View Full Version : Decided: 335i coupe, need help getting price
NMOTIANI 03-02-2008, 09:25 PM Hi I need some help getting the right price for the 335i in Fairfield, CT.
I want a tit silver metalic 335i coupe with premium, cold weather, sport, and MT. MSRP is 45,875 I am ready to do the deal at 43, 500. If anyone has gotten the deal in the tri state area let me know please. Any dealers out here? I am ready if you can give me this price.
Thanks
Bonds 25 03-02-2008, 10:47 PM Good luck with that....its a $46,450 car...and your gonna have to order it because no dealer is gonna have a 335i coupe MT....Sedan and AT then maybe you could get that price.
JD 6SPEED 03-02-2008, 11:20 PM If its $46,450 you will be lucky to get it for $2k under MSRP. $44,500 is more like it.
NMOTIANI 03-02-2008, 11:36 PM There are def. no cars in the area and it will have to be ordered. There have to be some bmw dealers in the tri-state area willing to do the deal. Will let you know if I get close.
Corky71 03-02-2008, 11:45 PM Your better off dealing in terms of invoice cost and not MSRP. Figure out what the invoice is through Edmunds or somewhere similar and try to get it at no more than $1000 above. If you don't you're probably paying too much.
NMOTIANI 03-02-2008, 11:47 PM that is how I came up with that price it is about 1300 over invoice...
Corky71 03-02-2008, 11:52 PM Actually I forgot about training and maco fees (usually $450-$500 combined).....if it's $1300 over including that then it's not so bad.
Bonds 25 03-03-2008, 12:15 AM Pretty much not gonna happen on a ordered 335 coupe MT....most likely you will not get a deal
Corky71 03-03-2008, 01:46 AM Pretty much not gonna happen on a ordered 335 coupe MT....most likely you will not get a deal
Why not? That's how I got mine.
ra2fanatic 03-03-2008, 02:01 AM gl on that deal, just like everyone said, prollie gonna hav to order it, many dealers dont carry MT
NMOTIANI 03-03-2008, 02:01 AM Corky if you can recommend a dealer please do. BMW salespeople are great till you start discussing price. They seem to get offended when you expect to get a low price on a BMW.
NMOTIANI 03-03-2008, 02:04 AM ra2fanatic, that is affirmative. There are currently NO cars with my spec mainly cause of the MT. The worst part is this will be my first MT car, my 3rd drive of a MT was Saturday at the dealership :)
Bonds 25 03-03-2008, 02:11 AM Im not saying it WONT happen. Im saying MOST LIKELY it wont happen. People who order 335 Coupe MT never seem to get deals that AT or sedans get. Thats just the way it is. Maybe things have changed since I ordered mine (Sept 07). I went to 4 different dealers, and not one of them had a coupe, let alone a MT.
ra2fanatic 03-03-2008, 03:00 AM i just placed my order for a AW/coral red MT 335i. i'm excited to drive that beast wen it gets here. the dealership i went to check out the 335i didn't even carry a single MT 335. w/ the luck there, there was only 1 montego blue there also (intended to get montego blue btw)
i actually got $3750 off msrp cuz i'm in the military

I think your best bet is to find the 3 or so closest dealers to you and email them saying you want an online quote, that's what I did. Within 1 day I was armed with 3 good quotes already and played them against each other right from my computer desk. They know that your looking for the best deal if your looking for an online quote so the offers are pretty strong right off the bat, at least they were for me. I'm not sure how far you want to travel but i'm pretty sure you can get a similar deal from the dealer I went too.

I'm not sure we are talking about the same thing here. If you're saying they won't have a coupe i'd say you're probably right. They didn't have one for me either but the OP knows he'll have to order it. If you're saying you can't get a good deal ordering a MT coupe I don't agree with that at all. It doesn't affect them in the least ordering an auto or a MT, sedan or coupe, if they know they already have a buyer for it they'll order it for the same markup. I know i'm not the only one who gas gotten a good deal on the MT coupe.
StephenNg 03-03-2008, 12:54 PM I believe the dealer will be least willing to deal on the price if it is a MT simply because if you ever back out the deal and they would need to keep the MT that most don't move as easy as a AT. To them there is a certain "risk"; therefore, there will be some kind of risk factor they will build in to the price.

sorry that doesn't make any sense. If you back out of the deal how is them building a "risk" factor into the negotiated price matter? you simply backed out and are not paying anything. If you end up buying it, then no need for a "risk" factor. If anything, them giving you a good deal is more of a guarantee you won't back out. In short, I this logic doesn't add up and I don't believe an MT would prevent you from negotiating a good deal.
Jhunter 03-03-2008, 01:46 PM As for the risk, I think he is just referring to the dealer having a MT car on the lot instead of an AT which appeals to a wider market. Although I don't see this as that big a factor in pricing.
The price just comes down to the dealer's allocation and how much they think they can get out of each car they sell. When I bought my 335 coupe over a year ago, dealer's were not allocated very many and there was a strong demand, therefore, they made sure they made a nice margin on each one they could get. That is why the coupe discounts were less than the sedans (bigger allocation, less demand). I don't know if this is still the case today but this is the biggest factor in determining the discount.
TeaRoy 03-03-2008, 01:48 PM I would email/fax every dealer around you that isn't so far away that you're not willing to work with them. Tell them the exact options you want and the exact price you want to pay. One of them may jump - they may not - but give them a yes or no option.

