and quiet at lower RPM's, which makes people think it's just a regular BMW, but loud and sounds like a beast at higher RPM's. No other car sounds like it and it's like pure sex.

M3's have the most schizophrenic exhaust on the market. They're raspy one second and mellow and refined in another. Bizarre, but endearing. At first I hated it, but eventually just accepted it as part of their unique character.

Very normal. I'm replacing my stock exhaust though, because i somehow broke the baffles in the rear exhaust box loose.. So now I'm thinking hte Diablo system :devillook... Good luck with your new Toy!! and congrads on moving up to a real car! haha just playing, all my friends have Subaru's and always wonder why I dont care about their cars.

Yeah, I somehow just did this in the cross section. Luckily it's still under warranty so my dealer is picking up the tab. :alright

Thanks. The subie was a fun car, but it doesn't even compare to the new toy! Adding mods might be a little more expensive on this though.....

I'd advise against doing any bolt ons, unless you have the money (exhaust/intake/headers/ etc), since most will net you little to no actual gain and only change the way the car sounds.

Just be like me and save up for horsepowerfreaks stage 1 turbo. :buttrock

HAHA.. Good words of inspiration!!! Unfortunately I'm just looking for a great sound for my car for now, just the muffler, it works out because my factory one is damaged, so I'm getting an after market noise box for free!! haha. :redspot have any suggestions?

Raspy or not, I got rid of it with an El Diablo exhaust and a rasp pipe. All bolt on....great sounding machine:redspot
