View Full Version : Chatterbox/IMSA/NASCAR Compatibility
jblack 02-29-2008, 05:50 PM So - when instructing, like most others I know, I use a Chatterbox with (what I will call) a DIN 8 connector on it. The racing radio I am ready to order is available in IMSA (preferred, as I understand) or NASCAR plugs, which look like old fashion phono jacks.
Anyone know how to make these all play nice in my helmet? I was looking for a DIN to phono adapter, but I am coming up empty on that.
I already have the Chatterbox, so an option that involves replacing that part of the equation is not optimal for me.
If no solution presents itself, I guess I can stick with shoving the boom chatterbox headset in there, but if I am already wired for sound, I'd like to have these two systems play together....
Thanks!
FierySphere 02-29-2008, 11:55 PM I know where you're coming from.
I went thru the same thought process last year. In the end I decided to just stuff the 'Instructor' kit in the helmet along with the pro radio setup.
I felt that using my molded earpieces would reduce the noise to an unacceptably low level. Good in a race car, not so good in a quite student car. Some of those noises are *important*

That's what I have done as well. They don't really interfere much with one another, as I have the foam ear plugs for the IMSA set up and the regular headphones for the Chatterbox. The microphones both fit fine without any interference as well.
jblack 03-01-2008, 09:08 PM Glad to hear (pun intended) that I am not the first to think of this. And the points of different hearing is important in racing vs. instructing are good. Still, I think we can make a million dollars (or at least 40 bucks) making a compatible system for both, as it does not seem to exist.
Thanks for the responses, guys. I will do what you guys are too.

BAURized 03-01-2008, 10:55 PM As a student with 21 more track days planned for this year, I would like to install a headset into my helmet that is compatible with most NASA instructors chatterboxes. Which setup do you recommend? Chatterbox model #?
Or, am I just wasting my time?:help
325racer 03-02-2008, 01:33 PM My parents back east have done exactly this. Dad made an adapter to go from Chatterbox to Nascar connector. I tried to make one in a rush a few weeks back, but must have crossed a wire or something.
They have the ChatterBox stuff in the helmet and just an adapter, they say it works great.

Any pin-outs/wiring info you can supply would be great - sounds like exactly what I was looking for!

I'll tell you I use the CB50, which seems pretty common with those that have purchased in the last few years. That means you are looking for the CB50 FFHS. It is the one with the DIN connector.

This might help answer questions.

thejlevie 03-02-2008, 06:27 PM In my opinion, the best connector is a mini-XLR. It is easy to connect, reliable, and locks in place. It isn't difficult to come up with adapters from a mini-XLR to Chatterbox DIN or anything else, but it probably won't be an off-the-shelf item.

Thanks for the input (from everyone)... I think I'll go with the CB50 as it seems to be the one I see most often. I'll just recess it a bit so if needed, I can still fit the instructors ear / mic piece over it in case the jack doesn't match what he/she is using.