That was my problem. The 335i coupes were going for more than MSRP in this area - so dealers weren't willing to take less off of their allocated cars. They knew they could sell them at MSRP (or near it).

Yeah, unfortunately you can't beat market supply and demand rules, but you can always shop elsewhere (other cities/states) and usually supply/demands is location and dealer dependent.

I think some are still missing the point. The OP already knows he has to order it so the wait isn't a problem. He could get just as good a deal on a MT coupe this way anyway.

Maybe I am missing something.
My understanding is that the dealers get a certain number of cars delivered to them in a certain time frame (their allocation). They can modify accessories but not the 'type' of car (335 vs 328 / coupe vs sedan). For example, If they are getting ten 335i coupes in the next 3 months and they know they can sell all of them for MSRP, then they will not give you a deal on the price. They have no reason to sell them for less. If they do...they are forcing the people who WILL pay MSRP to wait that much longer (for the next allocation). What am I missing?:help

You are missing the fact that you can go to the dealer and say "I don't want any of the cars on your lot, please order me one". :)

That's exactly what I did - but they can't just order one whenever the heck they want. They get an allocation of a certain number of cars and that's it. They can't order 200 335i coupes in one month even if they have 500 requests (at least I don't think so). They only get so many...period. They can 'customize' to your specific preferences (like your order) - but they can't go over a certain amount of each type of car in a certain period. In other words - your 'order' comes off of their allocation of cars. So if there are 500 'orders' for a 335i coupe in a month, and their allocation is 200....they will sell those 200 cars to the folks who are willing to pay what they want.
Maybe I've got this all wrong.

True, but that is usually a rare case unless the car is brand new and in high demand (e.g M3 during 1st year or so of production). To clarify, until the a car in their allocation is built, they can always change the specs to meet yours (with BMW they can even do that while the car is being built depending on what stage of production it is in and what you want to change). So unless all their allocation is already spoken for, they will be more than willing to change a car they have spec-ed for their showroom to something they have good confidence you will buy when it arrives.

