Day before Easter Sunday.

Ononline registration will open at 12:01 am this Saturday, March 1st (that's this this Sat as of this posting). Click on SD Chap Online Registration Auto-x (http://sdbmwcca.motorsportreg.com) to reserve your spot in advance. We’ll hold 10 openings for the first non-BMWs and increase our total registration to 100 drivers since Daylight Savings Time will be in place by then.

Another reminder: when you register online, you STILL need to show up before 7:30 to claim your spot. We have plenty of people who arrive on the event day hoping to get in, and to maximize driver openings, we may offer them your spot if you’re a no-show at 7:30. Late arrivals swamp our Tech and Registration volunteers all at the same time and hold up our 8:30 Driver’s Meeting, so please help us out and arrive by 7:30. Getting 1100 runs in (100 drivers X 11 runs) is hard to do unless we all work together to achieve it.

LSD has nothing to do with handling. It has all to do with how early and how much power you can put down in a turn.

minimizing wheelspin on a corner exit isn't a handling improvement?:rolleyes

I guess to me it's not. But then again I just realized you don't have an M3, so you're adding one which would help you a great deal in the turns.

Handling is more of suspension and it's geometry and tire/wheel size/width.

Not arguing just my point of view. I actually had my LSD go bad and replaced it with a rebuilt one from Metric Mechanic but instead of 2-discs, I made it a 3-disc variable LSD (same stock gear ration 3:25).

Not really, its more of a power application to the ground. Handling would be more suspension based. Body roll, turn in, nose dive (when braking). The LSD will make a difference with the rear end, the question is...will you be ready for the change? :D

Um, you need 7 quarts. Not sure about E46s, but my 328 takes 6.9 quarts. You'll want to top it off with the whole 7 quarts before the auto-x.

My diff fluid was very very low. I bought it thinking that it had full fluid, so I had it installed but Johnny didn't bother to check the fluid levels. Essentially, the gear oil inside got cooked and I was left on the side of the road with a steaming car. I thought that shit was gonna catch on fire lol. I ended up getting a flatbed tow with some black guy with dreads... truck smelled like weed. Saw a GT3 and Kyle in his M coupe pass by while I was in the tow truck :( Damn, I bled money out the ass today.

I got it all fixed up with my stock diff back in there... also got my clutch/flywheel done while I was at it. If you guys ever need work done, Lael Automotive in Oceanside is excellent. The owner, Lael, is very knowledgeable about BMWs. I highly recommend his shop. People who know what they're doing are hard to come by.

Good seeing you Albert (shinobi). Yeah that "Bunny" course was fast. In my M-Stock M3 (literally bone-stock), I hit 3rd gear, 3 and even 4 times!!! Very fast, fast course! I got 2nd in Gold class but hey there were only 3 people, but I was competing against my co-driver Brian Moon and he got me by .500! 103.014 vs 103.588. Not close enough for even M-Stock but there was one fast 2007 Z4-M Coupe today.

Great day today.

White Knuckles
03-25-2008, 02:29 AM
I got 14 or 15 runs total. 8 practice runs and 5 or 6 timed runs as I got a few re-runs because the timing system was having some issues. I think Dan Tackett said the course was 1.25 mile. It was more like a road course (which I like) except for a few tight 90 degree turns and no slalom. Over all I thought It was a fun course with all the off-camber turns and a long left sweeper heading down hill. I remember one course last year on the West lot that was 1.6 mile long. That was a ton of fun. I can't wait till the 2-day auto-x, when we get to run consecutive laps on the second day.

I think My best run in my beat down E30 was a 105.4. But I ran a 104.5 one time and they gave me a re-run on that one ( I missed a down shift on that run, so maybe the clock was f'ed up). And I was ony running Falken Azenis 195/60r14 and no camber plates. I might have a hook-up on Toyo's, so I might run some RA1's or R888's next time out.:buttrock Oh, and I got about 1/2 way there and relized I forgot my camera...damn you, hang over.

I think what you mean is power sliding.

