Last night I was laying in bed dreaming about my lovely 8 when I suddenly woke and relised I had been looking in the wrong place for ABS ASC fault.

About two weeks ago I had removed the Module from the drivers door seal area and it all looked ok, so put it all back together and have been looking elsewere for the fault. Then last night I relised you guys drive on the other side of the car from me in the UK, so this morning I stripped out the passanger footwell and found the ASB ASC module. What a wally for not realising befor.

Anyway all looked well and everything was dry but as I unpluged the module a hole lot of water ran out of the connector and the pins on the module and plug were covered in corrotion.

And when I cleaned it all up one of the pins was completly missing.

So I removed the cover from module and all was clean and dry so I soldered a wire onto the back of the missing pin and out through the side of the cover.

And connected the wire into the wiring loom just befor the plug and all is working again.

Now just got to work out how the water had gotten into the plug. There was no sign of damp anywere else.

water spillage perhaps?

exactly where did you find this, 'cos I'm looking for the LKM and don't know where it is!

cheers

Whats an LKM? and it was under the carpet along the passanger door seal in the footwell area.

Whats an LKM? and it was under the carpet along the passanger door seal in the footwell area. The LKM is under the dash below the steering wheel..

look to the side (don't know if left or right for you English guys) of the steering column, there should be 3 black boxes stacked on top of one another. I believe the LKM is the one in the middle. It will take a bit of wiggling, but it is somewhat accessible.

BMW did as little change as possible to build the right handers so the three computers should be under the dash on the offside. Below the glove boxes on your car. There should be a bottom closure panel that they are behind and above it.

great, hopefully that'll make it more accessible

Luke, this is exactly what happened to me !!

since I am a new member here I cant seem to post pics, but I have a pic that looks identical to your ecu module, with corroded/missing pins.

I wasn't so clever as to actually fix the module, but I did get lucky and find a replacement from a breakers for £100

My bet is a split can of corrosive fizzy drink, probably falling from the rubbish cup holders in the glovebox.

Hi Tony, you could be right on the fizzy drink idea and glad you also managed to sort out your car. I couldnt just replace the module as the corasponding terminal on the plug was also corroded away.

You need to have a post count of 15 befor you are allowed to post pics on this forum so get posting.

Were abouts in the UK are you?

Best regards Luke.

will I get flamed if I just post whore for a another 12 posts ?? lol

Boy have I got some decent e31 pics to post in here !

Re the ABS ecu, when I bought the unit from the breakers I got him to sell me the connector with about 30cm of wiring loom. Then reconnected all the wires and this cured everything.

I do have a sticking ABS pump motor, and am about to disassemble that to try and eek out a bit more life from that, before replacing with athe new pump unit (on my shelf).

I'm in NW england, near Blackpool btw. (disallowed smiley!!)

Are you talking about the tandem vane pump mounted to the engine, or the hydro unit directly below the brake master cylinder? The Hydro unit contains extremely high pressure gas and is quite dangerous to be fiddling with. The tandem vane pump on the other hand can be rebuilt quite easily. I just had mine done locally for about $125.

it's the motor on the ABS hydro unit, left front wheel arch, under the headlight (part number 0 265 217 000). UK SPEC 840ci SPort 1997.

It's been done on a friends car last week and it cured his problem.

There was no mention of high pressure gas though. Can you shed any light on this ?

Cheers
Tony

The high pressure gas is in the brake bomb and not the ABS Hydro pump unit.

wrong, the unit I am refering to is the ASC Hydro unit underneath the brake booster. Some folks call it the ABS and some the ASC pump. This unit has extremely high pressure gas in it (at least that is what the big yellow warning sticker says on it). The ABS unit that you are refering to is located above the brake bomb.

OK, are we talking about the same thing here? When I can post pics I'll be able to show you exactly what I mean. The ABS 'Pump' is under the left front headlamp (driverside US). There is a small electric motor attached to the block which feeds the ABS hydraulics. Nowhere on this unit is high pressure gas mentioned. I've never heard of this in association with an ABS Pump, and plus it (the refurbishment) has been done successfully before. I think we have some wired crossed somewhere !

that said, my car is a 1997 840 Sport. And has a later version of ABS that your model, probably explains a lot :- )

TxGR8White

that would be correct. I think 1994 was the transition from unit under the master cylinder to unit in front of the left wheel well...