Right. Thanks. When I ordered my 335, the wait around here was forever because the current allocation (orders) was all spoken for. So, the dealers weren't willing to budge much on price. Obviously you can order whatever you want if the wait time doesn't bother you.
And to the point of the original thread...to get that kind of deal off MSRP on the car you want...you have to find a dealer who can't move their current allocation for a higher price.
NMOTIANI 03-03-2008, 06:55 PM I have a bite for 43925, I need to iron out the details....
FYI money factor is down this month and multiple security deposits (7) will bring you down to .00181. I should be able to pull of the lease for about 600 or so.
NMOTIANI 03-03-2008, 06:55 PM 36 month, 12k miles 0 down that is
Bonds 25 03-03-2008, 07:12 PM Does not work that way brother, dealers can only order so many vehicles. I had to wait for a couple months till they started building xi coupes MT. I had to put down a deposit to lock up the 1st spot in the order line at the dealer. And it is a fact that 99% of the time you order a car you GET NO DEAL, especially on a car that is rare (MT) and in high demand (Coupe). I know this was the case when I ordered mine in Sept. But the best of luck
mryakan 03-03-2008, 07:45 PM And it is a fact that 99% of the time you order a car you GET NO DEAL, especially on a car that is rare (MT) and in high demand (Coupe).
What are you basing your "facts" on? I can say got a deal a 100% of the time I custom ordered a BMW, that is both times, which doesn't hold much weight statistically speaking. Anyway, many people report getting good deals on custom orders. In the end, it is all about supply and demand combined with negotiation skill and tolerance for bickering with a salesman.
marc1119 03-03-2008, 07:59 PM I ordered a 335I from the factory 6 weeks ago..I got $2600 off sticker without even asking...Plus FREE floormats...
The first I dealer I went to .offered $2700 off sticker plus FREE floormats..
I got a better ACV for my 5 series trade-in at the $2600 discount dealership..
So I bought it there ..Tulley BMW , Nashua NH
Car comes off the boat tomorrow..in NY, I should have it in about a week...
Short story..I went to 2 dealers..$47600 sticker price 335I, Special order, and I got a $2600 and $2700 discount..plus FREE floormats ($140 value) at each place..I think discounting on this car may be commonplace..at least for me..
Bonds 25 03-03-2008, 08:48 PM Well it seems as though 1. Im retarded 2. I ordered all my cars at the wrong time. Ive special ordered 4 cars in my life and not once did I get any kind of a deal. I would bet my savings account that anybody who ordered a 08 335i or xi MT coupe in sept-nov did not get any kind of a deal. Congrats to all who did, the money I would of saved by waiting would of ended up being spent on booze and hookers anyways
Beer Goggles 03-03-2008, 09:37 PM If you order a car when it's new and in demand you won't get a deal. Even though the 335 is still a popular car I think it's died down where they will deal a little more on the coupes.
Also to the guy wanting to put 7 MSDs down..why loan them $4200 to get a little off the lease? I don't get that logic, but if you feel that it works for you...it works for you.
I paid sticker because I'm so money I don't need a deal....or MT Coupes are so rare they don't have to :) Either one works.
chaz13 03-03-2008, 09:47 PM I just got a quote on a new 335i coupe to be built for me. The MSRP was 45895 and I got him down to 44000 even. Is this a good deal or no. I was told most of the time they only discount these cars 800-900 bucks. Anyone with any experience buying this type of car your help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks a lot.
GreenThree 03-03-2008, 10:12 PM The dealer actually suggested that I order my car just the way I wanted it. Ordered and got $2000 off sticker and free floor mats :)
This kills the myth that you can only get good deals from something on the lot.
I understand that the demand may be a little differnt for the 328 v the 335 but still.
mryakan 03-03-2008, 10:39 PM There is nothing wrong with people who pay sticker or close to, there are various reasons for that whether it is market conditions or just their unwillingness or not caring to wheel and deal, doesn't make them less smart. How many people pay 10$ for a 2$ drink? Also if it weren't for those guys the rest may not get such good deals, so all in all it doesn't matter what you paid, you have one heck of a car, so enjoy it.
NMOTIANI 03-03-2008, 11:13 PM Beer goggles ... you must be money... Lending them money makes you money at no risk. Buying down the money factor by lending them money essentially yields a return of 1200 on the 4500 in three years... I am sure you hedge fund does better for you.
TeaRoy 03-04-2008, 01:13 PM Well it seems as though 1. Im retarded 2. I ordered all my cars at the wrong time. Ive special ordered 4 cars in my life and not once did I get any kind of a deal. That was my situation - I was too impatient to wait, and at the time I ordered my '08 335i coupe - late last summer - they weren't dealing b/c the demand was there. Now, I'm sure they are. But I've had my '08 since October - and I'd pay a bit more to have those past 4 months. It's all supply, demand, and as mryakan said - your willingness to haggle with salesreps.

Sounds like a good deal to me. Plus the car's awesome...so that makes it a great deal.:D
chaz13 03-04-2008, 04:02 PM Thanks for the response. I currently have an Audi A4 2005.5 2.0 AWD. It was the brand new body style when I bought it in July of 05'. I was able to get one custom built for 2% over invoice, which I thought was a really good deal. It's the same dealership as the BMW so I asked for the same deal at 2% over invoice. I was told no can do. I like the salesman, he is an honest guy. He said this car at 44k even is a really good deal. He said that is better than most deals they give and it is also being built not taken off the lot. I was just curious if this was a good deal. I love the car. I was all set to get a 135i until I saw the horrible lease rates. The 335i is more expensive by several thousand yet the lease is cheaper. And I like the 335 even better than the 135. I think I may pull the trigger by the end of the week.
NMOTIANI 03-05-2008, 01:27 AM ORDERED!!!!
I finally pulled the trigger. ETA is 6 weeks.
Chaz, 44k is a good price, I was able to get the deal at 439XX just by soliciting bids through edmunds with a strike price of 43,500. I took the lowest offer at 439XX.
LuvMyE92 03-05-2008, 01:49 PM the money I would of saved by waiting would of ended being spent on booze and hookers anyways
:) I like your sense of humor Bonds.
For you guys asking "am I getting a good deal" the answer is...
maybe. Depends on how much you really want to save money. In your area, that may be a good price. In another area of the country, it's a steal, in another, you're getting robbed. Check with other dealers in your area. If you are willing to travel, you can almost surely do better, but then you've got to consider airfair, gas driving back, etc. Have a trade-in complicates the deal though. If you can sell your existing car yourself or just wholesale it through CarMax or your local Audi dealer, it makes it easier to compare prices. I got quotes from 3 dealers and luckily for me my local dealer was the cheapest. The price range that I got surprised me though, so it's worth the effort. I might otherwise have fallen for that "these cars are awfully rare" line. Which, BTW, is BS these days. If it wasn't, they wouldn't be offering 3.9% financing.
HTH,
Michael
