i have been wanting to do a couple of runs with a friend of mine he has a really nice 328is silver. he agreed and we did a couple of runs.
run was from 10mph till 120mph , both cars where even throughout 1st and 2nd gears then at 3rd gear he started to pull me up top he able to pull 2 cars by 80mph and 4 cars by 120mph. i was rather pleased because his car is fast.
97 328is "auto" : euro m3 evo headers , custom exhaust, decat, custom tune , 3.73lsd, custom cai.
98 323is "auto" : 328 full exhaust with remus rally label muffler, custom cai, custom tune, decat, some weight reduction , 3.64lsd.

i was actually pretty happy with the outcome. however i did try with a stock 328is they pull me by a car or two at most and thats at high speeds.
i tried also with an e46 328i and am able to pull them throughout the gears.
of course automatics.
i have tried with an e36 328is 5speed with some mods and his was able to pull me easily.

wow, as others have said the oucome surprises me. He has the shorter gearing, bigger engine, and similar mods. I figure it would've pulled you from the get go.
Good job on hanging as long as you did.

am a little surprised too i was expecting him to smoke me pretty badly and his car is a faster than most 328 you see. i have been wanting to add cams and headers however i was told on an automatic i would see minimal gains what do u think?

from what I've seen, on most BMWs, headers won't do much. it is more of a vanity mod, unless it is the last "breathing" mod you hvae left to do.
Cams, i believe if you get the m3s cams (not sure about euro versions though) that is an upgrade for an e36. About the same difference that getting aftermarket cams for the m3 will do. You'd need to look into if it is the same for euro version as it is US.
Is that 3.64lsd your stock diff? Getting shorter gearing would help you out being an auto, or look into an auto > manny swap. That would help you alot, but I know not everyone wants to tackle things like those.

Way to hang! Get an OBD1 intake manifold on that thing and you will hang MUCH better in the top end.