Drifting would be if you initiate the slide before the apex.

Power sliding, from what it seemed like you were doing, is by powering over after the apex.

I guarantee you Timing & Scoring definitely didn't count the best of their 5 timed runs. It was more like 4 runs + 1 re-run, thus only 4 counted.

As for power-sliding, drifting, what you really want to achieve is maximum slip angle (i.e. lateral grip at maximum acceleration). As soon as you lose grip, slip angle increases and you either spin, or power slide, both are fun to do, and watch but not healthy for your lap times. In the end when it's competition runs I avoid any power-sliding to get my best times.

Shinobi
03-26-2008, 03:33 AM
98.333 I believe was my best. Spun out on the 3rd run, and just messed up the 4th one. I don't know why I didn't check my tire pressures after the 2nd run, but I should've. A 97 was there for me. If I was an A-level driver (I'm definitely B-level), a high-95 or low-96 could've been had IMO.

Long and fun course, but I still prefer to see more autox type elements such as slaloms, gates and chicago boxes. Regardless, San Diego BMWCCA events rock :buttrock.

Glad you guys liked the course. That thing was LONG. We had a lot of help setting it up, but I still ended up walking 2 or 3 full laps in the morning while we got everything laid out.

Funny thing; I found a crumpled $10 bill in a crack in the asphalt while we were getting the cones spaced out at 630AM. Thank you, random careless Chargers fan (or SCCA participant?)...
Where were you? I didn't see you all day. I'm sure you saw the bane of all black cars' existence running all day, hehe.

Long and fun course, but I still prefer to see more autox type elements such as slaloms, gates and chicago boxes. Regardless, San Diego BMWCCA events rock :buttrock.

I agree. Give us low horsepower guys a chance :(

I had to finish getting the new transmission into my wagon, then replace its motor mounts and oil pan gasket and etc etc etc...so I was there from 6AM-9AM to set up and get things rolling, then I went home to get the wagon finished.

Seriously guys, if you want "true" auto-x elements (I do too), then e-mail the head of autocross (Dan Tackett). That's the only way your voices will be heard.

Yea, I believe we met before at Pizza Port...didn't you bring the 350Z from Hertz a few months ago lol. BTW, your car looked really taut...what is your suspension setup?

Ahh gotcha. OK, you're off the hook for this one, Ben. :)

I think what you mean is power sliding.

Drifting would be if you initiate the slide before the apex.

Power sliding, from what it seemed like you were doing, is by powering over after the apex.

Precisely yep. I just stomped it and started going sideways past the apex.

I guess I'd have to flick it or clutch kick to be sliding before that ?

It was fun nontheless :)

Thanks. I'm well aware of all that :)

Weren't you the fastest BMW of the day ?
And your car is auto ? Is it superchaged ? What have you done to it ?

Regardless, amazing time ! :buttrock

Clutch kicking will do the job :)

Hopefully at the next auto (probably the one after bfest), I will be able to finally drive a BMW out to an event.

Yes, yes, and yes :). What have I done to her? Everything but a transmission swap :D. The supercharger doesn't help that much actually (but it doesn't hurt either). Its really more about the tires, the suspension and modding the nut behind the wheel.

Thanks. There's always room for improvement in my driving though. I KNOW I'm leaving a good 2 seconds out there because my skillz aren't where I want them to be. But I barely get any seat time these days, attending only a handful when I used to do 30+ events a year.

Yeah I guess whatever your level you can always get better. In my case, it's fun to be a noob. I learn so much each time !

Anyway, really impressive time, you should come back next time;)

Then I work on the track and count people doing 5+ timed runs and was like :(

There were several cars out there with 2 or more drivers. SQ's car had FOUR drivers, so you probably saw a bit of that one. :stickoutt

FYI - The results were finally posted:

http://www.sdbmwcca.com/Auto-xResults/Mar-22-2008.html

I thought the next event's attendance would suffer due to Bimmerfest, but it looks like there's ~90 registrants already. Cool. See y'all there.
